Basim Z Abdelkarim, MD

I was recently referred to Dr. Abdelkarim and I couldn’t be happier! His staff was very friendly from the moment I walked in, his office is clean, and organized. Yes, I waited a couple of minutes before being seen but I’m not complaining because when it was my turn Dr. Abdelkarim was SO patient with me, answered all of my questions, and made me feel very comfortable. I will refer him and I look forward to my next visit. He’s an amazing doctor!

I have had severe and chronic stomach issues for over 12 years. Seen several gastroenterologist and all previous doctors kept telling me everything was ok which didn’t make any sense because if I was ok I wouldn’t be in pain everyday! Came in waited about 30 minutes to see the PA Dr. Donahue. He listened to all my medical history, made reasonable recommendations, and gave me options on how to proceed with my health care. I am extremely happy with this service and I know these issues will get resolved with the care of this doctor! He was extremely thorough and detailed in explaining all proceedures to me. I felt very comfortable discussing such embarassing issue but he remained completely professional. Excellent DR. that I would recommend to all!

This is my first time visiting Dr. A. I had a very positive experience. The staff were friendly and kind. Not rude at all. I thought Dr. A was great! I didn’t feel rushed. He asked me if I had any more questions. He has a wonderful bedside manner. I loved that he is a family man which made me feel comfortable. I loved his personality. He was very accommodating.

Dr. «A» may be an accomplished physician but lacks basic humanism skills. He is so very busy that the wait time in the outer office is usually 45 minutes to 2 hours with another 15 – 30 minutes after you get in the exam room. He is terse, his listening skills are impeded by what he thinks you are going to say (example; he asked symptoms and I started to tell him, he interrupted and told me what they «were»), doesn’t ask basic questions (ie; onset, recurrence, etc.). He spends as little time as possible with you unless you are a fisherman or other «buddy» that he happens to like to talk with. I saw him years ago and decided not to see him again, but with a major problem recently I thought I would give him a try once again. I now know that nothing has changed, if anything, it’s worsened. I work as a «standardized patient» helping medical students become betters docs with a humanistic approach. This is an example of exactly what they shouldn’t become.

I’ve seen Dr. Dalia Ibrahim at this office for some gastrointestinal and digestive problems. I had a good experience overall. Generally, the wait time seemed to be about 30 – 40 minutes, but i guess that’s typical at any doctor’s office. It’s a nice waiting room, anyway. I think it had a guest wifi network. Dr. Ibrahim has a good bedside manner. She did an endoscopy for me. What was great about it, was that it was on a Saturday so i didn’t have to use up a vacation day from my job. She explained the results with me afterwards. Overall, i think she gave me good treatment. The staff is pretty helpful too. The parking lot can get congested by the late morning to afternoon so don’t be surprised if you have to park across the street or a block or two away. Its not really a problem, and the neighborhood is nice.

Just as a heads up apparently NOBODY in the office speaks Spanish so don’t even waste your time if you have a Spanish-​speaking family member that needs to be seen.

Very nice office and reception took personal information for my first appt. very effeciently. Dr. seems to have a good bedside manner and works well with his patients. Very happy initial appt. Second appointment for actual procedure made after this one.

Dr. Abdelkarim is a knowledgeable and kind doctor. He is able to bring both specialized knowledge and caring when treating his patients. Even though his waiting room is almost always standing room only, when he sees you, he is still able to give you his undivided attention and make you feel like your health really matters to him. His staff are also very friendly and professional. I’m blessed to call myself one of his patients. He is one of the only positive aspects of dealing with IBD!

I highly recommend Dr. Abdelkarim. Finally a doctor who goes above and beyond for his patients. I had a bad experience with my gastroenterologist in Riverside and asked for a 2^nd opinion and was referred to him. I have been to his office 3 times and had a colonoscopy in the last 6 months.
The positives; he is caring and attentive. I have a chronic medical condition and have been to the emergency room 5 times in the last year. He gave me hope that I could manage my symptoms with the right medicine. He even gave me his cell phone number to call him if I went to the emergency room. How many doctors do that!!! And when I did go to the emergency room he called so that I wouldn’t have to wait forever to be seen. When he did my colonoscopy I slept throughout the entire procedure. My previous doctor didn’t wait for me to be sedated and it was a horrible experience. His office staff is awesome. He is knowledgeable, and he has a great sense of humor. He is a very clean office. His office is open late.
The negatives; he is soooooooo busy. But i think its because he is the most popular GI doctor in the area. He was about 20 minutes late on two of my visits, and a half hour late for my colonoscopy. He was rushed on one of my visits and I told him. He was apologetic, and said that he was hiring another doctor to help him out.
The bottom line is that he is a great doctor. Expect him to be behind schedule but he’s worth it.

We have severe issues with stomach and throat. We have been prior to him to 2 general doctors, and 1 ENT doc.
Since the beginning of our relationship with Dr Abdelkarim’s office, we had lots of issues :
— For the first appointment we waited 3 weeks to get in and then we spoke to him for 2 minutes. That was it. He asked what previous prescriptions we had, and reissued one, and gave another appointment in a month.
— Two weeks later after the medicine did not work (we knew that at our first appointment, that’s why we were coming to him in the first place) and condition got worse, with lots of begging we were given a appointment for an endoscopy.
— On the endoscopy day, he was late over half an hour while on the table and everyone was looking for him. At the end of the endoscopy, he said there’s nothing wrong, no biopsy needed, we should see a ENT doc. We interrupted him and told him we had already and he had his records, OH, he never read the file. He quickly changed his story, asked us to make another appointment with his office and stormed out of the room.
— Two weeks later, with the pain ongoing and worsening (after and ongoing severe daily diarrhea, stomach pain, one emergency clinic visit and a Family doctor visit), we went back to the office and met with his assistant, he chose not to see us anymore. His assistant actually gave us a long and detailed meeting, and ordered necessary tests to look for other causes.
— We did the tests and a month later the office staff told us they do not have them and stop calling them, even though the lab was telling us for weeks they sent the results.
— We chose not to go back to this office after we got our test results (5 weeks later after we completed them), we were also strongly advised by the gen doc to see someone else. The new doc tried different treatments, did weekly checkups and found the problems and came up with a treatment plan.
i believe Doc Abdelkarim’s main customer flow comes from the hospital, so he has a steady flow, and does not care about individual results. His assistant is a great person and he truly cares, he gets all the stars from us.
The cherry on the cake is also that later, when we received the billing, we found out that he is charging us for and Endoscopy + Biopsy !!! Even though the biopsy was never performed. This only shows that this business is here purely for profit and has little to no care for patient well being.

Dr. Basin Abdelkarim, MD is the best gastroenterologist I’ve ever seen. He is kind, caring, and the ultimate professional. He’s cared for me when I was hospitalized for eight days in San Antonio Community Hospital for pneumonia, pancreatitis, and highly elevated liver enzymes. I mostly likely owe my life to him! While my Mother was on her death bed in my home, Dr. Abdelkarim showed up on his week off to care for my bleeding ulcers again at San Antonio Hospital. I was an emotional and physical mess. It was so reassuring for him to come and help me. Over the years I’ve seen him many times. He’s always terrifically helpful, while taking enough time to address my every concern. I would highly recommend him to absolutely everyone. His understanding wife, Dr. Manal Abdelkarim, is a terrific dentist. I’m blessed to have both of them as my doctors.

Dr. A is a great doctor, he isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions that need to be asked. I have been dealing with this issue for a long time, and I was excited to see Dr. A after a lot of homework to find the right doctor. It was easy to get an appointment, but it takes about a month. The only thing I didn’t like is after waiting a month for my appointment and spending so much time finding him, I was thrown with his physician’s assistant. It would have been nice to have been told I was going to initially see the PA. The question’s the PA asked me didn’t make me feel as if I was going to get the help I needed so I asked to see Dr. A.
Dr. A was very helpful and asked many questions, reviewed my medical records that I brought. I’m glad I asked to see Dr. A because the PA was so far off base from what Dr. A was suggesting. If I didn’t ask for Dr. A I feel I wouldn’t have gotten the answers I needed.
Dr. A is also great because he called the pharmacy back after house on a Friday night to confirm a prescription, if he wouldn’t have confirmed my prescription that day, I wouldn’t have been prepared for my surgery the following Monday.

I am so happy to have found Dr. A!!! Since having my second baby I’ve been having problems that other doctors have not taken seriously saying things like «well you’re young so it will get better» or «you’re less than a year post-​partum so it’s probably related to that». But Dr. A took his time and listed so many things to test for that no one ever even mentioned! I feel confident that we will get to the bottom of my issue and I’ll be able to have a normal life again! Thank you Dr. A!

Dr. Abdelkarim was excellent! Him and his staff were very courteous and helpful. From the beginning of my visit I barely waited and was helped right away.
Dr. Abdelkarim was extremely knowledgeable and down to earth. He diagnosed me correctly and helped me solve all of my issues. I am very thankful I found such a wonderful doctor!

Great and friendly staff! The service is Awesome. Absolutely no wait time! Other offices you make a appointment and they still have you wait. Highly recommended to friends and family.

I’ve been meaning to update this for a while now. I was mostly annoyed with being told that I couldn’t get my lab results over the phone. I’ve since had two excellent visits with Dr. Abdelkarim and he’s helped me get to the bottom of my issue. I would go back and see him in a heartbeat.

Dr. A is the BEST. He truly listens to you, and you get the feeling he genuinely cares about you, not just your insurance money. You will never wait more than 5 minutes past your appt time, and the entire staff is friendly and welcoming. I wish I could find a GP as good as him. Would recommend him to everyone!

I have been going to Dr. Abdelkarim for the last 4 years, him and his staff have always been so helpful, caring and sweet. I started to go to him because I have Crohns disease and it was acting up really bad at the time, my previous doctor had not done anything to try to make me feel better but when I started seeing Dr. Abdelkarim he did everything he could to make me feel better. I am so grateful that I switched doctors and feel so much better all because of Dr. Abdelkarim.

We love Dr. Abdelkarim! He is very friendly and cares about each patient. He truly wants you to feel better and does everything possible to find the cause of your symptoms and to help you get well. His office is very professionally managed and he keeps to your appointment time. We have seen many doctors but so far Dr. Abdelkarim is by far one of the very best. He has a great bedside manner and we truly appreciate his as a physician and a person.
