One of the best fish burgers I’ve ever had. Don’t eat meat so can’t comment there. And the super friendly guy who served us even had tips about what was going on that day(last Sunday). Live locally and been going there occasionally for a while. would recommend for sure

Often do large lunch orders for work and they get it right every time. The crew are really friendly and have your order ready on time. Food is fantastic and great value. Highly recommended the Old Salt Burger…

Pity the fish was not fresh & the grilled fish was too oily.

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had! Tried the house fish and chips(with salad) and the other reviews were right about thin crunchy batter and fresh fish. Also came with a lovely garden salad(not like the usual soggy iceberg and soft tomatoes you normally get with your fish and chips. I finished the whole plate and didn’t have to pick off any batter to find the fish. ‘Twas well priced at $ 12.00 too. Got free tartare too, a little bonus worth mentioning.

I’m going with a shiny 5 star rating for Old Salt. Not because it blew me away, but because it’s just hands down my favourite Fish & Chip shop. Despite their cool logo and bright yellow bar stools, this place doesn’t feel hipster at all, nor does it charge through the nose. Certainly cleaner and nicer than most locals, but it’s still 100% a classic fish & chippery that makes you happy in the nostalgic way. Like spending under $ 20 on a meal for two — that doesn’t happen to me too much these days! Their grilled fish wins it for me. Nice crunchy crumb and always well cooked and moist on the inside. Chips are great and having potato cakes thrown into the 2-person pack makes me feel like a kid again, back when we used to get them for free from our friendly local. This place is located at the North Port end, so not beachside, but take the opportunity for a short stroll to go enjoy them at Pickles St Beach. On busy nights like hot days or Friday nights, this place PUMPS with locals. Expect a good 30 min+ wait if you just rock in. I’d definitely recommend calling ahead or place your order before going for a walk.

Got the kids a plain burger and chips, now normally I don’t like my burger bun toasted as it dries the bun out, but for once it was not. Kids loved it and we all shared the chips, very good, crunchy, not tasting of other deep fried food(fish, like other stores). We will try again just to see if it was a one off thing or not.

Okay — I am officially addicted. I have been here about 4 weeks in a row. It is our post-yoga addiction. By about the last few stretches all we can think about is our fish souvlaki sandwich. Also, I want to note that the staff is unbelievably friendly, remembers people’s names, welcomes you, serves you with a smile, is proud of their business and makes the experience even better. I want to try everything on their menu.

What I look for in a good fish and chip shop are a couple of ‘Old Salts’ manning the stove, good batter, great chips and potato cakes. Oh and a big jar of pickled onions. And happily this cute little place is a meeting of young and old, complete with good grub. You’ll find the seasoned old boys manning the fryer and grill, while the young buck lands the customer orders. It’s just opened but Old Salt is already a refuge for Port Melbourne locals wanting to avoid the seaside-skyscraper-bachelor-pad crowd of footballers, tandoori coloured plastic WAGs, seagulls and suburban tourists shouting at each other over throbbing dance music at the nearby chippies closer to the water. Old Salt’s menu is small just like the venue, but it’s honest and traditional, like a nostalgic throw-back to old-skool Port Melbourne. The servings are decent sizes — the minimum order of chips is big enough to keep a bunch of nippers happy after school. And you know what? I reckon these chips are too good to share with seagulls. Did I say cute? Yeah, the refit is kinda special. Love the old bottle crates housing condiments and the builder-chic light fittings. Take a seat under a tree on the pavement or at the counter while waiting for your order in peace. I wonder, should I be telling you this? Or perhaps I should really keep it as my own little secret? OK. Keep it under your hat, I don’t want to trip over any chip-crazy birds on my way in.
