This pub has shades of Ireland and the U.K. For me with its smell, set up and bar offerings. It’s let down by high ceilings and some standard shopping centre tables and chairs but the big open outdoors area and booths inside make up for it. With friendly service generally and decent food Finnigan’s Chin is not bad for a local pub and certainly better than most of the other offerings in the area.

Let me start off by saying that I am not much of a drinker, and wouldn’t usually review a pub, though believe that the establishment is a lot better than the existing reviews make it out to be, providing that you have the right expectations when visiting a pub. I have visited Finnigan’s Chin numerous times over the past 3 years, and find the atmosphere to be pretty down to earth, the staff to be friendly and the food and drinks to be of a reasonable price and quality. Don’t visit expecting really trendy pub food, though if you enjoy a good steak, Chicken Schnitzel or Bangers and Mash along with a drink, then you should leave feeling satisfied. Finnigan’s Chin often does raffles around dinner time, giving you the chance to win a meat tray or a drink voucher, which can be a bit of fun. There is plenty of free parking around the establishment.

If I was a middle-aged trucker whose wife just up and left me one day, I’d probably spend the subsequent years drowning my sorrows here. Or imagine a movie where such a character visits that stereotypical sort of place, and there you have Finnigan’s. The food is okay for pub food. I ordered the steak(medium rare). They got the medium-rare part right and the serving was huge, but it wasn’t exactly the best cut of meat. Strangely, the garden side salad(not usually tempting to me) was pretty good and I ate the whole thing. The clientele are very bogan by day and part-bogan by night. There are a lot of locals who come here regularly to get drunk and sing karaōke throughout the week. If you’re female and walking by(or rather through — you can’t pass by it except by walking through the outdoor eating area) expect wolf whistles, leers, and comments. This happens often during the day when the place is less busy, because for some reason guys like this like to operate so you can see them if you turn around. Inside it’s very dim with very dark wood furnishings, supposedly reminiscent of an Irish pub.(I wonder what an Irishman would say.) Some of the carvings are impressive and the toilets, though also dimly lit, are cleaner than you’d expect. But there is more to life than toilets. Some of the time in any case.

Don’t let the outward appearance fool you… when you get past the derro looking people that are sitting there eating around lunchtimes, you enter a very dark pub. Lighting is definetely not their forte, nor is the service. It’s pretty much order at the counter and pay at the counter then they bring it out to you. It’s a strange set up, but i’ve never been to a traditional irish pub before, so I guess the pictures on the ceiling are there for a reason. They may need a touch up or the place may need to undergo some reburbishment in the near future, being so dark inside, is just not normal. I ordered the $ 14.95 Braised beef & Guinness pie mash & pastry… the pastry was really yummy. The actual pie looked like vomit. Not kidding. Tasted okay, but maybe they could improve on the plating side of things(go Masterchef). My husband ordered the $ 21.95300g Rump Steak… which I thought a bit much for a rump and the 300g wasn’t all that much. The steak fries weren’t that crispy, the gravy watery… what can I say. We’ve had better. It’s alright for pub food if you’re hungry and I think other places have spoilt me by choice. Not really for me though with my 2 kids and the smoke from the smokers outside blowing right towards our table… not a big fan.

Finnigan’s Chin is another one of those Irish bars that have all the stereotypical clichés like the darken wood floors, dimply it room and musty beer smell to it but there’s nothing that makes it any different than the multitude of «UK» bars in Brisbane. I went there for a cheap feed with my wife one night and we both decided to get the chicken schnitzel that was a bargain for fewer than ten dollars. A couple of drinks and thirty minutes later our plates were served. The schnitzel was of a pretty standard size, the standard of what you would buy at Woolies. The salad was freshish and was heavily coated in a vinegarette. The chips were on the soggy side of crisp and I suspect had been in the hot bin for a while. I’ll be honest. If I come back, I wont be ordering the same meal because I know I could have prepared the same thing better and in less time at home.
