Avenue of the Giants

No dogs allowed on the trails. Good thing there’s tons of shade here for pets to rest in the car.
Beautiful place to visit. Make sure to stop by visitor center n have the knowledgable n friendly rangers to introduce you the area. There is an easy, small .6 mile loop to walk abt across the street. N just a bit further north there’s the founder grove which has another .5 mile loop casual stroll.

Go go go! Such a pretty 31 mile drive.
Unfortunately we started around 6pm on in June, so it was getting dark & the visitors center was closed. But! You can get a little map at the beginning of your journey which is helpful. Not too helpful for people onlyyyy driving through & not taking any of the trails in to the forest.
The toilets at the visitors center had no soap or hand towels, so have your own stuff to use before going in there.
Definitely do the $ 6 drive through the tree for the sheer novelty. Everyone in your car will have a hoot!

you will find, Tallest trees on Earth, towering over this magnificent 30−32-mile stretch of Highway 254, that follows the Eel River through Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
Follow the driving route signs and you will reach visitor center where, You can get a map and information .
there are many trails in this park as it is 53,000 acre large state park :), Founder’s Tree Loop is a very nice n short n easy trail for the people, who are looking to experience a walk whereas The Rockefeller Loop is more secluded trail and i personally really liked it .
the views are breathtaking and sound of nature is mesmerizing.
make sure to travel bit further and go to fern canyon and gold bluff beach.
fern canyon has ferns which are 325 million old, and the hike in water is amazing .

Such a beautiful stretch of road. These trees are nature’s gift to God. Simply put you realize how small we really are! Just stunning to drive through here!

If you love trees and the beauty of nature then this is a 31 mile drive that will be one of the best you ever take. There are many points that you can pull off and take a little detour hike or go into the park areas and do the same. Truly a life experience that is a must.

Beautiful scenic alternative route when traveling up 101 North. We stopped to see the external tree house and the drive thru tree in Leggett. Very memorable and nice to take a break from sitting in the car on a long trip.

Great side road when going up or down the 101. You get to see the beyond massive trees and people watch along the way. Even if you’re limited for time, you’ll get brilliant views of nature at her finest. If you have some time to kill, park, and stroll along these monsters.

When you are from the desert this much green makes you sing. This drive was so beautiful. There were trees on both sides of the road and they were just beautiful and green. There were some parts of the drive where we felt like we were the only ones on the road. Did I mention that it was so green?

Es ist einfach unglaublich! Wer in der Nähe ist, muss sich das anschauen! Man weiß gar nicht wo man überall hingehen und schauen muss, so viele und noch mehr wunderschöné Redwoods, die soooo groß sind, dass einem schwindlig wird. Auch noch Eintrittsgeld! Welch ein Glück das sie hier singt geschützt werden. Für uns ein Naturwunder!

I can’t memorialize a road trip without a quick note about the Avenue of the Giants. Unfortunately, our drive through the redwoods, although inspiring, was cut short by kiddie toileting needs, so my best suggestion to you would be make sure everyone takes care of bodily functions before you begin the relaxing, calm, meandering drive through this magnificent country. There are no easily-​accessible bathrooms or visitors centers, so you’ll find the calm turn frantic pretty quickly. I do wish we could have enjoyed more, but what we saw was as amazing a tree-​lined drive as you’ll ever enjoy. Note: there are a number of paid tourist attractions a short way from here, but the drive-​through-​a-​tree attraction had a wait that would have taken hours in the heat. Honestly, I didn’t miss that, since we got to drive through these living wonders. My hubby said it really reminds you of your place in the universe. It certainly does. Prerequisite for anyone that needs schooling in why public lands must be preserved.

Drove through at sunset, as rays of sunshine peeked through the trees and illuminated the forest in ways unlike anything I’ve never seen before. Absolutely enchanting… Like, I almost expected a fairy to fly by with a trail of glittering dust behind her.

This is probably one of my favorite part during our long drive to Northern California. Unfortunately we did not stop or take a walk this time but I love the idea of slowly cycling through the Avenue of the Giants. The trees were huge as if the Ents were taking care of them but I heard that these were actually new, the old ones were already cut and murdered a long time ago. Hopefully in the near future, I can go back there and enjoy a day just walking around those Redwoods.
As you go further, the trees get bigger. I was enjoying the ride so much i forgot to take some pictures.

This place is the most amazing thing you will ever see! Definitely a must see if you are traveling on the west coast! 31 mile stretch of old highway 254. The kids loved it and actually put their iPhones away to experience the majestic Giants! If you can, I suggest you take a road trip and check them out! Absolutely beautiful!

Unless you are in an absolute rush go through The Avenue of the giants. You will see amazing trees with huge trunks. Take out your camera and shoot away. Very scenic and tranquil.

Beautiful drive, lots of greenery, plenty of places to stop along the side for hiking, picnics, taking pictures and of all that good stuff.
It was relaxing to cruise through such a picturesque destination.

FANTASTIC DRIVE! And great places to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way! Lots of trials to hike too. A MUST DO on a trip to northern California.
Can cross it off my bucket list.

A magnificent 31 mile scenic drive in Northern California. Gigantic Redwood trees line much of the road.
The 31 miles travel along a portion of old Highway 101. This road runs parallel to the current 101 Freeway. If you are not in a hurry, then I highly recommend taking a detour to drive along this fantastic road!!!
The Avenue of the Giants starts in Phillipsville in the South and ends at Pepperwood in the North. There are stops along the road where you can picnic, go fishing, go camping, and just simply explore the Redwood tree groves.
Speed limit is 45mph. With all our stops along the Avenue of the Giants, it took us approximately several hours to complete. If you do not stop, then it will probably be about a 30 minute to 1 hour detour from the main highway 101.
As I mentioned earlier, I highly recommend traveling the Avenue of the Giants!!! Mother Nature is displayed at her finest here!

The Avenue of the Giants is one of my favorite places in the world. My husband and I entered the Avenue via the North Entrance and picked up a guided tour. It was a fantastic (31 mile) drive.
Tips:
1. Stop in Miranda and fuel up at the end of your drive (if you entered from the North).
2. Truly if you do not have the time to stop at every grove indicated in the auto tour, stop in the «Founders Grove».
3. Poison oak: you will be fine, just like the rhyme says: «Leaves of three, let them be». Also, poison oak is bright red about this time of year (October).
4. Admire the Eel River and also read about the floods of 1969, 1983 and 1998. Look for the high water mark along the Avenue.

I don’t know if there’s any other place where you can see so many redwoods like here. It’s just beautiful here.
The Avenue of the Giants is actually highway 254, which is an alternate route to 101. While you can see the treetops when driving on 101, highway 254 is where all the roots are. There are pamphlets you can pick up at either end if you’re traveling by car. 32 miles of tall trees on a two lane road, tons of shade and a few towns on the way. Give yourself plenty of time to stop the car at the turnouts and take a few pictures every now and then. …Or you can hike on some of the trails.
As for restrooms, there are some every maybe 5 – 10 miles.
Even if you aren’t in good shape or too lazy to walk around, you should still check it out. I was sick and I still enjoyed the drive. It’s one of those places that you shouldn’t miss if you’re in the area.

Don’t miss this beautiful drive — I mean honestly — Just don’t. We were road tripping from north to south California and this was a must (Well, the Redwoods were a must) on our trip. This is one of the most beautiful drives with the most awesome groves to stop at along the way. It is like a playground for adults and kids. When we did the drive it was decently secluded with minimal traffic.
I am so glad we went all the way up north for this and Chico. It was well worth the drive and I am so glad I got to knock it off of my list of «Must See» things.
Found out they do a marathon along here — Which is pretty cool. If I hadn’t already run a California marathon the Avenue of the Giants would have been the marathon I did. Oh well — when I feel like repeating Cali I’ll come back here.

I am in awe of this place! The pictures do no justice to the Avenue of the Giants. You want the drive to just go on and on and on. We spent a weekend camping at the Burlington campground which is just off the 101 but after reading a couple of reviews, we decided to take the Avenue of the Giants exit and drive a little extra to get to our campground. SO glad we did! It is totally worth taking the detour (even after a 5 hour long drive). The view just immediately rejuvenates you and is sure to leave you speechless!
The tall majestic redwoods are just so amazing to look at, some of them as old as 1200 years! We did a 7 mile hike through the forest starting along the river loop trail and then following the trail leading towards the Rockefeller forest. We had bought a detailed (not really, but was our only source of direction since phones kept losing network) map and were completely relying on that. There were times when we thought we were completely lost because the bridges on the map looked nothing like the real river/​stream crossings. But we eventually found our way to the Rockefeller forest after quite an adventurous hike and we were not in the least bit disappointed. It is a gorgeous forest with perhaps the tallest Redwoods! We decided to walk back to our campsite along the Avenue of the Giants instead of braving our way back through the forest.
The park is just spectacular! Even five stars doesn’t do justice to the Avenue of the Giants!
