I have worked in the vicinity of ol’ Snaggo, as I have come to know it for nigh on 6 years now, and have mostly avoided the allure of their smoky carb loaded delights. Except for a couple of shared chip cones with colleagues and perhaps a shaslick or two out of curiosity, I have seldom succumbed to joining the cue of drunk, swaying customers queueing endlessly for an opportunity to dangerously insert pointy sticks laden with meat cubes into their gullets. That was until last Saturday. Ravenous from a long shift, I took the recommendation of a colleague and ordered a chicken burger. 5 – 8 minutes later my burger duly arrived. Piping hot and smelling sensational. The first rule of any good burger is a good bun. You could have the most righteous fillings in the known world, but if it doesn’t have a good burger bun you haven’t gotten to first base. No concerns here. A lovely, fresh rustic style white bun simply toasted. Just the right amount of crunchy to go with the very tender chicken within. And it was a real chicken fillet. Pretty sure it was thigh too — meltingly tender, beautifully seasoned, complemented perfectly by fresh crisp iceberg lettuce and a lovely tart mayo of some quality. A fresh cooked rasher of bacon added a great level of salty goodness to a burger I would happily describe as outstanding. Chef Michael and his team should be very proud. This really is street food at its finest, and I cannot wait for my next late night shift just for an excuse to grab another burger. I give it ten out of ten snags in bags.

I’ve heard much about Snag in a Bag being a very popular spot for people especially the ones that are completely off their faces on Friday and Saturday nights. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this place even opened during the day but i guess they’re mainly catering for those who believe they can sober up faster if they eat a lot of carbs. I have walked past this joint more times I like to admit whilst I am out with friends as we venture from one bar/club to the next. From the times I’ve walked past it seems to be always packed as the place itself is very small and there isn’t much standing area inside so it meant most of their customers will be spilled out onto the street blocking the foot path almost completely. Anyway I didn’t actually try their food at their Hindley street premise but actually at Rocket Rooftop & Bar on a Friday night and their chef Michael happened to be cooking on the rooftop that night and there was my chance to try out one of their famous offerings to see what the fuss is about… and the chance to avoid having to queue up behind unruly drunks is always welcomed. From what I asked of the chef he said hot dogs and burgers were also on offer but I only wanted to try one thing I’ve heard about and that was one of their chicken or lamb shaslicks. I paid my $ 5 for my chicken shaslick to which I was asked whether I wanted it doused in garlic sauce or chili sauce to which garlic sauce was out of the option as no amount of mintychewing gum could mask garlic breath and spicy over everything. I waited about a minute or so whilst the shaslick was popped on to the grill to be cooked. For $ 5 it was quite worth the money I must say as I almost thought the skewer was going to break under the heavy weight of the grilled chicken, onion and capsicum. Both hands were required to eat this bad boy. Meat was tender and juicy, the chili sauce that it was doused in tasted like Sriracha sauce which just made it automatically ten times better. All in all I definitely would say I am a fan. It lives up to the hype people.

Quite frankly, I don’t know how the name ‘snag in a bag’ is meant to make me feel. It makes me feel sort of similar to Kanye’s lyrical genius in Beyonce’s latest hit ‘Party’, «You got the swag sausage, dripping swag goo». Which for the record makes me feel confused but impressed that someone was brave enough to show those lyrics/that shop name to the world. Anyway, I haven’t eaten anything at ‘Snag in a Bag’ except their chicken and lamb shaslicks. Nor do I intend to. Late on a Friday night you will find a man in a white chef’s coat cooking some of the best shaslicks you’ve ever had on a grill outside ‘Snag in a Bag’. There is no point trying anything else. Hands down, these are the best drunk meal I’ve ever had on Hindley St. Forget about Pizza Rev. These shaslicks are so good they have a Facebook group with 70 plus followers solely devoted to them. Lamb, capsicum, and chicken skewered and dripping in delicious garlic sauce — this is a drunk girl’s dream.
