Your local True Value Hardware store offers the tools, products, and expert advice for all of your project needs. Find the right products to help you complete your weekend projects.
Apparently they are retiring/going out of business so everything in the store is for sale at 70% off. I got all kinds of crafty items(spray paint, glue) and some Christmas ornaments(colored bulbs, big bow) and some candles and other stuff here all for 2⁄3 off regular prices. Everything is dusty and most of it is so old it’s «made in USA» !! so you can get some real good bargains while they are still in business.

my favorite hardware store in the whole wide world!!! they not only have the biggest selection of every tool and rental you can imagine, but they are the nicest, kindest, most helpful people with great energy. brookland true value hardware is a true gem in the neighborhood. if you haven’t been, go soon. as of july 23, 2015, the official retirement sale began. the lovely owner, howard, is retiring after over 40 years in business and they will be closing after everything is sold! more info here:

This hardware store as been an institution in the Brookland neighborhood for 40 years. Love the staff, who are always helpful and knows where everything is the tiny store. But you better get there fast the store is closing and EVERYTHING must go. I still will not go to Home Depot.

This is one of those old fashioned«stuff is crammed in everywhere, I hope there is never a fire but if there is there are 15 fire extinguishers 5 ft away from me» hardware stores. As other reviewers have said, you almost can’t come in here and NOT buy something. All sorts of hardware and household items. I was trying to find low profile, flat plug extension cords. After checking Best Buy and CVS, I stumbled across this place and they had them! They have a little bit of everything. Nails, tools, grilling supplies, cast iron cookware, household needs(plungers, towel racks), too many things to list. Drop in and see what catches your eye. Support a local business at the same time.

I love shopping here. great selection helpful staff. cheaper than the art supply store for some items and all-around better shopping experience than my nearest Home Despot– which doesn’t seem to carry or stock what I need and has pretty sucky service. I even buy a lot of kitchen, cleaning & laundry stuff here– old school and not picked over like Target.

If you need a part, and can’t find it at other hardware stores, you need to stop at True Value in Brookland. This place has it all. I needed these little hooks for my old curtains, I search online, at other big stores, and couldn’t find what I needed. When I was getting keys copies, I started to look around the store. They seem to have something of everything. i ended up finding the hooks I needed. Great place. They also have some really good candy selection, not the usual stuff.

This is a cool little spot that I always pass. I recently went in to get keys copied($ 4/ea) and was pleasantly surprised by the selection. On such a small plot of land they manage to fit an insane amount of merchandise. The staff were helpful and nice. Give these guys your business and not HD.

They have(almost) everything you could possibly think, which is both a curse and a blessing. The place is packed to the brim with tools, supplies and replacement parts; however, that means that navigating the overcrowded aisles can be somewhat challenging. The owners are a bit curmudgeonly, but the staff guys are super helpful, attentive and appear to know where every item is kept in the store. I also really appreciate the tool rental services. I have given up on trying to fix and maintain my lawnmower because they offer a two hour rental for only $ 26(plus deposit).

Simply the best old school hardware store around. If you need just one of something, or you’re not sure what you need, this is the place to come. Staff is super knowledgeable and will likely give you unsolicited advice. Some people might not like that, but every time it has been staff telling me something I didn’t know that I needed to know so I consider this unsolicited advice a feature, not a bug. ASK where things are; store is packed to the gills so you pretty much need to rely on staff knowledge of inventory. Another great example of their customer service — I brought in a 2-piece plumbing fixture cartridge that had broken and they’d only sell me a replacement for the 1 broken piece(instead of doubling their money by selling me both pieces).

The guy in the back who helps you with the paint and varnish etc. is a hell of a guy and a wealth of knowledge.

When I shop here I am usually met at the front door by someone ready to help me find what I need. They know their inventory and they know hardware. I love this neighborhood store!

This hardware store has EVERYTHING you could possibly want. literally, they have EVERYTHING – even things you wouldn’t think a hardware store could have. Every time we need something, we go to the hardware store and inevitably find it… plus, the cramped interior is part of the charm. the staff always knows where things are. I definitely recommend it.

Recently moved to the area and already have made two stops in the store. The staff is knowledgeable and prompted to help. They seem to have the answer to everything. I already had X-ed the HD off Rhode Island years ago and find this small shop delightful! Are the workers there nosey, short and to the point borderline abrasive? yes!, but where I normally take pride on having ALL the answers and do not appreciate anyone telling me what to do, when it comes to hardware… I want someone to tell me what I need to hear… not what I want to hear.

I have lived way down the street from this store since 1974. I came here for the first time 4÷4÷2011. Now, I completely understand my unabashed love of the big-box, impersonal, non-customer-service, self-check-out Home Depot. I do not need insulting, nosey, sassy-mouth cashiers in my life. ATALL. I doubt if I will ever return to this place.

It is the anti — Home Depot. They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff with a small town feel. Before you go to HD and rifle through their shelves with no help from the staff try the Brookland True Value on 12th street NE.

i really like this store. It’s convenient for almost all small home improvement and crafting needs and the staff has always been helpful. Sometimes I’m not sure what I’m looking for but they help me figure it out and find it for me in the store which is so packed it could be hard to find things on my own. They also have a large paint section and rent out equipment of all kinds. I really hope the neighborhood supports this place instead of going to Home Depot. Of course, this place won’t have everything Home Depot has(this store is the size of the first floor of a rowhouse) but for quick items and paint, it is where I’ll head even when I move out of this neighborhood.
