This is one of my favorite places to throw hammer. Kind of nostalgic, actually. .. Days of University of Arizona throwing camps as a young teen, and coming down here to compete unattached. The hammer area is tucked to the right of the track in a separate area, closest to the high jump pit. Completely separate area, which is so nice not to have it infield where the danger of being hit is greater. Clean facilities. I’d recommend bringing an umbrella because the shade and seating is limited. The parking situation is pretty rough. Unless you arrive super early, you’ll more than likely park in a neighborhood nearby and have to walk to the track. .. So hopefully you’re a pro at parallel parking! It is absolutely worth the drive down to Tucson and I’ll skip ASU’s Baldy Castillo Invite any day if Willie Williams is the same weekend. Just like I did a few days ago!

I’m here quite a bit because I spend the better part of my spring and summer working with track athletes. The stadium and track are very well maintained and the facilities are very clean. The stadium seating faces east so a hat or umbrella for morning and afternoon events might be necessary. By Evening you will be shaded by the stands. Parking is limited so be sure to get to your event early. More often than not you are going to have to part in the neighborhoods nearby and walk to the stadium. My favorite summer time events here are the Tucson Parks and Rec Track meets on Tuesdays. These meets are for all ages and all skill levels. I love the 5 and under races — the little ones running around are SO cute!
