Love love this café! Love the food and the people! Daily menu was amazing! Great coffee as well!

Decent enough café. Quirky and cosy interior to sit and have a chat or people watch. The menu looked promising, but I was a bit let down with the flavours when it arrived(bland). They were incredibly busy on a Sunday morning when we visited and had to wait a long time to get our food, however the staff were attentive despite the crowds. I think it would be better to visit here when it’s not so busy and you can sit and enjoy in a bit more of a relaxed atmosphere.

Update: back at Salamanca market one year later & decided to hit the olé Retro for old times sake. It is very understaffed for the amount of people that come through on a Saturday so be prepared for a wait! Having said that the service was friendly if not particularly rushed. I orered from the specials & they happily substituted my eggs for Huon Valley mushrooms & added fetta. Delicious breakfast &BF enjoyed his bacon & eggs. When I say a long wait though I mean a full hour. The gent who served us warned us there’d be «a bit of a wait» but I think more than 30 minutes is more than«a bit». GREAT coffee!

Snooty service small coffee for the price. its a very good semblance of a Melbourne café but pretentious as heck. one should treat all customers with decency

One of the few Melbourne-style cafes in Hobart(comfy seats, posters and flyers on the wall and no chrome and plastic) with the added bonus of a great location in Salamanca place with outdoor seating on sunny days. Comes complete with good hot chocolate, and attentive but relaxed Tassie style service. I’m never hassled to leave even if I’ve only had one drink and have been there with my laptop or book for three hours during rush hour with not a single hurry-up. They even let you in early while they set up to get out of the cold! I did have a dry burger once but they replaced it with profuse apologies.

I feel sometimes that Retro Café is a bit undervalued. It’s the kind of place that has steadily existed for some time and not felt compelled to capitulate to the über trendy, gloss and shine of some of the more ‘popular’ Hobart cafes. Check it out for decent, homestyle food and coffee.

The Retro is one of the cafes in Hobart that has simply always been there. It is a great spot on the Salamanca strip with friendly staff and good food. They also leave out water for your dog if you are sitting at one of their outdoor tables. Personally I find their coffee a bit too inconsistent, but it can be quite good. Unfortunately for the Retro, Dr Coffee is virtually next door where I can find infinitely better coffee, awesome snacks and free wifi…

Great café in Salamanca Place. The food was great and the portion sizes were generous. You are able to sit outside and enjoy the coastal air. The coffee could be a tad better.
