Service is always wonderful and the food is delicious. The sushi rice is seasoned well and the quality of the fish is superb. I’ve eaten probably 2⁄3 of the many menu items. Aside from the sashimi and nigiri, some of my favorites are the Batu Kaku(braised pork belly), the whole grilled squid, grilled yellowfin cheek, and the Earl Grey Flan. Their unagi(bbq fresh water eel) is tender and juicy, not dried out little slivers like a lot of places serve, and is the best I’ve had out of the dozens of sushi places I’ve tried around the country. I’m not much of a roll person, but the ones I’ve had here have been delicious(the one exception being the spicy hamachi roll, which was just a regular hamachi roll with spicy aioli drizzled on top). The people who are complaining about the size of them obviously don’t know that sushi rolls are supposed to be that size, not the massive logs that Americans and sushi novices seem to like. If you know and love traditional sushi, Maki will definitely leave you coming back for more. Yes, service isn’t the fastest, but those who come for quality sushi and sashimi(eg not California rolls) will find the wait well worth it.

Great food but don’t even bother unless you have a couple of hours to spare. One sushi chef, the slowest I’ve ever seen, and enough customers to keep him working for sure. Be prepared to wait 1+ hours for your food. If you are ok with that, enjoy!

We wanted a place nearby we could count on as our go-to restaurant when we didn’t feel like driving too far for dinner. This is the place that fills that need. We had various rolls of sushi. All were excellent. Not too much rice and the fish and other seafood was very fresh and flavorful. The kimchi and pork was a real surprise; outstanding and highly recommended. As we enjoyed dinner we watched other patrons being served great looking dinners in large bowls. Looks like we will have to try them next time.

I grew up with Japanese food so I have a natural affinity towards it. that being said, however, you need to understand there are differences in how you prepare dishes, even those that are thought of as traditional. of course these differences can be personal as well as regional. given these factors, I can tell you that Maki has always made dishes that I like. their gyoza for instance is different from what I grew up with and from what my wife makes. but even so, it is delicious. the Donburi and sushi are well prepared and some of my favorites.

Our experience was just mediocre. The service was sweet but painfully slow. The sushi was all right but none of the four rolls we ordered were something we would return to reorder. The staff was polite but not helpful for answering too many questions. Not poor, not good, just overall a fair experience.

This was our first time here and probably our last one. The food is great, fresh and tasty, but to get to taste it we had to wait … then wait… We ordered a sushi/sashimi special plate for two, and THE chef started the preparation exactly 45 minutes after we ordered. Took him less than 10 minutes to prepare it, but the wait… This is so sad because the place is great and clean, the waitress very responsive and kind, parking is easy. But they need someone to help the chef make the simple parts. When we got the plate and realized there would not be enough for us we then ordered six salmon nigiris without wasabi, to be told it would take 20 more minutes. We finally got them after 10 minutes once the waitress negotiated with THE chef. Dear owners please try to convince your chef that the simple dishes could be done by someone else. There were employees waiting doing nothing while we were asking for simple nigiris. But if you have all the time you want and can afford the quality, please go there.

This is an authentic Japanese restaurant. Everything is fresh and delicious. We came in for lunch many times and dinner a few times as well. For lunch I recommend their Special Bento. They are reasonably priced and came with variety of items on the Bento box. For dinner I normally ordered from their specials on the white board.

Maki is amazing! Order the chef’s special roll and you can’t go wrong! Friendly service, great atmosphere! Best sushi in town. If you can, sit at the sushi bar and watch the chef make your sushi and get it 1 roll at a time. So fresh… so good!

It is incredible to find a gem such as Maki in the Portland suburbs. There were a variety of playful flourishes in the dishes that added interest and intrigue. For example, the sushi rice in the chirashi bowl had fine slivers of fresh ginger that amplified each bite. The hand made wraps for the gyoza were pillowy soft. The dipping sauce for the gyoza was graced with a touch of heat without being overwhelming. The accents that accompanied the pork belly were sublime. The menu is large enough to warrant many more explorations, and the saké menu offered variety with good value. To top it all off, the staff were cheerful, informative, pleasant, and attentive. I will enjoy returning there again soon to sample more delights.

Best Japanese food I’ve had in Oregon. Specials tonight included deep fried eggplant(traditional, not breaded), in a superb sauce. That dish alone made the meal, and the sushi was fantastic as well. We live on the coast, so we’ll be making a point of driving through Tigard when we want Japanese food. Highly recommend!

Maki is our go-to sushi house in the Tigard area. Many Friday nights have been spent at Maki over a sampling of nigiri and sashimi, udon noodle bowls, and a variety of sushi rolls. The sushi is always fresh, the service is always friendly and attentive, and we always leave feeling satisfied. Although not our favorite sushi house in Portland, Maki provides a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere with consistently good sushi at very affordable prices.

Sushi is my favorite type of food do you really have to be amazing to get 5 stars out of me. This place totally deserves it. Very authentic, tantalizing cuts of fresh fish, everything served fast and pretty. I really liked the small atmosphere and the service was great.

My husband and I went to this restaurant on a Sunday night. It was our first time. There were just two groups dining in and who came before us. Another two groups came in after us. After we ordered(3 rolls), we were told that we would have to wait 40mins since their priorities were people dining in and they only had one chef, who, by the way, at the moment when the waiter was telling this to us, was doing nothing and was just talking to somebody. Needless to say, we didn’t wait and left. And I don’t think we will come back due to poor service. We just went to Sawatdee in sherwood, which is our favorite restaurant around the area, that always has good service. Very quick, even though there are a lot of people.

Way Too SALTY! Slow. Not Fresh. Too Salty. Small servings for the price. And did I mention too salty? Not sure how this place got a 4 star average, but maybe I just hit them on a bad night.

This is my year for updating old reviews. I wrote my original review a number of years ago — before they changed their menu and added the izakaya plates. After dining there again last night and sampling many of the izakaya small plates and the specialty sushi(individual pieces — spendy but totally worth every cent) — my mind was altered in the best way. We started with miso — earthy yet invigorating, then asparagus tempura — light, light handed on the batter so the perfectly cooked stalks were elevated and not obliterated, then onto some avocado sushi roll(avocado perfectly ripe) and then pork cutlets — crunchy and addictive, then a specialty sushi(by the piece) barely seared salmon and onions(I could live on those if my pocketbook would allow) — it was the best piece of salmon sushi EVEREVEREVER — followed by salmon onigiri and finally shrimp tempura udon. Ahhhhh! I was in gastronomic outerspace! My relaxation was enhanced by a couple of glasses of Oregon made sake(crisp and light) and ended with perfectly brewed green tea. Our server, a lovely Japanese woman made me feel like a palace princess and added just the right touch for a five star evening that ran under $ 45 sans tip for the 2 of us(fyi –we shared everything). What a way to end a long, stress filled week.

The izakaya will blow your mind. The salmon kama, butter fish shioyaki, and earl grey flan are so delicious. Sushi is solid, but the izakaya experience is more fun with friends. Sushi… you can get anywhere. There are few places that have izakaya and good variety. Hole in the wall that most people don’t know about, unless you live in Tigard, or you have a friend who does. Parking sucks… who says you don’t have to work for good food?

For my first sushi bar visit as a new Portland resident, I made my way to Maki which is conveniently located near my office in the quaint Mainstreet Tigard area. The staff was very friendly and incredibly attentive. The sushi was very fresh and carefully crafted, as was clearly apparent by both the taste and presentation. A little more expensive that my usual sushi stop, but I certainly had my money’s worth.
