Otherwise known as the Athelstone Bakehouse, this place does a steady trade day in, day out. The bread is fresh, and has character, unlike so many bakeries where the difference between a continental loaf, a french loaf, and a sliced white block is purely the shape. Our favourite treat from here is a simple pack of dinner rolls, $ 1.50 for half a dozen, and they are so fresh and fluffy it’s not funny. If you put a couple of drips of water on the bun, and warm it in a low oven, you’ll get the most perfect, crisp dinner roll that you can break apart, smear with butter and have something that will leave those gorgeous rolls you get in a good restaurant for dead, too. Bags of cocktail quiches and party pies are available, scrolls, donuts, honey logs and eclairs. They do excellent Apple and Apricot turnovers, and if you ask nicely they’ll fill one for you with whipped cream for a little extra — ok, so it may not be the healthiest of treats, but boy it’s delicious. This is a bakery worth a visit — there are some small tables available so you can eat here, and they do coffee and salad rolls, too, so the ‘coffee shop’ title is valid :)
