The Historic Taos, Inn

Second time back in a year! LOVE LOVE LOVE the homey feel, the ‘living room’ vibe and the live music every night! We left once, we are leaving twice, maybe next time we will be back for good! This is an extraordinary town full of culture, incredible stories, amazing folk, good eats, great tequila, and lots of VIEWS! The Taos Inn creates a lovely vibe with amazing music and food!

A tasty restaurant and a fun lounge Doc Holliday’s old house! Who could pass this up? We went to Taos for Thanksgiving and I booked a table at The Historic Taos Inn restaurant and we were not disappointed. Great service, strong wine list, I had the traditional turkey dinner which was well portioned and delicious. The hubs had a steak which he raved about for the next 24 hours. The hubs also ordered a Sazerac and he loved it. As the reigning Sazerac champion, I can agree that the drink was very well made. Go and check this place out!

Did not stay here but we had appetizers and listened to music. I like the chips and guacamole. The salsa was okay but not my favorite. The caesar dressing was really great and presentation was nice.

We stayed in room 115. For $ 209 I expected more than:
— Pillows made from chopped foam (think pillowcase full of socks)
— Moist carpet. Not just in one spot but throughout the room as though the pad underneath were harboring water
— Broken venetian blinds so it was not possible to block out the light from street lamps
— Nonfunctioning wifi. The woman at the front desk said (and I’m not kidding): «Bring your laptop to the lobby, connect there, then drag it to your room». Dragging a wifi signal. Precious.
— The toilet was so close to the wall that leaning over to (you know) was nearly impossible.
— There was a band playing in the lobby that was so loud that it was actually loud in the room. They stopped playing promptly at 10pm as if that was the agreed upon hour when hotel guests would return to their rooms for some R&R.
I like funky, old, historic, whatever you want to call them, hotels. But all that funkiness should not come at the expense of having a reasonable shot at a good night’s rest. Sadly, that was not the case for us. I would not recommend this hotel and I will not be returning.

We arrived on a Saturday and were escorted to our rooms. Very nice touch. The first room they showed us was way too close to the bar and they had no problem relocating us. We had to move rooms the second day which was kind of a hassle. The hotel is very clean and the people are nice. We will return if we come back to Taos

Stayed here in late October. Small but sweet room. Quiet, clean. Good food in the restaurant for lunch and dinner. Not much for breakfast. Great customer service, lovely to read in the lobby.

I stay hear each time I come to visit Taos. The rooms are great and each have a little fireplace in the room which is fun to start a fire and relax. Wish there was a hot tub to soak in but I guess I’ll get over it. Doc Martin’s is a good spot to eat while you’re staying here and the bar has a few TV’s to watch the game for us sports fans. Satisfied customer that will continue to return!

We really enjoyed the Taos Inn — staff is very friendly, had a fire in the fireplace last night, rooms VERY clean… we’ll be back!

This place has great live music every night! Loved spending the end of the evening here enjoying free live music.

Doc Martin’s is the restaurant in the Historic Taos Inn, and is a good place to eat. The food and service were both very good. When my wife’s vegan order came with cheese on the top, the waiter immediately took it away and had the kitchen recook her order. My meal was good but I had to request salsa and add a bit of salt to give it the flavor that I wanted. Once that was done I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would return and would recommend eating there. I don’t know anything about the hotel itself, but it looked very quaint.

This place definitely has charm. The two story front room doubles as check-​in and entertainment at night, so it can be a little hard to hear when you’re checking in. This room is lovely, with a lot of historic character.
The grounds were very well-​groomed. Lovely landscaping, and the sidewalks are bloomed every morning to remove any leaves from the plants and trees.
Because it was such a charming check-​in and walk to the room, I was a little disappointed in the room. Plainly stated, it’s dated, but I can understand that a renovation to bring it up to date would be extensive and expensive. There was no coffee maker in the room. That, for me, subtracted some significant points. Something so inexpensive, would be an easy addition to offset the average mattress, which seemed ready for replacement. The sufficient ironing board and new iron added a few points back. Again, something fairly inexpensive, that allowed me to look crisp when I left.
Overall, I’d stay here again, because I really enjoyed the ambience. I’m giving three stars instead of four, because I couldn’t get past the lack of coffee maker in the room, which wouldn’t be expensive. I like to have a cup or two before I shower and go down for breakfast. I don’t like dining like a zombie. If having a coffee maker isn’t a deal breaker for you, consider this rating a solid four.

Perfect location in Taos. The Historic Taos Inn consists of several adobe houses and the main building. In the back of the hotel is a free parking. We got room in main building. Very tiny, small old room with some kind of charm. Access to our room was from the balcony over the lobby, s o we can enjoy Live music in the foyer in the evening. Hotel has bar and restaurant. Staff helpful & friendly.

We always take a day trip to Taos when visiting friends in Santa Fe. When there we always eat at Doc Martins at the Taos Inn. Great atmosphere, either inside or on the back patio, and excellent food,
some of it New Mexican style. My elk burger was special, and big. craft beer made it taste better as did the visits from our cheerful server Winona. I hope we can get back there soon.

First the bar — 3 stars. It takes 10 minutes for the waitstaff to acknowledge you exist, another 10 to actually get your drink, and then the drinks are disappointing! This was quite possibly the worst margarita I have ever had. On the bright side, the music was actually quite good and the bar had a nice, lively atmosphere.
Next the hotel –2 stars. Great location, clean enough rooms, and reasonably comfortable beds. Unfortunately, this was also overpriced and the loudest hotel I have ever stayed at. The band plays until 10 and is clearly audible from all rooms in the main building so forget an early night. Then in the morning the floor creaks so loudly and the walls are so thin that nearby guests woke me quite early. If you do stay here, avoid the main building! The hotel also tried to bill me for someone else’s bar tab, so check your bill carefully.

We used to frequent this place rather regularly as our friend used to own it. The parties and music here are AMAZING! What I don’t like anymore is that they took a really amazing happy hour price on Nachos and other snacks and took them to the Bel Air roof! They chased all the locals away and we all have relocated to parties at other places. Musical acts here are still great, and they do a good cowboy Margarita. While there, once you see the Nachos are like $ 18 (with chicken or beef) or $ 12 (without), tell the owner you want to revert to the $ 4 Nachos prices! Oh, another thing that bugged us is there is a receptionist/​host there who is always texting. Not really paying attention to the guests.

The rooms are great. Very … adobe. Cool and quiet on a hot day. Beautiful semi-​private entrance courtyard with aspen trees and fountain.
The bar is fun and has excellent (though a little small) margaritas. Live music was entertaining background. The hotel is walking distance to the touristy part of town. Desk staff had very good info and was helpful in plotting our course to Jemez.
I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Taos.

For our Xmas Holiday, we decided to check out the legendary Historic Taos Inn to see what all the fuss is about!
The drive to Taos is a beautiful drive surrounded by majestic mountains, the «Ring of Enchantment.“Just absolutely stunning views.
Since 1936, situated in the middle of a small mountain town, The Historic Taos Inn, aka «the living room of Taos,» is it’s lobby bar, Doc Martins, the locals hangout.
It has long been frequented by celebrities like Greta Garbo, D. H. Lawrence, and Pawnee Bill, more recently by Jessica Lange & Robert Redford among others.
It’s an adobo style hotel with charming western flair that’s within walking distance to the legendary Taos square.
We couldn’t have been happier with the location or our southwestern style chic room. It was very large, with a king size bed, a kiev fireplace, shutters on all the windows you could close for privacy & the bathroom was truly unique, with a two person shower & a bathroom heater which came in handy during our snowy xmas stay.
We were there a week & it was quite a eventful memorable stay!
The morning we slept in, the front desk called & wanted to know if we wanted maid service. We asked for them to come & to bring us a ash bucket so we could clean the fireplace.
I still had my PJ’s on when there was a knock on the door. They explained that they all leave around noon for the day so if you want maid service they had to do it right then.
It was a whole possy of them, they quickly took over the room & one guy went over to the fireplace and started shoveling hot ash not realizing that we had a fire earlier that morning, till it was too late.
Within a couple mins there was smoke all over the room, everyone was choking, the fire alarm went off, they opened all the doors & windows to air out our room while I was standing there in my cowboy & Indian pajamas, as a crowd of hotel guests outside loomed.
The local pueblo maids were not happy with their local brethren that smoked us all out, they were snarling at him, saying something funny in their native language while he apologized profusely to them as well as to us, poor guy. We thought it was hilarious. We just stood there laughing at the «live» entertainment.
There is also «live» entertainment in the lobby most nights & that night we decided to hang out at the lobby bar, Doc Martins & par-​take in the local festive mix as well as the legendary margarita mix :)‘
The local free entertainment was hippy cool, the atmosphere was apri ski chic, the hand made margaritas were superbly stellar «legendary» like everyone says ;)
The food was unexpectedly gourmet, the rattlesnake sausage & the lentil salad was killer!
We had the most entertaining memorable Christmas Eve night mingling with the local artist & international skiers as well as other American tourists.
I had the most intellectual conversation with one very talented local artist, he was a unique breath of fresh air. We quickly made acquaintances & I now have a fine piece of his work.
There were lots of hugs at the end of the night, as we all closed the place down together.
Around midnight stumbling back to our room realizing it was Xmas,
we decided to open our gifts along with some champagne, cheese, crackers, pâté, etc.,
It was lightly snowing & so romantic by the kiev fireplace. Hubby was dancing round channeling Don Quixote till sugar plums danced round in our heads & we fell fast asleep in our super comfy bed :))
Around 4am we woke to scratching noises on the back window. There was something BIG trying to come in!!! Hubby was like go back to sleep, its just Rudolf & Santa.
Then it climbed up on the roof of our room and was walking around on the roof, it kept scratching trying to get in, then it growled!!!
We. freaked. out!!! Then hubby says «Thats def not Santa!» Yikes!!!
We looked over at the coffee table full of leftover pâté, stinky cheese’s etc., & jumped up like the scene out of Home Alone running around the room in circles!!!
We thought we were surely going to get eaten!!!
Hubby grabbed the fire poker, I grabbed some scissors & hubby goes «what are you gona do with those, cut his hair??»
Right! Not a good plan. So I got the garbage bag, tossed all the food in it, tied it up & what seemed like an eternity, but was actually a few mins, became quiet again.
As we peeked out the window, the bear slowly disappeared into the falling snow, vanished into the dark winters night.
The most exhilarating Christmas we have ever had & won’t soon forget!
We left the next day, on our way out, the staff thanked us, told us they enjoyed having us :)

I absolutely loved our stay at the Taos Inn. The feel of this place is so lovely. Is it an exquisite five-​star hotel? No. But this is totally my kind of place.
–Live Music EVERY NIGHT! (it ends at 9:30, so it was never an issue of being loud when we were trying to sleep) and as a guest, you have your own little private viewing area upstairs-​at least that’s how i felt!
–Super friendly staff
–Great bar and restaurant right downstairs-​not your typical hotel bar and restaurant either.
–Walking distance to the square and all the cute stuff in Taos.
If ever I’m back in Taos, this is without a doubt, where I’ll stay.

I didn’t stay here but enjoyed the restaurant/​bar area with live music. The folk musician Brent was fabulous. loved his voice, instruments and personality. Also tried the rabbit and rattlesnake sausage… yum! tasted like chicken. The cocktail– sex on the mesa was tasty too, not to strong for me.

100 years old.
I’ve stayed in 100 year old places before. Its hard to recapture a history of a place, keep it old, and make it nice to stay in.
Taos Inn did it. 5 strong stars. Old, but has style. Worth swinging wide for.
