History
Established in 1936.
The Taos Inn is made up of several houses, dating from the 1800s, which surrounded a small plaza. Dr. Thomas Martin came here in the 1890s, buying the largest of the houses– now Doc Martin’s Restaurant. His wife, Helen Martin was a gifted batik artist and the Taos Society of Artists was founded in her dining room in 1912. The Martins later purchased the additional buildings that surrounded the plaza, renting them to artists and writers.
When the only hotel in town burned down the same year that Doc died, Helen bought the Tarleton house, now the Adobe Bar and had the entire plaza enclosed. The Hotel Martin opened up in 1936.
The Hotel Martin was the hub of Taos’ social, intellectual and artistic activity. Subsequent owners renamed it the Taos Inn, added the popular neon thunderbird sign and the carved reception desk. In 1982, the Inn was placed on the National and New Mexico Registers of Historic Places.
We continue to support the arts with curated art shows and live music nightly.
