Hello, my name is Nick Fowler and this will mark my 6th year teaching/​tutoring languages throughout Los Angeles. Initially this was my sole focus, however these days I increasingly find myself being approached by various companies to help teach employees, translate advertisements, or serve as an interpreter from time to time as well. West LA Language Tutor has definitely expanded into some new arenas, nevertheless I remain as committed as ever to serving all of my clients’ specific needs, whether it’s helping Disney with a viral marketing campaign in French/​Spanish or a struggling 7th grader improve his grades. I take it all very seriously. Providing accurate, reliable service in a professional manner is of the utmost importance to me. I truly love my job! As a freelancer I never know where my next assignment will come from or whom I might be dealing with, which I find genuinely exciting!

I am 5th generation Portuguese from Hawaii on my father’s side. My mother on the other hand, was an English professor from the East Coast before moving to the islands over 40 years ago. One would think that straying so far from «civilization» for so long would have mellowed her penchant for constantly correcting my grammar, yet after 30 years, it still hasn’t. I assure you though, she definitely had her work cut out for her. We Hawaiians are not exactly known for our grammar skills. Her grammar-​nagging used to drive me crazy, but over time I began to realize the benefits of incessant corrections and my English skills improved dramatically.

This obsession with grammatical perfection, or perhaps more aptly hers, has greatly aided me in acquiring new languages. From 7th-​12th grade, mastering French and surfing utterly consumed me. Upon graduation, I took a year off and lived abroad in Tahiti to surf and improve my French. I ameliorated my French skills via daily interactions with

I found Nick Fowler on Unilocal after wanting to start taking Spanish lessons again after a couple of years break. I couldn’t be happier. Nick’s lessons are super effective, you move forward quickly and it’s fun! It is so much more than just learning the language — we compare languages and get a deeper understanding about the linguistics. Not only does Nick teach Spanish, he also teaches French and Portuguese.
I highly recommend Nick for language lessons and also he teaches surfing (check out Aloha Brothers) — how cool is that?!

As a business owner with a majority of Spanish speaking employees I felt it was very important for me to learn the language. I found Nick on Unilocal and am very pleased with how it’s been going. His knowledge of linguistics is amazing and he really understand the way a mind grasps a new language. I’m excited to continue to learn more and become fluent.
His price is very reasonable for private lessons on the Westside.
He also teaches French and Portuguese which is awesome.

I’ve been studying Spanish since I was in 6th grade and gained a good level of fluency through an immersion program in my twenties. But as we all know, if you don’t use it, you lose it.
When I started working with clients based in Latin America, I knew that I had to get my Spanish grammar act together. I found Nick through Unilocal and was glad to see that in addition to his in-​person sessions, he also offered Skype lessons. Even though we actually live just down the street from each other, my schedule can get crazy so it was really nice to have that flexibility right off the bat.
Nick has been an excellent teacher so far. He never let’s any of the little mistakes slide and really makes it a point to make sure that I get back to a strong foundation before moving forward. A lot of teachers might let the little things go, but Nick’s goal for his students is a strong working knowledge of the language that he builds with them week to week. He also really emphasizes writing which is so incredibly important. Even if you can hold a conversation, if you can’t remember where accents are or your grammar composition isn’t strong, your emails are just going to be embarrassing.
Definitely get in touch with Nick if you want to get your Spanish back in working shape quickly or even if you’re just starting out!

I’ve been wanting to take Spanish lessons for a while and met wish a few different instructors before Nick and I didn’t feel like I was leaving much more knowledgable of the language. I finally found Nick and have since taken 3 classes and I really feel encouraged to continue and IMO I’m doing pretty well. You definitely need to do your own side studying to supplement the lessons if you want to get your money’s worth but Nick will guide you with study tips to help you know where to start. He also has great supplemental reading suggestions for you to learn as quickly as possible :)

I came to Nick very self-​conscious about my semi-​intermediate Spanish. He helped me see that a combination of study and conversation would help me reach my goals. Nick is laid-​back and easy to work with, but he is also a stickler for correct usage. I’ve been wanting to take Spanish lessons for years for my career as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I’ve been studying with Nick for a few months and I’ve gotten farther in my language learning than I ever would have on my own or taking a class. Nick has a great method for teaching so that I learn quickly and efficiently, in other words to get conversational and fluent in as minimal time as possible. At the same time, through conversations with Nick I’m also relearning a lot of my French that I’ve lost over the years. Nick makes learning a language fun; he’s also a very funny and interesting guy to talk to. Amazing teacher! He also teaches surfing which I plan to take up… One day! Thanks a bunch, Nick! :)

I have tried to learn Spanish before, but never felt like I really got far. It seemed so daunting an undertaking and I often got discouraged. I tried to have friends help me but it wasn’t working. I found myself having only a couple of months to get to a place that I could feel comfortable getting by on my own in a Spanish only environment. I decided that I had to get serious and try something new. I was so lucky that I found Nick!!! I was so nervous to try a tutor, but he completely put me at ease. I have never found it easier to make progress on learning Spanish. I felt empowered with the tools and understanding to learn a language that had haunted me for years. I was so lucky that my hesitations to try a private tutor didn’t stop me from taking the leap and seeing Nick. It was one of the best decisions I made in my journey to learn Spanish!!!

Nick is not your traditional classroom language teacher. Having slept through 60% of my undergraduate lectures, I have never felt tired in his lessons. He is down to earth and his teaching style is exciting. He is a linguistics expert and if your serious about learning a new language, he is definitely worth the investment.

I’ve been wanting to learn French for some time and finally took the plunge and hired Nick. I researched various options but ultimately decided on personal tutoring and chose Nick based on other Unilocal reviews. It can be intimidating learning something new but Nick’s personality and approach put me at ease almost immediately. I love the fact that Nick is fluent in multiple languages — and that he’s able to draw on my 3 years of high school Spanish to provide me with practical reference points that help me understand French more easily. After months of debating whether or not to find a tutor to help me improve my spanish speaking skills I finally decided to take the plunge last October and I started looking on Unilocal… what a treasure I found with Nick! His approach to learning is fun and creative and incredibly helpful. I have a solid background in Spanish but had not practiced in years and Nick knew exactly how to guide the lessons to cater my level of proficiency. Nick is so smart and it is obvious how much he cares about his clients. He thinks outside of the box when teaching the lessons and he really knew how to make the learning fun. Despite his surfer-​boy looks (and the fact he is actually an avid surfer), Nick is an amazing teacher and brilliant linguist. He speaks 5 languages fluently, and studied linguistics while living in South America.
I’ve been taking private lessons with Nick for a couple months now and am amazed at how my Spanish has improved. I’d taken Spanish as a kid, but had major gaps in my knowledge. He helped me fill in those gaps very quickly and move on to much more advanced material — far faster than I would’ve in a group setting. At this point we’ve pretty much covered everything there is to learn in a book, and have moved on to getting me more conversant and expanding my vocabulary (Nick never shies away from teaching me the slang, or the way people really talk… as he says, with him, you learn it all!).
He’s also just a great guy, and a ton of fun to be around. If you’re thinking about taking up a language, do it with Nick.

As an über busy working woman who needed to learn Spanish quickly for impending meetings finding Nick was the perfect solution to my problem.
Nick takes a unique style he has developed through his formal education and combines it with real life experience to help non-​Spanish speakers learn quick techniques to understand and use the language in a very short time.
He also uses technology to do remote classroom chats if you can not meet in person which is great if your work takes you on the road and you need lessons, although it is ideal to meet him in person.

Nick is super great. I have a weird background in Spanish, and Nick very naturally picked up on my knowledge (and lack thereof). I’ve only been going to him for four weeks, and I definitely feel my brain stretching to accommodate and use the verb tenses and words he’s having me work with. Nick pushes me as hard as I want to be pushed, and he only makes fun of me a little bit when I accidentally say something crass. I super duper recommend him.

He teaches so much more than just language — he helped my daughter with a number of spanish assignments and because of his rich grasp of both english and spanish vocabulary he taught her to think differently — rare and talented tutor I would highly recommend to any parent!

I did a lot of research before picking a Spanish teacher and am really happy I chose Nick (West LA Language Tutor)! It has been six weeks since I started and people are amazed with how quickly I am using different vocabulary and tenses. He also caters to each student’s need to learn the language. Nick helped me to improve my English incredibly and I was accepted into a UCLA graduate program thanks to his classes. Also after 4 months of classes with him my pronunciation, grammar and reading comprehension improved beyond my expectations. I had my first lesson with nick today and all I can say is he is the best teacher that I have found even after only one lesson. I am very shy and he tried to help me overcome it and feel
comfortable. his prices are very reasonable and unlike others I have had he truly cares about his students. I know that I have more challenges with spnish than the average student I swear im a dummy but he was like don’t worry I wont give up on you I promise. that made me feel so special.
