Holey Toledough

Some of these bad reviews seem like they are complaining about Black Kite and not Holey Toledough donuts. Black Kite is a coffee house that sells the donuts and if these reviewer have an issue with black kite they should be addressing them in the review of the Black Kite shop.
These are the best donuts I’ve ever had. I’ve never been to Black Kite but have bought them at the Farmer’s Market, downtown when they’ve had a table during the food truck days and am very happy to see them at Bleak House.
My only complaints are: 1. the price. $ 3 for a donut is steep so I buy one for myself as a treat when I am at a place that has them. Certainly not the kind of money I would spend if I want to treat my office to donuts on a Friday morning, but these are great donuts and you get what you pay for. The other complaint is they are hard to find. A lot of times they are sold out of individual donuts at the Farmers Market on Saturday and they are only at Bleak House certain days and they sell out of them fast.
I like the unique flavors. They switch up the flavors every week. I’m hoping they will open up a bakery/​coffee shop downtown once promedica moves in.

I’m calling it as I see it. Average.
I tried one of these today for the first time. It looked delicious, smelled great and was $ 3 for a single doughnut.
More than I’d ever paid for a single doughnut before, but I’d heard great things so I wanted to try it.
The first three bites were very doughy, with not a lot of other flavor. I was disappointed.
The second half was much better after I got to the portion where it was frosted and had the toppings. That portion was among the best doughnuts I’ve ever had.
Factoring in the price, and that at least half the doughnut was nothing more than average, I’m calling this a high three stars. If I were to ever try it again, I might upgrade to 4 if I like a different flavor more or something.
Not saying I won’t go again, in fact I probably will. It’s just not a priority.

I love to support to local businesses and I wish that I could write a glowing review about this one. Unfortunately, I can’t. See, I pride myself paying for exceptional food and $ 3 per doughnut didn’t strike me as far out there because I’ve paid that much before without blinking an eye. However, the doughnut that I paid $ 3 for, was exceptional and huge. The doughnuts at Holey Toledough were small and average. I had the Egg Nog and the Orange Cranberry fritter. Neither choice tickled my fancy, but I so wanted them to. The Egg Nog tasted like your average doughnut with an Egg Nog cream in the hole and fritter was just okay. I had such high hopes for this to be a local gourmet doughnut place that I would frequent, but sadly this gets a «no» from me.

I thought I would give it a try given the lack of unique donut options in the area and since the coffee was supposed to be good at the Black Kite Coffee. Reviews seemed to range from low to high, and I have to agree with the lows. The coffee and the donuts were okay and perhaps I expect a lot coming in comparison to donut meccas like NYC. Price was fine given what I’ve paid out east but passing regular donuts off as gourmet was sad. They were basic donuts with just toppings on them. I ended up with the maple-​bacon donut, and it had absolutely no maple taste whatsoever. It was basically sugary-​glazed with bacon crumbles on top. The donut itself (minus toppings) was generic and could have come from a grocery store. I was hoping that the dough itself would be unique but no such luck.

I want to give more stars, but I just can’t. I’m a huge fan of local food and I’m willing to pay a premium for high-​quality, local cuisine. However, I really want some value-​added for the extra $.
With that being said, I simply can’t justify paying $ 3 per donut for an average tasting donut. $ 3 per donut is obscene! For that price, I would expect the best donuts I’ve ever tasted. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. The donuts are not bad, but not worth the price in my opinion.
You can get a dozen, freshly-​made donuts from Café Donuts for $ 8. And those donuts are amazing.

These donuts are fantastic. The owners are always pushing the envelope with new flavors and concepts. Never does a week go by when I don’t see a donut that makes me want to rush out and buy one (or a dozen). Not every flavor is my favorite nor are they the cheapest, but I appreciate the ingenuity, the craft, and the solid work that goes in to making each donut delicious and pretty.
I buy mine most often at the Toledo Farmer’s Market on Saturday and at the food truck lineup on Thursdays. They are also sold at Black Kite (Old West End) and Flying Joe (Perrysburg) on Thursdays-​Sundays.

Not worth the money. Most are plain donuts with fancy toppings. If you get distracted by fancy toppings and don’t care about the donut itself, eat here. Had the maple bacon and cookies and cream, both were bordering on the stale side. I could have gotten a fresher donut at Krogers. The cookies and cream didn’t even have cream, just icing. Add in the exorbitant price and this place isn’t close to worth it but when you’re the only game in town I guess it works. Coming from the east coast where NYC and philly donuts are fantastic (and something like a gourmet federal donut is «only» $ 2), these donuts are not worth going out of your way for.

During Old West End festival weekend, we popped into Black Kite coffee on Collingwood, and picked up a box of Holey Toledough donuts. I got «one of each» and headed home to share with friends for a great weekend brunch treat.
We nibbled on all of the different varieties and I have to say some of the flavors are VERY subtle. There was a sriracha option, and while yes… I did faintly taste sriracha, I wanted a bit of heat but it just wasn’t there. The maple bacon on the other hand, with actual slices of bacon on top was a slam dunk.
In a perfect world, Holey Toledough will open a store front uptown, and I can have a delicious donut every time I visit the city. Seek these out my friends.

WOW! I can’t say enough good things! My partner and I have been following Holey Toledough on their facebook page just waiting for a chance to go fork over a few dollars to try their sweet dough and cream filled creations! Today we had that chance… Holey Toledough was at a small trade show in Point Place… We were the first inline and first cash paying customers… that’s how excited we were… We ended up buying two (2) of every flavor which were Vanilla bean
S’mores, Fluffer nutter, Berries n cream, Maple bacon and Raspberry ganache… I have only tried a few of the flavors but each one I try I fall in love all over with this NEW TOLEDO CREATION!!! The only reason I haven’t given them a full 5 star review yet is because I am waiting to try all the flavors! My partner was a bit disappointed this morning not being able to buy one of their apple fritter’s but I think we will be back tomorrow to buy and try one of those! If you are looking for a good quality donut that Toledo has not seen for a long time look no further research where Holey Toledough donuts are sold currently and go pick up a few or a dozen, it will be worth your drive and it will definitely satisfy your craving for a good donut!
