I have had pastries and bread from Sonoma and really enjoyed it, so I was pretty excited to come here for lunch one afternoon. Sadly, their food menu needs improvement. Although Sonoma has done well to create a good vibe, the meals we ordered fell short off the mark. The biggest disappointment was the baked eggs with chorizo, it was very dry and peeled off the edges in clumps. The chorizo itself was also overcooked and rather chewy. However, credit to their smoked salmon toast. It was leagues above the baked eggs.

Love their sourdough. I find myself buying a loaf whenever I’m in the area. However, their coffee is a little lacking. Not sure if it’s their beans or their baristas. It’s just OK — which just doesn’t cut it given the competition in the area. Love the ambiance, the street/area and as mentioned, their bread. They just need to up their game with their coffee.

Great place to catch up, if you go on a sat arvo they will give you a discount on the loaves which is good value. Good for toast the next day.

I love this place. Perfect way to start the day with great coffee and their delicious muesli. It is so good I can easily forgive the lack of space(especially during the morning rush) and the not so comfy seating. I never go to Sydney without visiting here!

When did bread become the greatest thing since sliced bread? No longer is the choice white or brown — making a bread purchase is like an important life decision — you don’t want to mess it up! What if you go for the linseed instead of the olive — it could all end terribly… Having spent some time in Italy, the one thing I’ve learnt is to not distract the bread with all your flavours like butter or jam… so if you want to appreciate Sonoma goodness may I suggest enjoying it plain or perhaps dipping it into some Olive oil??? The bread choice here is fantastic and their baked good absolutely excellent and yes a loaf can cost you $ 7 — but it really is an outstanding bread. Definitely worthy of a slice or two…

Sonoma bread seems to be everywhere — farmers markets, cafes, restaurants — I’d never known a bread to be so widely advertised since moving to Sydney. So when I saw the café in Waterloo I was intrigued to find out if they did other stuff well. The important stuff first. Coffee. Dum Dum. Unfortunately my mocha was super bitter, possibly over done and burnt. Most of the time a the chocolate hides this this flavour sensation but not this time. The Danish however was perfectly cooked and scrumptious. Of course you can buy their loaves here too — everything from the Kamut to the Spelt Maple and Almond and Muesli loaf. The also do fruit salads, yoghurt muesli cups quiche, salads(free range chicken and avocado for $ 10 is good) and hearty filled rolls. The café is ok. Seats aren’t too comfy but I like the high ceiling and large window with stool and bench space. Toilets — need a keep and it’s down the street and up the corridor. Outdoor seating. No high chairs.

Whenever you think of a warm sourdough loaf, a thick rye or even some rolled oats with fruit and honey, you’ll make your way to Sonoma. It’s the bakery that has developed reputations with some of the leading café’s in Sydney, so when you’re getting your hole some sandwiches or rainy day melts — they’ll most likely be using Sonoma bread. The coffee is great here, it’s a strong hit with beautiful texture, and somewhat bitter aftertaste. They use a single origin blend which you can’t go wrong with. The polite service is more than you’ll get at your usually bakery, as this is like 2.0, with all the mod-coms. like to think of this as a new wave of café/bakery and I’m sure soon to be bar — why not, it’s just a cheap license and some more staff. I’ll go! Hint, hint Sonoma bar.

I really like this area. The gentrified industrial area of Waterloo has a number of places my partner and I love to frequent, mostly for the food(Danks St. Depot, The French House or Societe), but when it comes to coffee, you can always count on Sonoma. The coffee is great(a special Sonoma single origin blend) and the smashed egg Panini for breakfast is pretty delicious. You can’t forget the bread. I like brown bread and the spelt, whole wheat miche and wholemeal spelt are all divine. The café isn’t very big and can get busy on the weekends, but I can usually find a couple of seats, settle in and get my reading material ready before my coffee arrives. Its a comforting feeling from a trusted friend.

Sonoma sourdough is the reason I’ll never consider an Atkins diet. I defy anyone planning on giving up carbs to stroll into Sonoma and sample some breads. Or there’s the muesli. Don’t even get me started on the muesli. But carbs aside, my first visit to the Waterloo café actually came from a desperate need for a caffeine fix. In fact I was looking to score a kilo of coffee beans — the Single Origin blend that is my current obsession. So once my supply had been assured, my eyes went straight for the sourdough. Oh, hello. Yes, you may go to Sonoma for your coffee fix, but you’ll wind up digging into the scrumptious sandwiches, or simply the sourdough with an array of toppings. Sometimes it’s about the simple pleasures.
