Hailed as the«jewel» of Whiteman park, Mussel pool is a HUGE dam. Originally it was much smaller but the previous owner of the land: «Lew Whiteman» excavated the site to engorge the area and make it the«lake» that it is today. I know it’s referred to as a lake but to me it just looks like a large muddy dam, like the ones I used to run passed in Mount Majura(Canberra.)There are some beautiful photographs of Lew and his wife in canoes in Mussel pool and this area was the first section of the park that was landscaped making it picnic friendly and then opened up to the public. While I can’t imagine swimming in the water it is beautiful to look at and the wildlife and ecosystems it sustains makes it an invaluable addition to Whiteman park. Beyond a jewel and more of the heart of the park.
