Howard Johnson Inn Washington,DC

**** HORRIFYING!!! ***** Doesn’t even deserve a full star. My mother has COPD and the moment we walked in she couldn’t breathe. We walked into the room it smelled, was dirty, the room looked liked it hadn’t been touched since the 70’s. I would have taken a picture but we didnt stay more than 2 mins in there. Luckily I booked online site and was able to get a refund.

Yuck! Ewww! We stayed here for one night and it was enough for me. I’ve never been to a hotel where the front desk clerk needs to be in bulletproof cage. The people who stayed here were shady. The room we stayed in had this mini fridge that made this weird humming sound.
The other reviewers are right; this hotel is located in a sketchy area. I didn’t feel safe leaving my hotel room. I would never stay here again.

Would not stay here again. Room stinks the staff isn’t friendly and the pool isn’t even working. Why put that in the ad and not have it work. Wanted my money back and wouldn’t give don’t stay here

let me start by saying that I have stayed in a wide range of hotels from hostels and budget hotels to 5 star ones. My friend booked this hotel before reading the reviews and we thought it would be fine for a couple of nights. but I can simply say this has been the WORST decision we made.
There is nothing wrong with budget hotels as long as they are clean. This place is more like a homeless shelter than an inn.
1. BED BUGS — we were supposed to stay for 4 nights but had to check out after the first night when I woke up with a sweaty itchy back and randomly found a tiny bed bug next to my pillow after I woke up. The reception was not surprised when we complained about it, they simply refunded the rest of our stay.
2. Dangerous neighborhood– the neighborhood on the nearby streets is nice, however, the hotel itself is located in a very very sketchy street. It is not recommended for you to walk around there. we were stopped, followed and stalked by multiple street people.
3. Dirty — The rooms as well as the reception area is smelly and the sheets are extremely old and dirty. Almost yellow from being so old and there were cigarette burns all over the carpet.
4. It seems like the hotel is being offered to homeless people when there is vacancy. Almost every room we passed by seemed like it had families/​groups of people living there for long periods. We even saw a woman that was punched in the face.
5. Our door did not lock properly which was another scary factor considering the location of the hotel.
If you are thinking that you’ll save money, you are absolutely wrong. We paid $ 74 dollars a night for this hotel and were able to find a 4 star hotel in downtown Washington after we checked out for just a little more money.

We stayed here for a vacation, well if you are looking for a place that is close to mass transit then you need to find a different hotel. If you are looking for a good hotel to put your head down and sleep (yes, it is quite even thought the train tracks are in the back), and a good clean bathroom. This is a good place for all that.
I was here for 8 day and night with a bunch of sightseeing in the Washington DC area, plus visiting some friends and having a few friends meet up with us at the hotel. was great fro all that, plus when we finally got our car (half way through the trip), we were able to do everything we wanted to do in a short amount of time due to being close to the highway, freeways and interstate.
As for the hotel the staff could do a better job, the breakfast was something, but not much so do not get your hopes up to high. Otherwise this is just an average hotel.

EW and Terrible Service! DON’T STAY HERE!
Our flight was delayed due to the terrible weather conditions and I tried calling the Howard Johnson where we booked two nights (NEVER AGAIN) but no one was answering the phones. I called at least 20 times, left 3 voicemails, and wrote a couple of emails in attempts to get ahold of someone. I was unable to reach anyone.
Upon landing and arriving at the Howard Johnson, I walk in to the lobby and up to the front desk to find the man who was supposed to be answering calls and attending to customers was FAST ASLEEP and snoring. I knocked on the THEFT BARRIER (WTF…why would they even need that?!) till he woke up. Luckily, they did not cancel my reservation BUT gave all the two bed rooms away… I requested this when I was booking with Expedia. I was so annoyed at that point I just took the one bed and demanded a room change to a two bed the next night.
We walked up to our room and UGH! It was so gross… the carpets were horrendous, the bathroom had weird stains all over it, the towels had thick black hairs embedded in them, and… the bed even had a few bed bugs… I COULDN’T SHIT OR SLEEP DURING MY STAY HERE… I WAS TOO GROSSED OUT.
This place brings the Howard Johnson name down to an unacceptable level… I understand that it wont be a 5 star accomadation but DAMN… at least keep it clean and presentable. I didn’t even touch the breakfast the next morning.
Not only was the hotel itself a total shit hole but the area around it was super sketchy. I was afraid to go out at night without my brother or boyfriend. Prostitution, drugs… you name it and I’m sure they’ve got it within reasonable reach.
IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, DO NOT STAY HERE.

Stay away from this place. It’s got bugs in the beds, horrible service, broken TVs, bad water, and the location is very out of the way from DC. If I could give this place 0 stars I would.

Horrible service, horrible grounds keeping, sketchy area. Uncomfortable beds, crap tv, key cards for the room barely work. If I wanted to lose sleep from fear of being killed in my sleep, I would join the Army and go back to Iraq. The worst part is there is no sense of pride on the part of the staff. The can and do give less of a crap each day. If it got bulldozed tomorrow I would not be surprised.

Our travel agent put us in this hotel for our vacation to Washington. It was horrible, and I don’t recommend this place for many reasons. Prostitutes, bad area, very far from the metro station, bad service, the rooms don’t look clean, and the bulletproof glass in front of the reception desk scared me so much that we decided to go to a different hotel the same day we arrived.

I recently stayed a week and staff was friendly. Internet reception is spotty, but everything I needed was available to keep me comfortable!

I’ve always thought Howard Johnson Express Inns were a good value for the money, but I’m not so sure about this one. Pluses: bed and pillow were very comfortable, price was good for DC, some free food in the morning. Negatives: if you don’t have a car, it’s a pretty long walk to the bus or metro and you need to cross a busy street with no crosswalk, noisy at night from the busy street, «breakfast» selection very limited: coffee, OJ, bread /​jam, bagels, 2 kinds of dry cereal, one airpot of coffee meant they kept running out every few minutes and had to make another, wireless internet is available but spotty and slow reception. Unless you’re really on a budget, this isn’t as good as most HoJo Expresses.

Best Hotel if your looking to still be close to all attractions, close to Metro. It is not the best location however it has recently been renovated !!

This place may have been one of the cheapest but I would never stay here again. The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything including voices upstairs. You have to talk to the front desk through a bullet proof glass. The room was good size but I couldn’t get the A/​C to work until I figured out it needed to be reset at the receptacle. It’s in a really bad area of DC and if you have valuable items not a safe place to keep them.

This place was disgusting! I have a feeling that we weren’t in a good neighborhood, and the room was awful. Water leaking from the room above ours had stained and warped the ceiling in our room. The room stank, and it wasn’t a nice place to sleep at all.

Howard Johnson is not the cheapest place I’ve stayed at. However, it rates highly as one of the places with worst service. The day that I stayed there, they were putting in new furniture into all the rooms. Instead of offering me a place to secure my bags, they just told me to hang about and use the internet. They just kept getting me to hang on and in the meanwhile, nothing was being done to get my room ready.
I would generally avoid unless you need to stay very cheap. The internet wireless connection is a bit spotty.
