Schakolad Chocolate Factory

Wonderful, fantastic chocolates. I can’t believe I missed out on the recent groupon! Darn!
Friendly staff. The owner is very nice. Lots of fun, tasty creations. Huge selection. Reasonably priced.
Chocolate peanut butter cup is my favorite, but I’ve tried the dark, white, truffles, turtles, chocolate pops and more and it’s all been exceptional.
I love it.

I bought a groupon for this place and decided to use it last week. The lady behind the counter was nice and helped me calculate how much I still had everytime I added sth to my order.
The chocolate covered cookies were really good, but my favorite is definitely the choco covered maltese. Enjoy!

The location stinks and feels extremely corporate, as Schakolad is nestled smack in a high-​rise without the artisan feel that a place like this is supposed to have.
But it was the closest chocolate place Unilocal recommended me, and so Shakolad it was. Again, the inside looks more like a chocolate hobby shop than a magical candy factory, but form follows function, or something like that.
Oh, as for the actual chocolate. A mix and match box was $ 20 for 20 pieces, which didn’t seem too terribly priced. I’m not a regular chocoholic, so I couldn’t tell you if the value to sweet ratio was buy-​worthy.
I picked up a double of 10 flavors, and as a gift, it comes in a decently packaged brown-​ish box with the fancy Schakolad font. Taste-​wise, everything has been solid so far, although I wish I had written down what I procured, because it’s a bit of a guessing game to figure out the flavors.
There’s some nifty chocolatier stuff here, so if brown is what you’re looking for, look at what Schakolad can do for you.

I would like to start by saying that Schakolad, Sam and his staff have never let me down with their array of chocolates and delicious confections or their welcome.
I am always so happy to go down 19^th street and stop by, never able to leave without buying a few truffles and boxes of white/​dark chocolate. Whether its a graduation, baby shower or funny diet joke, Sam seems to have specialty chocolates for every occasion.
I am particularly fond of the key lime truffle (YUMM), the white chocolate which is my favorite! and the dark chocolate for the hubby. What was incredibly interesting was that going back to «fine» chocolate like ghirradelli, lindt and especially godiva, I had to throw it out because it wasn’t as delicious and definately not as satisfying.
Do yourself a favor and stop by this sweet spot for a treat. Whether its gelato or a truffle, you can’t go wrong. Just make sure you watch your waistline and share the goods, because you will find yourself stopping by more often than you realize. :)

While the outside isn’t so charming (it’s just another place in a large tall building in Dupont) – when I walked into this small shop I found myself surrounded by beautiful packages of chocolates, piled high around the room… just waiting for me to try them. A mini chocolate adventure had begun, i marveled at chocolate lolipops (some for easter) to fudge to assorted chocolates of a wide range of flavors. Coconut, nutty, orange, other citrus, fruit, you name it.
Now it was cold out, so I didn’t opt for gelato. They have some nice packages that look like they’d be a great gift for a birthday, anniversary, or just Friday night with the girls! I like being able to choose the flavors that go in the box, yum!
I had a groupon, which made the purchase much more affordable (1lb. chocolates for 40 $ I think). Otherwise, it’s a pretty penny for these chocolates!
Overall, it’s a nice small shop – nice staff, very personable – and lovely tasting chocolates. Nice spread of dark chocolate, which is my fav!

Dark chocolate with the smooth flavor usually only found in milk chocolate…
After drooling for a fair amount of time I settled on a dozen chocolate-​dipped strawberries (the Dark chocolate are out of this world) and a cup of Chocolate Gelatto.
Their chocolates are blended in-​house and are certainly worth visiting. Very friendly staff, and an amazing selection of chocolates. They have some beautiful chocolate items like shoes, hearts, boxes, you name it!
Quite possibly the best chocolate gelatto I’ve ever had.

Though the chocolate looked amazing, what drew me into this place was the sign outside the store advertising the gelato. I’m hooked and can’t resist the stuff, so I waltzed right in and bought one scoop of the pistachio. I loved it. What a nice surprise to happen upon this place in busy Dupont Circle! I’ll definitely return to try some other flavors. Oh yeah, and to buy some of that chocolate stuff, too. :)

Man, this is what crack must taste like. Talk about addictive; the chocolate covered pretzels are just down right outrageously delicious. I perfer the white chocolate ones over the milk or dark chocolate. Oh yeah, I had the hot chocolate here when it was cold out. That was excellent as well. Lots to choose from at this spot, but I tend to stick to the classics! FTW!

If you ever need a chocolate hockey puck, chocolate cell phone, or a white chocolate soccer ball, this is your stop.
Upon entering, I was overwhelmed with so many chocolate options everywhere, in every shape, size, and form. Chocolate covered fruit, chocolate gelato, hot chocolate, chocolate computer, chocolate roses, you can think it of, they’ve got it… covered in white chocolate, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate. I’m pretty sure if you think of something they haven’t made in chocolate, they can make it special order for you. They can customize and write whatever you’d like on the item you purchase.
Even if you’re not a chocolate lover, this place is great to buy gifts for coworkers, friends, family, etc. If you’re like me and you love chocolate, then I recommend going in there after you’ve eaten (because there’s no way you’ll be able to resist — it just smells so good and you’ll spend twice as much).
The service is top notch. The staff is friendly and helpful. And if you’re buying gifts for someone, a big plus is that their bags are adorable and they can act as the gift bag with tissue paper for anything purchased from there.
According to their website, their mission is, «To create the finest and freshest chocolates made on premises at each location using the best available ingredients». I could taste that mission in every bite of chocolate I’ve had from there.

Delicious, unique and great service! I went by to get some little Easter treats for my siblings. They have all sorts of chocolate stuff and molds. I want to go back as soon as I have a good excuse. Plus the lady who helped me was so nice and they were patient while I decided what I wanted. I tried some chocolate myself and it is so fresh and milky, it just melts in your mouth!

This place has the ABSOLUTE best Hot Chocolate! They make each cup individually with melted chocolate and frothed milk, and you can even get it «flavored» with a truffle. My favrotie is the Grand Marnier flavored one :)

The service here was really great, the prices were reasonable, and they offered all sorts of little novelty chocolates, which were very cute and make great gifts.
However, the quality of the chocolate itself was just kind of average. Also, please remember that making candies and actually making chocolate are two totally different things — the Scharffen Berger factory in Berkeley makes chocolate (from actual cacao beans & it is EXCELLENT) and, from what I could see, Schakolad buys chocolate and makes candies, which are adorable and taste pretty good.
I will totally go back to buy little gifts and try the gelato, which could bump up the rating to four stars.

I noticed in the DC Golden Triangle newsletter (
) that Schakolad was running daily specials including $ 1 for a small gelato on Thursdays. So I thought I would give them another try. Unfortunately, I am going to stick with my original two stars. The pistachio gelato, usually my favorite, was nutty but not identifiably pistachio… Next time I will walk by and keep the $ 1 in my pocket!

I don’t know that the prices were terribly much higher than a Godiva or ultra-​gourmet store — but when you compare the costs of making each piece in store with mass production, it’s definitely not a bad price overall.
I thought the dark chocolate was great — not the darkest I’ve ever had, but definitely worthy of praise. Perhaps I’m just not the culinary sort, but I definitely couldn’t replicate any of the chocolates I tried.
I also enjoyed talking with the manager — he was friendly, answered all my questions, gave me samples, and showed me some of the shaped chocolates. I’ll definitely go back for birthday presents and the like for a more «unique» gift than a gold box from Godiva.
