Our knowledgeable staff, headed by our managers Alice and Mary Kay, is ready to help with any of your handcrafted gift shopping. They have become extremely adept at packaging gifts safely and quickly for travelers rushing to catch the next train. You may have seen Appalachian Spring, Union Station, in the news stories when President Clinton came for Christmas shopping every year that he was in the White House.
Our store is unique in that we go to artists and craftspeople to find handcrafted gifts that are made in America. From our designer jewelry to our handmade wooden boxes and pottery selection, you will not find anything like what you can find at Appalachian Spring.
History
Established in 1988.
We began in the Georgetown section of Washington, DC in 1968 with the goal of bringing to this community a collection of products
–that were new & uniquely different
–that were of the highest quality available
–that were designed to be both beautiful & useful
To find the products to meet our st&ards we went to the artists & craftspeople that lived & worked in the Appalachian states, from Maine to Alabama. We had grown up in this region & knew the skills & dedication to quality of these artists. We looked to this region as an expression, at that time, of a rebirth of American creativity…& thus our name: Appalachian Spring.
We continued to look for new things that met our criteria of quality, design & usefulness. As we explored other parts of the U.S. we again found more artists & craftspeople who were producing the unique items. We added exciting things from throughout the United States. Today we operate four stores in the Washington, DC & Richmond, VA areas.
