The Blue and White Cafe

I have been going here for years. Best fish and chip shop in SA in my opinion. Great value for money and everything tastes great. You will never find something you don’t like. I totally recommend the home made Dim Sims. The staff are amazingly friendly and always love to have a chat.

The best AB in adelaide. Love the choice of original styles or adding a twist to the traditional recipe.

The ol’ Blue &White (not to be confused with the upstart Red & White a few doors away.)
Home to generations of p*ssed students, taxi drivers and other denizens of the night. And the legitimate inventors, say the management, of the infamous AB — a tasty culinary concoction so visually revolting that it can be safely viewed only through beer goggles. It is also reputed to be the only dish in the world with an ‘R’ rated taste.
The chips especially here are old school, like the boss, Tony, whose photographic memory allows him to tell you what you are about to order.
Whether a fresh, crunchy yiros, or simple fish and chips, is your heart’s desire, you will never do better than the Blue & White.

Always my favourite place for a very nice yiros, the staff are always friendly and always has a great atmosphere,
I have had many yiros’ from here and never had one complaint, only top quality meat is used and you can certainly taste the difference in meat compared to other places I’ve tried,
I find the bread is always crispy and yet soft and not soggy or tough and chewy
Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for nice grilled burgers, wraps and yiros’ etc

Get in and get yourself an AB!
This place is perfect after a night out at the archer or oxford, and has provided many many interesting memories. Its a bit of an icon, and innevitably where you are destined to end up if you spend the night at one of the two afoementioned venues

I studied abroad in Adelaide for a semester in 2009, and of all the things I miss The Blue & White is right up at the top of the list. I still think about the ABs all the time, I used to always get them with both the BBQ sauce and the hot sauce. The AB is God’s gift to the drunken university student looking for a late night meal. All the other options at the Blue and White were amazing too, and the owner Tony and his wife were so nice to us every time we came in. I miss the Blue and White so much!

Gaaah, the AB is too delicious for words.
There is, however, an interesting story behind the origin of the name «AB». Apparently, it stands for something — that I won’t mention here — that will put you so off the dish you will never touch it again (if you’re one of those people). But if you’re like me, and can put mind over matter then it won’t be a problem. Then again I’m not sure whether it’s fact or fiction.
Every time I come here, I order a medium AB with the lot, no doubt. The place has other food like yiros, kebabs, oh! Almost forgot chicken chips! I usually have them after an AB. (I eat a lot for my size).
I’ve tried the red and white café’s AB (please don’t label me a traitor) and the chips were really nice and crispy but the meat was horrible. If only I could get the Red’s chips and the Blue’s meat… Mmmm…
Also, I like the venue and the service better at the Blue and White. They’re consistently friendly and open till a ridiculous hour, which fits perfectly into the lifestyles of night dwellers.

In the bustling metropolis of Adelaide it is rare to find a place where everyone knows your name and face and will have a chat with you about your day. The Blue and White became a regular haunt for me during my college days and it was because of this that I met my main man Tony. Tony is the owner of the Blue and White and definitely one of the nicest men you will ever meet.
Although I am a little ashamed to say it, most of my early interactions with Tony involved me intoxicated and him trying to decipher exactly what it is was that I wanted after rooting around in my bag trying to find loose change to pay for it. But even since leaving college, I still frequent there often with friends or family and still receive the same personal service.
My sister and I have a similar order and he knows exactly how we like it. He knows that I like an unusual amount of tomato sauce and so doesn’t even bother to give me one of those dicky little containers and pours it straight over the top.
But it is not just me that he is so friendly too, all of his customers will receive the same treatment and a lot of them, like me, are regulars that have grown up with Tony’s hospitality. So get in and try and AB (ask him what’s in it if your not sure), try a Sarah special, or just tell him that Sarah wrote a great review about him and his legendary status among his fellow North Adelaide competitors.

In my North Adelaide days this place was like a haven after moderate to intoxicated nights drinking. The reasoning behind this is that it is the home to the AB.
For those who require the education, an AB is kebab meat mixed with chips, garlic and barbeque sauce.
Although it may look like shit, please do not underestimate the taste. This open yiros type dish is incredibly tasty and the only thing better than Maccas at 2am.
Along with The AB, The Blue and White Café also shares immense rivalry with neighbouring store, The Red and White Café. Both stores which sell the AB claim to be the original founders of the dish. Man those guys must hate each other.
Personally I think I prefer The Blue and White Café, plus they have more photographic evidence supporting that they are the original AB founders.
So if you are hangover or just really hungry, head down to The Blue and White Café and support somewhat of an Adelaide trademark.
