Surf School — We provide Surf Lessons (all ages, year round) and Youth Summer Surf Camp. You won’t find a better lesson and better learning conditions anywhere! We provide all the gear (foam longboard and full length wetsuits) — all you need to do is show up. Our technique is so effective, pretty much everyone is able to catch their own waves and stand by the end of their first lesson. With locations in Santa Monica, Venice and Manhattan Beach, we have been awarded time and time again the most competitive permits in Santa Monica and LA County. History

Established in 2003.

We hold the first surf school permit ever offered in Santa Monica, and have been permitted at the same place, in the best beginner’s location in all of Santa Monica Bay, since 2003. We have been around longer and are more qualified than any other surf school in the area. We are the preferred provider of surf instruction for all the most prestigious hotels in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Hollywood, and have at this point taught many thousands of thrilled new surfers to catch their first wave. We started out working with a few hotels and slowly but slowly built our reputation as a professional, qualified, safe and effective operator. We are proud to continue offering the best surf lessons in the Los Angeles/​Santa Monica area.

Awesome way to spend a Saturday. Easy pace, no pressure – it honestly feels like you’re just hanging out with your mellow surfer cousin who has an extra board and endless patience. By the end of the session you’ll be up on the board, Blue Crushing it lol. Fun to do alone, or if you have friends down to go with you.

Such a blast learning how to surf with Chris. I took lessons when I first came out to LA two years ago and struggled. I almost gave up and decided that it wasn’t really for me until I took 3 lessons with these guys. Chris was a great teacher — he was relaxed, made it simple and clear, and didn’t let me over-​complicate things. I got up a few times on the first day and even paddled in myself and we just kept practicing. Chris also showed me a little bit about how to find the waves that will be best and how to approach it when I’m out there without him. Lessons were also so long (2 full hours!) which was great to really get comfortable and choose the right waves without feeling rushed. So awesome.

My 5.5 yr old son attended surf camp for 4 weeks. He had an amazing time! The coaches were amazing and really gave him exceptional lessons and allowed him to feel comfortable on the board. He felt proud of his abilities at the end of his time in the camp and definitely wants to continue surfing! My son absolutely loved the experience — from surfing and boogie boarding, hanging out on the beach, to the coaches who made everything fun and exciting for the kids– I would recommend learn to surf la!

The staff that works at Learn to Surf are super helpful and professional. The actual instructors really know how to teach the sport, including lessons on etiquette and water safety. The staff behind the scenes worked above AND beyond to accommodate an unforeseen circumstance with my son which ultimately resulted in a full refund of his days missed. They respond so FAST to emails and phone calls, and are beyond courteous. We will definitely be using them next summer!

Patrick is a wonderful instructor and business owner. He knows what he’s doing– you’re in good hands with this company. All details are considered, the staff is prepared, and everything is safe and fun. They also have great equipment and can work with all levels. Mike was such a caring, gentle, and passionate instructor. He gave my cousin an excellent lesson, told us where a good place to buy a board was, what size wetsuit to buy, and even recommended booties for certain surf spots! Thanks again Mike!

I booked a lesson with this company and they assigned Mike to be my instructor. He gave me feedback after riding every single wave. After a few attempts I was able to successfully stand up on my own. A few of these lessons are probably all you would need with this guy to be able to successfully ride. So happy with this experience!

I decided to get a surf lesson after seeing that epic Wednesday swell up close and personal. I wanted to understand swells, wind, surfing, most importantly get over my petty fear of the ocean. Could a mom and a teen actually learn to surf within one 90 minute lesson? It didn’t seem possible, but Edy made it happen! He is an excellent teacher — a great combination of relaxed, confident (in us), encouraging, supportive and a good communicator. He had my daughter up in no time, and even got her to switch stances mid-​wave. She is hooked! I was a more challenging student, but with Edy’s help I got it. He made sure we both had a positive experience. And we had a blast. I’ll definitely seek out Learn to Surf LA and Edy next time we are in the area.

We did an afternoon lesson, what a freakin blast. I was skeptical about surfing a beach that wasn’t «world famous». Nevertheless, the waves surprised us. Surfing head high 6 foot waves. Mike taught us is about all the different waves and surfboards the industry and so cal had to offer. We decided to stick with the 9″ Bru Surf they offer. It was very stable — everyone stood up. We couldn’t believe our friends 60 something grandma stood up! We will be coming back, thanks again!!!

Kids surf camp rocks! I brought my ocean-​timid 7-​year-​old son to surf camp last week with Casey and, by the end of the course, he was asking for his own wet suit and begging to get back in the water. The instructors really helped him get over his hesitation about getting into the open water, and by day two, he rode 14 waves! The guys are really naturals with the kiddos. Too bad they don’t baby-​sit, too. Can’t wait to sign him up for another week. Thanks, everyone!

My girlfriend and I had never surfed before. Until today.
We got surf lessons from Reed at Learn to Surf LA on 7÷18÷14. It was my girlfriend’s birthday, and it was very fun!
Reed was really helpful and patient with us. We first went through some general lessons about the parts of the surfboard, what they were called, and what not to do. We then transitioned into how to approach getting on the board to catch a wave, and within the first 10 – 15 minutes or so, we were on our way to implementing what we were taught!
It was not the most natural or intuitive thing at first, but after a few tries, we were both better at getting up on the board and actually surfing! Reed was great about giving us tips of what he saw that we were doing wrong, so we were able to correct them for future attempts. It was really fun, and the water felt great (cold at first, but then you feel one with the temperature and it was very refreshing!).
Reed even took me out to the «deeper» parts of the ocean, and I was able to catch a couple of decent ones. He helps tell you when to start paddling, then will try to make sure your board is straight when that wave hits.
All in all, a great experience. I highly recommend taking lessons through Learn to Surf LA. We met a few of the other surf teachers and they were all really nice and polite. Well worth the price for the 2 hours that we got!

My husband and I just tried surfing and we are both absolutely hooked :-) now that it’s summer we can surf after work! We booked an afternoon lesson last minute with Jenny, thanks for accommodating us on such short notice! Mike (our cute instructor) made the entire thing so simple — push up, knee under hip, foot through. Mike let us know about many local surf shops in Venice as well as Santa Monica where we plan on purchasing some gear too!
In conclusion — it was a great experience and I will definitely be back in the water asap! I will probably need a few more lessons to catch waves like some of the other surfer I saw :)

My brother and I booked a lesson with Learn to Surf. He lives walking distance from El Porto. We figured we would be nuts to not start surfing since we’ve lived in LA our entire lives. I’m in my twenties my bro in his thirties. We where both standing up /​catching waves within an hour. Our instructor was Mike another LA native that was very familiar with all the beaches out in so cal. I’m glad we decided to start surfing and look forward to enjoying this amazing sport for years to come :)
I can’t wait to get bak out in the water and catch more waves ! I fell back in love with Los Angles!

Learn to Surf was great. I took private lessons and Mike had me up riding waves on the first day to my surprise. Aside from learning how to ride a wave, my instructors taught me about things like etiquette, equipment, and other places to surf. That’s why I feel like a private lesson is worth it; the instructor has time to teach you things like that. They were very responsive via email and allowed me to reschedule a couple lessons without a problem. Everybody i talked to there was very professional and friendly. In summary, super easy, convenient and effective. I recommend them.
