La Spiaza

Good place to get a simple drip coffee and do your work. Only downside is that they close at 500 pm. Wish they stay open longer for an evening coffee.

Hmm I have mixed feelings about La Spiaza. I love the atmosphere, and it seems to be always buzzing with friendly, happy people. Friendly, happy people… that is, except for the employees. Or more particularly, a particular employee. It’s not that he’s mean exactly, just a bit surly and short on friendliness.
I like their drinks, especially iced coffee. Their sandwiches are enjoyable if you’re looking for a light lunch (not that filling for me, but maybe if I’m planning a stop for ice cream after or something).
A comparison to the coffee shop across the street and down a bit is obvious, but I won’t go there. I’m all for supporting local businesses, at least some of the time.
They have some kids toys and books in the back, which my son enjoys. They may be old and crusty, but that means we can hang out here a little longer than if there were nothing for him to explore.

Nice atmosphere. The coffee is just ok but nothing special. Really great owner and terrific service. Love the jazz station. It is a great college coffee shop. This place just needs to be cleaned up a bit and some additional business so they can make small improvements. They need great coffee though.

Super cute coffee shop that serves food, gelato, and teas. They also have a little bookshelf of books that one can buy. Usually at coffee shops, the food is average or even awful, but at La Spiaza, I was pleased that I could order a salad and that it was tasteful. They serve you with real dishes, even if you are only drinking coffee and just sitting and enjoying a good book. The setting is very comfortable and kind of reminds me of a hipster hangout. Instead of heading to the Starbucks and getting your usual, walk across the street, and check out La Spiaza, because, «friends don’t let friends drink Starbucks.»

This place is a great alternative to Starbucks.
Good coffee and good atmosphere. They have nice couches and stuff as well.
Also, it’s a great place for a first date.

I’ve seen this little mom and pop coffee shop in Wheaton, quite a few times. The first time I visited the location, I REALLY wanted a french soda (sparkling water, flavored syrup and half and half). Unfortunately, they didn’t have one lick of sparkling water in the house :(I tried a cup of iced coffee, and it was super watered down and not very good at all. I decided to try again this past weekend. This time they did have sparkling water so I was excited to have my refreshing drink after a walk around the French Market. Unfortunately, when I received my drink, it was waaaayyyy to syrupy and had no carbonation at all :(I couldn’t even finish it. Such a disappointment :(

Good spot if you’re looking for something different. Local feel. Service was prompt and the Chicago Roasters Coffee was smooth. Décor was taken from gam-gam’s house in the 1980s.

I live a good part of my life in coffee houses. I work from where ever my laptop is and don’t like to be a homebody. I was thankful during my 2-​month stay in Wheaton to find La Spiaza after the underwhelming and starchy Caribou Coffee and the ever-​present Starbucks.
La Spiaza has charm — several bookshelves with books to read or buy, gelato, eclectic artwork and furniture, interesting characters that run the place, and pretty good coffee. It has that feel like there should be open mic nights and poetry readings — but they don’t, they close at 5 p.m., even though there seems to be more people coming in during the afternoon hours than earlier in the day. The coffee is not quite up to Stumptown standards (I recently moved from Seattle/Portland…so yes, I’m a coffee snob), but it doesn’t leave that awful burnt aftertaste that Starbucks coffee has. The food isn’t amazing, but it’s not bad (don’t get the breakfast sandwich).
While La Spiaza isn’t the best coffee house I’ve been to, it certainly was more than I expected to find in downtown Wheaton, which seems overrun with boutique shops, mediocre and expensive food, and little else. It’s like an oasis of reality in a downtown of plasticity and kitsch shops…

I was JACKED to try this place after a few years ago they were featured on Men’s Healths’ website for «coffeehouse bathroom ettiquette». They quoted a worker saying, «Don’t pulverize the bathroom and leave». It’s hilarious how now they have a sign that says «RESTROOM FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY». I bet it had to do with the aforementioned bomb dropper.
Speaking of bombs, this review is not pretty. Hide your sons and daughters, because I haven’t been this disappointed in a while.
I arrived at 1:30ish for a late lunch in my home town. I was hoping for a simple breakfast sandwich (egg, bacon, avocado, cheese; all sandwiched between an English muffin. This «coffee house» has a vast array of selections from Americano to Cubana to Espresso. I knew I would get the standard decaf with my sandwich and salad when I was going to order.
It’s ironic (meaning THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU SHOULD DO) that there is a bumper sticker on the register that says «Friends don’t let friends drink Starbucks». Well, if you’re a real friend, you go get your mocha loca la ya ya at Starbucks because my service and experience were awful.
First off, the employee seemed bothered that I wanted decaf coffee… in a coffee house. He had to brew a new blend. I ordered that first and then started asking about breakfast sandwiches. I WAS DENIED (this was while my coffee was brewing).
Listen, I had some oatmeal this morning already, so I wanted to support a local business that caters to college kids, twenty somethings, and air gutair champions. I will never step foot in here again. Why?
1. No eggs
2. No bacon
3. No English muffin (ciabatta and focaccia bread only? GET THAT ISH outta here!
In my previous review, I had a pizza from here and it was okay. You’re better off getting a bagel at County Farm Bagel or Skylight Café. I have already tried both and didn’t want to do Egglectic or Egg Harbor.
I said thanks for the coffee (not really that great) paid my 1.95 (tipped 5 cent… I know, good man, right). then proceeded to walk over to Shane’s Deli for a REAL sandwich where I had more than two bread options.
I am not sure what La Spiaza translates to in Italian, Latin, or Spanish. But in my dialect/​language/​native tongue, it translates to NO WAY NEVER AGAIN!

I’ve been doing the Spaz for a long time. I like their mochas and their chais but I have always, since day one, hated their drip coffee. One time I got a free cup of it for being such a frequent customer (the original owners did this) and I was actually upset at this because I was stuck with drinking it. I do love the scones and the muffins. Ask for some butter. Napkins are often behind the counter and you have to ask for them. I find this to be pretty cheap. It’s the little things like providing napkins to your customers that count.
The cool thing about the spaz is the neighborhood feel. I’ve made friends there. Friends who I still have. because the regulars get to know each other.
I’d love to see the spaz step it up just a little bit because I want this local (possible gem) to thrive!
Personally, I’ll keep supporting them. But if you drink something. don’t do the regular coffee.

La Spiaza has the five qualities of all my favorite coffee shops.
1) Killer coffee.
2) Friendly service.
3) Eclectic, artsy atmosphere.
4) Board games.
5) Live music.

I love coffee and coffee houses, this cute little place fits right into my list of places I would love to hang out!
We were doing our Wheaton/​Cantigny day and how does a day like that always need to end? With a cup of coffee for the road of course! And that is exactly what I should have ordered but my eyes got distracted by a gelato/​coffee mix. I love gelato also but I really should have just gotten coffee. This mixture was very good, don’t get me wrong, but it was very filling and I had already treated myself earlier in the day. I am ashamed to say I didn’t finish my drink and that just makes me sad.
You know what that means don’t you? I will have to come back and get a coffee. Genius! OK, now I am good with my previous selection.

This place has really grown on me. I love the quirky mix and match furniture and unassuming style. The food items are lkmited but tasty and the coffee drinks are great. Plenty of seating for a small place. They now have gelato available and a good number of smoothies. Props for being busy despite the Starbucks across the street!

What a cute little coffee shop! Places that have miss-​matched furniture, books everywhere in random places, and that over-​all unpretentious atmosphere rate high on my list.
There’s a lived-​in feeling about this place that is comfortable and relaxing. If you’re looking for a place with nice new furniture and coordinating tables, then you probably should steer clear. Personally, I find those kind of coffee shops boring and cold. I’m definitely a fan of the antique stove they use as the extra sugar and napkin station.
The coffee I ordered was also great! Better than a lot of places I’ve had in the city. The barista was also extremely friendly and helpful (and pretty cute too). If I lived out this way, I would probably make this my regular coffee shop.

I want to like La Spiaza, it’s an independent coffee shop across from a Starbucks, which certainly counts for something. It has a bookish charm and mismatched furniture that makes me feel like I’m in an old bookstore. I think I would enjoy studying there.
Unfortunately, every time I have purchased coffee from here, it has been burnt. Severely burnt. Every time I go back hoping it will be better, I am disappointed. That’s kind of a deal breaker when you’re a coffee shop…

La Spiaza makes the third coffeehouse in Wheaton, and since losing the only coffee shop I ever really loved in Carol Stream, I knew I had to give this place a shot.
I bought a few things to go — the chocolate chip scone, a raspberry bar and a ciocolatto (actual spelling very much unknown).
The scones was pretty good, and I liked the ciocolatto, which amounts to a blended coffee and chocolate drink. The texture was perfect, as it was nice and cold but not icy. There were bits and flecks of chocolate in it, and a chocolate froth on top. As far as coffee house blended ice drinks go, this was the best I’ve ever had.
The scone was pretty good; a bit tough, but good.
The interior is comfy, and they have a good selection of board games and books. And, it’s not so far away from home!
I can’t wait to get something else from here… I think this will be my go-​to coffee shop from here on out!

Top notch coffee shop with an extensive food and drinks menu.
Free wi-​fi for customers, seasonal outdoor seating and a very clean washroom. They even have a broad selection of used, high-​quality trade paperback books for sale at very reasonable prices.

I will be the first to agree with you if you say that the suburbs don’t have enough independent coffee shops. I will admit, I frequent SBUX because it’s convenient, but if I find a good independent shop, I MUST visit. and try to revisit often.
Once again, Downtown Wheaton has surprised me. La Spiaza is a cute, rustic coffeehouse that serves up creative coffee creations, baked goods and lunch fare (sammies, wraps and salads). I love the old hardwood floor and the cozy feel with mismatched furniture and low lighting.
I had a shot of espresso poured over a scoop of hazelnut gelato. I love coffee and this espresso was flavorful and perfect with the gelato. The hubs got the Vanilla Granitalia – which was like a iced vanilla blended coffee. If I wasn’t already full from dinner and my espresso/​hazelnut, I would have finished his drink too – very refreshing.
The gal behind the counter was very friendly and patient as we decided on our drinks – the chalkboard behind the counter was full of different coffee creations and they all sounded so good! It seems like this place is popular with students as I saw a study group and some open laptops. I looked for the free wi-​fi sign but didn’t see it. I didn’t want to ask too many questions either as it was open mic night and I didn’t want to be THAT customer, you know, the one that can never shut up during poetry readings. LS is definitely worth future visits.

I was brought here against my will: my niece got her drivers license. A celebration was in order, her choice but my cash. At any rate, after we pulled up to this tiny little place in the heart of Wheaton, and after I pried my nails off the dashboard, we walked into this cute spot.
She was right at home and ordered a chocolate/​gelato drink: I hesitate to say frappucino (I think that’s poor form at La Spiaza) but I was still recovering from the drive over. But I did get a little swig of her drink and it was the type of drink if you needed a chocolate fix; you would be fixed for a while — happily so.
I went with my gold standard: classic cappuccino. The barista did a pretty good job with it. Nice meringue-​like foam, smelled great (not over steamed), but lately I’ve been religated to under par espresso no matter where I go, and sadly, it happened to me here. I would have been happy as a clam if they had hit it out of the park.
My «chauffeur» and I had a nice visit and enjoyed our time there. The place was clean, the service good, so we’ll probably stop back some time — but I’ll drive.

I enjoyed this little coffee shop when I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago. And it doesn’t hurt it’s across the street from one of my favorite shops in Wheaton, It’s Our Earth.
I gave their chai a whirl and they did not disappoint. I like my chai a bit spicy, as opposed to vanilla-​y, and they fit the bill. I saw after I had ordered they also had flavored chai suggestions… I must come back to try them all!
I also had a Raspberry White Chocolate Scone — definitely have them heat it up if you have the time. It makes all the difference.
I wish they had a few more comfy chairs to lounge in and less tables but that’s okay. They have a whole hutch full of games and books to entertain yourself and friends with while you sip your beverage and chat.
The girl behind the counter was fine… not overly chipper but not unpleasant. I also found the décor in the restroom fun — whimsical sayings and quotes have been written on the wall in permanent marker — but written nicely, not like graffiti. And not that you want to hang out in the restroom to read them all but it’s something different.
They may earn a higher star rating but I’ll save it until I’ve tried them more than once.
