Why anyone goes to this ridiculous chain resturant is beyond me. If you want good food why go to a chain? Clearly I made this mistake once & question myself as to why. Bad everything.

These guys were great. Just ordered a bunch of coffees and on the way out some lunatic almost cleaned me up crossing the street sending hot coffees everywhere. They had pity and insisted on remaking all the coffees free of charge even though I was well on my way when this all happened. Coffees were great as was the toasted ham&cheese sandwich. I realize this isn’t an in-depth review of their meals, but I have to give kudos to incredible service. They managed to turn a Hot-coffees-all-over-my-crotch Day into a much more positive one. Thanks guys.

The first time I went here as a group of 10 several years ago we walked out after waiting over an hour for our food with no explanation. Recently I went again with a different group. Disaster? No, but far from good — and it’s all the little things. Inconsistent service, couple of clearly incorrect drinks(‘Here’s your soda lime and bitters’ when it clearly has no bitters in it), undercooked potato ‘nuggets’, someone being asked to move their chair forward ‘So people can get by’ when clearly no one had tried, would try and indeed didn’t, pizza where the topping only covered three quarters of the base… You get the drift. If I could give them any recommendation it would be to focus of staff training and quality control in the kitchen — that and spend a night or two checking out the far superior choices pretty much next door to them. That is the only difference between this one star and a far greater rating. So in a word — you can do better.

I don’t know if I can put my finger on why it is that I am not the biggest fan of the Groove Train. Maybe it is because it is trying to be a groove chain. One of the things that makes Melbourne great is the lack of American style chain stores. I am not comparing the Grove Train to American chains in the sense that they are poor quality but that it is a franchise that is obviously a franchise. Perhaps if they were all a little different and didn’t have the same branding then I might like them but I don’t find myself wanting to come here very often even though they are quite groovy inside and the food is good.

Groove Train is a café that I frequented when I had no idea what a good café was. It’s not a bad place, it’s just a little bit lost or something. Does it want to be an Italian restaurant? Does it want to be a fast food joint? Or does it really want to be a café? I’m not too sure. This attempting to be everything for everybody is where the place falls down. They aren’t coffee focused enough to really battle with some better cafes on the same street, their food isn’t good enough to combat with many of the restaurants in the area and the plastic feel of the place makes it just a weird place to hang out — it feels like there’s nastiness in the air. That’s not to say anything they do is bad, it’s actually pretty good, but it feels a bit pre packaged for your convenience or something. Know what I mean?

There are a couple of Groove Train locations in Melbourne but I spend most of my time at the Bridge Road venue. There is something about the setting of this particular restaurant that really compliments the easy going and fun atmosphere of Bridge Road. Groove Train is an all-rounder; it crosses over between breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a few different ‘modern’ cuisines. Dips, pastas, parmas, focaccias, and fry-ups can all be found inside. Like most other all-rounders Groove Train may not have the quality but the quantity is certainly correct. The service can be a little slow and while the wait staff always seem cheerful and friendly, they aren’t very efficient — this can be a problem when it gets busy. Groove Train is a great place to stop off for a quick meal or coffee in the morning — especially if you are looking for large serves. If you are after quality then consider moving higher up Bridge Road.
