In 1995 Cibo Matto released an album within which was the infamous song, «Know your Chicken» Armed with that tune in my head, I walked into this tiny shop. The watering mouth bumped into dry poultry and mealy fries. For $ 10 you get your ¼ chicken plus the aforementioned mealy fries. Not the worst deal, but certainly not the best chicken out there. Only takeaway. Fast service, funky locale, Cibo Matto playing, A-OK experience.

A chook, salad and small chips is my go too weekday cheat card and I’m currently on the hunt for the holy trinity in Adelaide. Perfectly seasoned, moist chicken with large crunchy chips and a selection of non mayo-soaked salads to choose from. Funky chicken serves up good birds but our 7:30pm visit here meant we caught one that was a bit dry. The chips are heavenly golden and big cut, as was previously mentioned. The salads are the winner here with beetroot and fetta, pumpkin and spinach, tabouli, greek and plenty more to choose from — again though get in early to get the pick of the crop and not left overs. Service was super quick and friendly and the price was good for a chicken shop. Overall, not the holy grail but definitely a contender should some of my other regulars be out on one of my fat wreck Friday type days.

How funky is your chicken, how funky is your chicken, how loose is your goose, our goose is totally loose. Call me spoiled but when I head to a chicken place I want a large selection on my menu board. Just in case I’m in a picky mood. Unfortunately Funky Chicken seems a tad scrimped on selection options. Does this mean what they do do, they do really well? Judging by other reviews, probably. But I need options and I will stand for nothing else. The chickens do look amazing though.

There is the odd chook shop that is worth traveling a little bit farther to grab your nights feed. I am not talking a 20 minute detour or anything like that, but maybe going an extra km or 2. One that I have already reviewed is the best, being Chicken Chef on Main North Road, however Funky Chicken on Duth Street isn’t too far behind. The chicken is fine and all, it defeinately passes the ‘skin’ test… but the one thing that sets the big boys apart from the pretenders is the chippies. Elissa and Penny are right on the money, Funky Chicken has some mental chips! That is all you need to know, get on em!

Funky Chicken is clucking good! Seriously. This is my sister’s local chicken shop, which makes not having cooked dinner such a bad thing afterall. Firstly, the premise is clean. Good sign! Secondly, the chickens are fresh and golden. Thirdly, the chips(this one is big with me) are absolutely delicious. Crispy on the outside, and then nice and fluffy on the inside. Mmmm. If Malvern is your local or could be your local, and you’re on the hunt for the perfect chicken shop, then look no further. Funky Chicken is your saviour, and worth crossing the road for. I like it.

«I had Funky Chicken last night» how messed up does that sound, what a great gimmick but honestly off putting. Now I can’t actually comment on whether the chicken is funky or not, but I can tell you that the chips are crispy and golden and melt in your mouth as though they’ve simply deep fried mashed potato. It’s pretty damn good and the place is clean.
