This little fruit and veg store(I say little, meaning floor space, not range) is FANTASTIC. The range is better than the IGA there and there are more specialised fruit and veg there, that you couldn’t get at Northbridge Woolworths. Price are pretty good– somethings were cheaper than Woolies(like the beautiful mangoes @2/$ 6) while others were a little dearer. Everything that I bought lasted well and tasted delicious. As Simon Johnson is no longer in Castlecrag, this shop stocks a huge range of SJ products, as well as gluten free, dairy free and other gourmet products. They also have fresh flowers and kid sized trolleys(!!!)

This country was built on the back of fresh produce providores and suburban fruiterers like this bad boy here. Situated right next to what used to be a Franklins, then went to Coles, and what is now an IGA, Castlecrag Fruiterers has outlasted them all. Sure, it can;t compete on price with the big boys, but it damn sure blows them out of the water on every other count: quality, freshness, variety, customer service, friendliness and the knowledge that you’re buying local which not only helps you sleep better at night but has been clinically proven to reduce rheumatism and actually cures polio. Yes, polio! Far from simply selling fine fruit, these guys do tonnes more: natural, yoghurts, fresh cereals, my favourite garlic dipping sauce and, bizarrely, Bart Simpson shaped pasta. And tonnes more, I really can’t do justice to how cathartic, exciting and welcoming it is cruising around this store with the promise of an empty shopping basket and the whole world at your feet.
