RMIT University

The facilities have certainly improved since I did my undergraduate.
RMIT is easily accessible by PT, wlaking, riding and driving and relatively easy to navigate your way around too.

I studied Master of Computer Science at RMIT University. Let me rephrase that — I obtain a Masters Degree from RMIT University without actually learning much. They taught zilch and I learnt what little I could from self-​study. I would not recommend this University to anybody. Their biggest advertising point is that they are in the city and there is no wall bound campus and you are in the midst of all activity etc but trust me, you will learn to hate exactly that once you’re at the University. If you enrol in a Masters degree, surely you are hoping to get something out of it.
The lecturers were at best ‘below average’ in their teaching skills and some were quite useless. I didn’t understand a word of what one of the lecturers said in class (their English was barely passable) and then there was another — Audrey Tam who used to read from handouts in the lecture hall! Once I asked a question and she told me to find the answer and tell her in the next lecture. it will give me ‘something to do’. What a retard!
The course coordinator was probably not so bad but it was extremely hard to get appointments with her and the long wait times would mean you end up finding a workaround. The structure of all the degrees offered at the School of Computer Science and Information Technology was pathetic. The lecture notes did not provide any real direction on how to prepare for assignments or exams. The tutorials were a mix of good and bad dependign upon how helpful the tutors were. Mainly the tutors who has previously been RMIT students were somewhat better than others.
In the last semester, we had a ‘project’ which was an utter waste of time and money. RMIT makes a lot of money fom those — students pay fees for 4 subjects and the university doesn’t need to provide much in terms of lecture halls, labs, lecturers etc and students learn absolutely nothing. I don’t get how it is part of a full fee paying Masters Degree.
If you can, choose a different university — Monash, Swinburn, Deakin, UniMelb, Vic Uni etc. But not RMIT. That’s my recommendation.

What a shit storm. RMIT is a substandard university. In fact, I’m not even sure that it is a university. They’ll probably want to sue me for slander, now. Like another reviewer, mentioned, they’re money hungry, so I wouldn’t put it past them. The only good things about RMIT, are, the student rights, officers, and trust me, they need to be, and the Disability Liaison Unit. The university will deflect responsibility for their incompetence, time and time again. The lecturers, for the most part, are uninspired, and uninspiring. One of the psych subjects I took, we pretty much had to run ourselves, with these ridiculous ‘lectures’, or podules (this was supposed to be delivered face-​to-​face, and that’s certainly what was charged for), as they were called, going up on line as a result of any course material students were struggling to grasp, individually, while tutes were just groups of students sitting around having a yak, while the tutor was magically able to be in all places at once, assessing our understanding of the material (yes, this was graded). It’s called ‘interteaching’. Run for the hills, if you ever hear this term. Tutes are overcrowded and typically taught by people who have less of a grasp on the subject than many of the students. There’s no space for genuine enquiry — just stick to the script, tick the boxes, get them in and get them out. Whatever you do, stay away from the social work faculty. What a bunch of inept, hypocritical, bureaucratic, self-​serving, nitwits — essentially, the antithesis of good social work practice. Bunch of useless hippies. This is all topped of by the university’s refusal to fly the indigenous Australian flag, permanently, alongside the other piece of shite.

I can safely say that after 9 months here in Melbourne, I couldn’t be happier to have been given the opportunity to come study at RMIT. Though I don’t know much in regards to politics of the university, nor do I care. I feel as though the in-​city campus allows students to have the ‘university’ feel with the luxury of all the cities amenities.
My course requires me to move about the city all day long. I have courses on Cardigan street and others all the way on Bourke street at the Business Building.
The layout of the campus allows you to walk into a building on Swanston street, walk up a few stairs and walk out the other side of the building into our equivalent of a university mall. My favorite area is definitely this secret street that many have never ventured to. This secret street I talk about is, Bowen Street.
Bowen Street is filled with a mix of university buildings, grassy patches to relax, a basketball court, the cultural center and at the bottom close towards exiting the campus near La Trobe Street is the restaurant, café — Pearson and Murphys.
As an international student on exchange, I’ve found Kate Rintoul from the study abroad office to be very helpful. She has been there for me through it all, even when I forgot to extend my visa and was deported for a short time between semester 2, 2011 and Semester 1, 2012.
All in all, I’m a big fan of uni life in the city !!

RMIT was the most unorganised, money-​hungry university I’ve ever been to. Well, to be fair, my course and its faculty was. For half of my final year we had no lecture for one of the subjects. My course was pathetic and repetitive. Guest speakers often didn’t show up, and one of the major exams was a total farce. Students openly, and loudly, asked each other for the answers and the lecturer did nothing about it. Have other students in other course had better experiences? Yeah, probably. RMIT is a big uni with various campuses, and for me and my experiences, RMIT was a total disappointment.

Yeah so you wanna know about bureaucracy huh? Well, let me tell you.
RMIT used to be a technical college or TAFE and ever since its adoption of this whole ‘university’ thing it’s just become fuckin’ impossible.
I studied here for a few years and was never let down by how a simple thing could be turned into a major fucking problem by RMIT. They seem to pride themselves on an administrative infrastructural quagmire that defies logic in every way possible.
I was lucky, I studied a course taught by (largely) dedicated staff, full of adult students that didn’t take shit lying down. I’ve heard stories, though, of international students being treated like shit and taken for a ride, and the fee structure has just changed meaning many people will pay a lot more for the same product.
I ain’t all bad, but I would seriously, given the opportunity again, consider taking my money elsewhere. Be warned, it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be…

RMIT is highly regarded as one of Melbourne’s top universities. As it well should be.
I’ve personally worked with the university and have experienced their high class and professional service they provide young people. They have a great way about grooming their students into becoming an integral part of their chosen industry.
I have constantly been impressed at the quality of some of their students artworks, films and events they hold throughout the year where I’m sure that people must think they are already professionals.
RMIT also hold the biggest graduation in the southern hemisphere with everyone graduating at the same time at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. It’s a massive event, which really shows how much they, as an organisation, care for the successes of their students.
