Cosmopolitan Cafe Bondi Junction

I hadn’t gone to Cosmopolitan in years because as old-​timey and family-​owned and Italian and all those things I love as it is their coffee just doesn’t cut the mustard. However, it was early, nowhere else was open, it had been a few years, so I thought I’d give them another chance (around the 43^rd if you add up the amount of times over the last 10 years or so I’ve gone through the same inner dialogue)
I ordered a coffee and a toasted sandwich. The coffee was predictably awful. It’s like buying a coffee at the airport– I KNOW these things so why do I do them? My toasted sandwich however was aces. And to be fair given that the Cosmo IS so old school Italian maybe they do an alright coffee for other people but refuse to give a soy piccallo the love and attention it deserves. I’ll let you know how it goes on Chance 44.

This place has been here as long as I remember. Still just as dingy as it always was, and so long it seems to go on forever which is great when you just feel like hiding out with a cosy booth all to yourself. Almost feels like a seedy NY diner, except, unfortunately, it’s Bondi Junction. The staff are transient backbackery types which certainly forges an interntational flavour… and they’re sweet, fast and efficient. I’ve had a fairly big night, and I’m in need of a greasy fry up. Scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, hold the bread thanks. The waitress soon returns, «does that mean you don’t want the chips either?» Yes, the usual bacon and eggs comes complete with hot chips. If it weren’t a case of once on the lips, forever on the hips, I’d go the carbs, alas… I’m happy I didn’t. As it is the b and e is enormous, and the chips would have been a gorge fest. You get the impression this is the place for anything old school… toasted sandwiches… carrot cake… raison toast… you know — comfort café food. Chips n all.
