Unexpectedly good roadside Mexican in Iowa. Started with great chips and salsa, proceeded to do more than just scratch the Mex itch. Guacamole, mushroom quesadilla, and beans recommended.

Surprise — Surprise — driving I-80 through Iowa — lunch choice found via Unilocal.Right off Interstate. Nice little authentic Mexican place. Ordered ala carte for variety of items between 2 people. Street tacos — carbon and chorizo — very good and authentic. Pork tamale — very very good — homemade with a great chili sauce. Chili relleno stuffed with cheese — also good. Good homemade chips and solid salsa. Worth the exit and drive past a McDonalds. Also looks like they serve beer /margaritas — overheard locals ordering«the usual» so they must have loyal following. Extensive menu — amazingly affordable prices. Tamale was $ 1.90 — dinner items under $ 10.

After reading the reviews here on Unilocal,my boyfriend and I decided we HAD to eat here. We stopped in and at first we were like okay this place looks really sketchy… But usually the sketchy places are the best! So we stopped and I noticed how busy they were right away. So We didn’t get waited on for at least 10minute. I ordered a simple combination number one which came with an enchilada, taco, rice and beans he ordered combination number 8 and taco, enchilada, burrito with no rice and beans so he ordered a side of rice. The food presentation was really nice and we got it immediately. But the fist bite I took was the enchilada and it was definitely not good. My boyfriend asked what I thought and I said it’s not good. He took a bite of his and he agreed with me. Usually we always disagree when I don’t like something, so when he is on my side, there is definitely something not right! The beans were a little runny and the rice tasted a little stale. The taco I had was just meat and a couple pieces of lettuce. He said the burrito was decent but that’s the only part of the meal he enjoyed. I think maybe the cook was having an off night, based on the prior reviews. The service was okay. Again, they were packed out.

I am from Chicago and this place is Great. Got stuck with a shipper down the road, so I decided to give a shot. Walked in and was a little hesitant, boy was I wrong. Yes it stands in the middle of almost nothing, but I am from Chicago, I was more that satisfy. Flavor of the food was on point. They were missing Horchata and for that can’t give it 5 stars. Over all, it beats many places back home.

Amazing authentic Mexican food. Just passing through and decided against McDonald’s. Since I’m from Southern California I was not expecting authentic Mexican in the middle of Iowa. Man was I wrong. My toddler destroyed his quesadilla with rice and beans. I had 2 tacos de chorizo. Very authentic street tacos. I will definitely stop here again on our way back. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because they don’t have Horchata. A Mexican restaurant must.

Fantastic authentic Mexican food. Highly recommended for the local Eastern Iowa crowd or the traveller coming through via I-80(which couldn’t be more convenient). Relaxed atmosphere and good service. Chips and salsa are as good as it gets. Don’t let the façade of the hotel deter you… Just come in and you’ll feel welcome.

The staff is friendly, the food is good. We usually go with 5 other people and we never have to wait long for our food. It looks like just a motel from the outside but the restaurant is right in the door upstairs.
