Residence Inn By Marriott DC / Foggy Bottom

I’ve been a loyal Marriott guy for over 15 years. I’ve never been so disappointed. Apparently several rooms next to mine were having repairs and the noise was too excessive. This was on top of a few smaller issues. When in DC, consider another location.

For a last minute trip to DC, our room at the Residence Inn was amazingly priced (booked via HotelTonight) and we were pretty comfortably able to sleep 4 people in here (although by the end of the stay, 1 left and stayed with friends). The location is great, the hotel is great — and if you get a good price; it’s the ideal room if you’re coming into town with friends and are looking to split a room.
Positives:
1) Very comfortable beds, a living room/​kitchen that is stocked with free popcorn, a semi comfy couch to sleep on the living room (yeah, you get a living room — it’s a Residence Inn!), microwaves, fridges — all those good amenities!
2) Pretty decent (for a hotel) complimentary breakfast everyday. It’s served until 9am on weekdays and 9:30am on weekends, but I honestly suggest showing up about 5 minutes before it ends 8:55 or 9:25 (or way earlier), just don’t show up 15−25minutes before it ends since it’s a mad house, but 5 minutes before there is a decent amount of food and few people.
3) Free Internet — was able to stream TV shows with modest success.
4) Great location — walkable to white house, museums, Georgetown.
Negatives:
1) The air conditioner is a bit uncomfortable if turned on for the person sleeping in the living room.
Other than that, I’d highly recommend the stay! Staff was super friendly.

My only complaint was it was hard to find.
Came here to drop my daughter off at GWU and the room and as perfect size with the separated bedroom and kitchenette. Valet is expensive too. But nice, clean rooms, free breakfast. Friendly front desk staff. Close to campus, it’s across the street from GWU’s Hotel. Nice area. Foggy bottom metro a couple blocks away.

Rough stay for me at this Residence Inn. But before I go further, let me add that I am a very frequent traveler and am (was) a bit of a Marriott whore. I will drive to get to a Marriott vs take another hotel close to where I am working for the week. Clearly a mistake this trip…
First, tough place to find. Zero parking, must use valet. There is no other option and at $ 40 a day, they know it. Valet team is courteous as is the front desk staff. In fact, I had no issue with the staff. Well, on two occasions, I found the desk empty. Waited for a few minutes each time, one for valet.
Room was ok. Smelled like previous smoking room though. AC works decent, except humidity in the room never really dropped. Keep in mind, DC in early August.
Bed was a king, pretty uncomfortable. But, bonus, they are replacing mattresses. Got a note in my room, sorry but it’s happening and you don’t get to schedule or push back. Not ok. I paid to have a place to chill between meetings. At 4pm, the picture attached is how I found my room. Poor scheduling and logistics.
Bathroom is poorly laid out. Only room for one and hope you don’t leave the door open. If so, you can’t exit the shower since there isn’t enough room. Oh by the way, if you don’t leave the door open, room will be completely fogged up. There is no fan.
All in all… does not live up to Marriott standards that I expect. Decent budget hotel for cheap family vacation. Not for someone who wants nice place to relax when back from a conference or time in the hill. Deeply disappointed in Marriott.

I’ve stayed at this hotel several times over the past 18 months and I find the service exceptional each time. Once, when I arrived close to midnight and still needed to eat, the concierge was most helpful. Recently, I arrived early and couldn’t check-​in but when they took my bags they offered me a complimentary snack until check-​in began. Every time I’ve needed a late check out, it’s been granted. The staff is professional, helpful and most importantly kind. Although I don’t normally have someone clean the room while I’m there for a 2 – 3 day visit, when I needed extra towels they were brought in quickly.
Breakfast isn’t a big deal and this is not a gourmet dining experience, but the kitchen buffet area is clean. Sometimes, the six tables they have will not accommodate everyone who wants to eat at 9am on a Saturday morning but I’ve never had a problem finding a make shift spot.
For a family hotel, the place is fabulous! There are two computers in the lobby if you need to print out boarding passes or check on directions. There is also free Wi-​fi in each room.
The bedrooms are spacious, the bathrooms generous in size and the living area is great for when someone goes to bed early or sleeps late. The kitchen is clean, too although we’ve never used more than the full size refrigerator for storing left over and snacks.
I hope to continue staying here on my future trips to the capital because the location near Foggy Bottom is so convenient. There’s a Whole Foods around the corner and several restaurants. We used Über once to get around but used the Metro to get home for convenience. The proximity of the metro is key.

The hotel was perfectly located… but we had some issues with noisy pipes. The staff took care of us and we would stay again. I would recommend the hotel for business or leisure. The breakfast was excellent.

I can not recommend the Residence Inn in Washington D.C. There was a noise that was coming from the ceiling or the vents, I’m not sure which. This noise kept me up all night long. If you’re staying at this hotel, make sure to buy some ear plugs. And it wasn’t just me. My dad stayed in another room down the hall, and he heard the same nose. It was so bad I actually recorded the sound on my iPhone.

FEMALE TRAVELERS BEWARE! I recently stayed at this location. Despite hanging up a «do not disturb» sign when I left in the morning, housekeeping entered my room and my laptop was stolen. Most disappointing was the way the corporate office responded. They did not offer any compensation, but instead said that I had no proof and that they had no liability in this situation. This, despite the fact that a bolt cutter was used to cut through the safety latch. The police think this was either done by housekeeping or an accomplice, in an effort to divert attention from themselves, since the safety latch would only have been closed when I was in the room, and the computer was taken while I was out of the room. In retrospect, I wish I had used the in room safe… but honestly, I don’t feel that a business with so little respect for my privacy and safety that I can’t trust them to honor a «do not disturb» sign is worthy of my patronage. Traveling is inconvenient enough without worrying about strangers pilfering through anything that is not locked in the safe.

We stayed here twice in our 4 day stay because Kay (the guy working the front desk) was so awesome. We had reservations somewhere else but came back to the residence because of the awesome service! Every time we needed something Kay told us where we could find the best food and bars in town. I’ll never stay anywhere else in DC!

I was here for a work-​related trip recently. The staff was always courteous and helpful. Although there seem to be a lot of families with children staying here, the hotel is on a relatively quiet street and I never heard much noise coming from the hallway or from my neighbors. The suite was big, clean, and well appointed. It’s close by to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s and my room had a fridge, a microwave, a stovetop, and a complete set of cookware and diningware, which was super convenient and provided many eating options. The gym and pool were quite small but clean (and included). The breakfast provided a decent amount of choices and the happy hour was a nice touch – beer, wine, and snacks (one day they had meatloaf, potatoes, and gravy, and another pita, hummus dips, and Caprese Salad). The only drawback was the noise level at the breakfast and/​or happy hour, but what do you expect, really? All around, it was a pleasant stay and a deal given all that was included.

We started our stay at the Avenue Suites a couple blocks away. The Residence Inn here is far superior. I’m rating this 5/​5, but know very clearly we are talking about a 3 or 3.5 star hotel.
As mentioned by otters, the staff was very helpful. Rooms and lobby are very clean. Kitchen items are modern and well kept.
Everyone mentions the great breakfast. However from Monday-​Wednesday, the ‘social hour’ in the evening is nothing to sneeze at. First there is the free wine, beer (Blue Moon, Sam Adams), and soft drinks. Salad and a snack bordering on a meal is also provided. One night was a full hot dog and hamburger BBQ on the roof upstairs. Supplement this with something from the nearby Whole Foods and your dinner worries are over.
The Metro is very close and Georgetown is a very short walk away. The Lincoln Memorial is ~20 minutes walk. There’s a CVS in the Watergate complex across the road. Whole Foods and Starbucks are at the GWU campus a block or two away.
Now for my complaints. The old fabric couches in the rooms have to go. They are a huge negative. If they would also replace the rugs with wood or tile, it’s suddenly a 4 star hotel.
There is also a dated pool on the roof. It’s perhaps a 20×20 square, ranging from 3 – 5 feet deep. I honestly don’t know how much could be done to improve this area, but it’s not good when the pool is a drawback.
That all said, we were very pleased with our stay here!

A really great hotel experience in DC… over the last 15 years traveling for work this hotel was the best I’ve had in a while.
The hotel was clean the staff was super friendly and went out if their way to help you and every time my friend and I walked through the door there was always a friendly nice greeting.
You think free breakfast is going to be gross right? Nope not here you could get everything from waffles to cereal and almost everything in between and the staff that greets you in the breakfast area-​very cheerful and nice!
The rooms were very very spacious for DC I think of it as NYC that they may be smaller than you would like but there was a kitchen, couches and a lot of space to move around. It was recently renovated so super clean and new.
The lobby area was nice as well updated and modern.
The location was close to everything you would need a Whole Foods a little down the way, restaurants and even a little 7 – 11 for just quick items. I didn’t take the Metro but I know it was close by and there were always Taxi cabs a plenty
I would def. stay here again and again.

First and foremost, let me compliment the staff — I would give them, alone, a five star review! Norman met us at the door, and each day, both greeted us with a friendly smile and good morning, as well as offering us kind words upon our departure for the day. Ebony, along with the ENTIRE front desk staff, was friendly, cheerful, and genuine. I would be proud to have any of them as a part of my own personal staff in the business that I own and operate.
Breakfast is outstanding — lots of choices that remain refilled consistently, and the food is YUMMY. Again, the staff is outstanding — Terrell, who I saw each day of my stay, was focused on her job ensuring that tables were clean and food topped off.
The four stars rather than five, you may ask… the rooms have a bit to be desired. I am a loyal Marriott customer — it’s the ONLY hotel line I stay with being a Platinum member. The rooms are clean and stocked, but a bit shabbily maintained — the carpet is shredded in areas amongst other small issues; nonetheless, making it a four star rather than a five star property.

If you’re planning a trip to DC this is a great hotel to consider. It’s very close to a Metro station, which can quickly get you to a number of attractions in downtown DC such as the National Mall. This particular Residence Inn is recently renovated and is very well-​decorated and clean. The lobby is inviting and encourages you to mingle with the friendly staff or other guests as if you were in your own home.
The free breakfast options are spot on: choose from 3 types of waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and even an eggs benedict style dish with spinach. During the day, you can find light appetizers such as meats, cheese, crackers, fresh cookies/​brownies and fruit spritzers.
The rooms were very clean, the kitchen had all the utensils you might need, and the beds were very comfy. The hotel is also a 5-​min cab ride away from Georgetown where you can do some quality shopping, catch a movie or grab something to eat at the top-​rated restaurants.
This Residence Inn is one of my favorite locations, and I’ve been to several Residence Inns around the country (both good and bad)!

This was the worst hotel experience I ever had. Initially, when we arrived we thought it was going to be great — the location is close to a Metro station and the rooms were spacious. They even offer free breakfast! However, because of the free breakfast that starts at 7AM, they begin setting up much earlier and the noise is extremely loud! After they finished setting up, the hoards of people coming down to eat is also loud and the sound travels right through to the other floors. Initially we thought ok, at least we can eat breakfast, then close the curtains and get some sleep! The breakfast ended at 9:30AM and through noon, staff is moving tables around, throwing silverware into boxes and yelling!
We went to ask the front desk if there’s anything they could do to accommodate us because of the noise. First, they said because we booked through a third party they can’t refund us, but if we had booked through Marriott then we could be fully reimbursed. She then went on to say this is just how this hotel is set up and it’s just always loud. It wasn’t much of an apology. Finally she said she could give us some Marriott points. We asked if they would be enough for a free night since we could consider that similar to reimbursement. She said no, it would only be points to start a new account and we would work our way up to a free room. We then said, but you just told us you would otherwise reimburse us and she denied it and said she never said that and would have just «seen what she could do.»
Finally, we at least asked for late checkout. Initially they said no because it’s very full and they won’t even give that to elite members. I asked to speak to a supervisor and they agreed to give us one extra hour.
This lack of customer service really hurts. The mismanagement of how breakfast is handled and the lack of warning for noise and sincere apology really left a bad taste in my mouth.

This is the hotel that I recommend my DC visitors to stay at! It was recently taken over by Marriott and renovated.
The lobby is beautiful and open with lots of tables (both community-​style and more private), lounging chairs and bar stools. This is where they have complimentary breakfast, which includes coffee and juices, personalized waffle station, eggs, sausage, breads, cereals, etc. They have televisions there as well.
It seems that they’re still working on the elevators because one of them isn’t working yet.
The rooms are very spacious each with a kitchen, living room with television, eating table, couch (I believe it’s a pullout) and desk. Then there is a spacious bedroom and bathroom, all renovated as well.
The hotel is very close to the Foggy Bottom Metro (a 5-​minute walk) and the Kennedy Center.
There is also complimentary WiFi. My fave!

Perhaps one of the best places to stay in the Foggy Bottom area. This hotel, originally Washington Guest Suites, was recently taken over by Marriott. Marriott did a great job renovating and reconfiguring the space. Each sleeping room has a kitchen, living room with desk and eating area; separate bedroom and bathroom.
The renovations are terrific. The bathrooms were completely renovated; kitchens updated; living room furniture and carpets replaced; new work area and eating area and everything repainted.
Each room has a flat screen TV in the bedroom and the living room.
The common space was redone from top to bottom. A gorgeous lobby and socializing area that offers cocktails in the evening and complimentary breakfast daily that is plentiful, not just fruit and granola bars. Communal tables as well as private tables for dining, both work well for the business traveler or families.
A little business center, marketplace, laundry and fitness center top it off.
A great place to stay for parents visiting George Washington University or if you are in Foggy Bottom for business.
I have stayed here many times before and during the renovations and take over and it was well worth the wait!
