Even though it seems like it’s a chain I really dug this place. They popped a newspaper-ish type flyer into our mailbox with lunch specials on it so went to try it out. Between 11:00am — 4:30pm you can get a burger + chips for $ 10, and also a piece of fish + chips + salad for $ 10. We got both and they were both really good. It’s a fast foody type joint but feels a little less so than normal. I’d return for a beer + burger etc no question. :)

Seriously delicious, fresh and healthy. We ordered the seafood for two which I must say was huge. The fish was light and so was the batter. I can’t rave on enough about the huge salad that accompanied the dish. Great venue for people who eat gluten free too.

I have to say that their«box for one» with side chips is as good as fish and chips can be. It is a combination of one house fish and 6 calamari with a huge amount of carefully thick hand cut chips. There are also a range of healthier options including salads or rice and Asian greens. The seafood is not frozen neither is their chips which is freshly and carefully cut in thick sizes and of course perfectly cooked. Also be prepared to pay $$$$ for fish and chips as this is not your usual fish and chips shop. For me though I don’t really have any regrets because I went in a hungry beast and was totally hooked with the amazing food.

GREAT fish & chips — best I’ve had in years, and you’d never know they were gluten free. Amen!!!(Salmon was really expensive so that’s why it’s 4 instead of 5 stars — no one should have to pay $ 18 for lunch, sorry)

Really is one of the best places to eat. Their grilled fish, brown rice and Asian greens is seriously tasty, healthy and only $ 12.95! Great location too. Hard to fault this place.

One of my initial concerns moving to Melbourne from Hobart was where I would enjoy great seafood like I would have previously in Hobart. Fortunately I came across Hooked and all my worries are no more. You know somewhere is great when you offer to take your mum anywhere for dinner in Melbourne and she settles for one place time and time again. Hooked has great food that caters for those that want a bit of grease but also those something a little more on the healthy side with their delicious grilled fish. Avoid Hunky Dory further up the street and make your first stop Hooked with their box for one and the tartare dipping sauce. You won’t be disappointed.

Best fish and chips in Melbourne Must try the plate for two, the salad with the pickled ginger and sweet potato crisps, it’s one of the freshest, interesting salad you can have with fish and chips

What I usually hate about fish and chips is that everything is deep fried and leaves you with a mouth like an oil drum. But Hooked somehow makes fish and chips fancy, fresh and delicious with their battered fish and thick cut chips. Yes it is a little pricey but the portions are generous and, well, there’s no other way to say it — the best fish and chips in Melbourne. Quite a nice casual dining area if you choose to eat in too.

We stopped here with the intention of a quick and healthy lunch and after perusing the incredible menu, my friend and I ordered the tuna niscoise salad. Honestly, it was probably one of the greatest I’ve ever eaten. All the produce was fresh, the ingredients were real and the yellow fin tuna steak was cooked to perfection(slightly rare in the middle). The food here is very, very high quality. The service was also lovely, and prompt. For the quality food, expect to pay a very high price. In my opinion, it is slightly over priced by a couple of dollars on each menu item and it deters me from visiting Hooked often. For that reason, I have reviewed Hooked at 3 stars only.

Great quality, but too highly priced for a fish and chip shop.

Let me start with this: I work in the area. That means that when it comes to take-away dinners, I know exactly where I want to go — and it’s always Hooked. Hooked is absolutely perfect for takeaway food. It’s light, it’s mostly healthy, great portions, lots of choices, you can add chips to make it a just a little naughty, and now you can have beer and wine on premises. Some people seem to go there for dinner, which is cool, but don’t expect a restaurant. This place has a very relaxed, casual, and nautical vibe so wear your striped t-shirts and sailors’ hats to come down and get the catch of the day. I leave you with this: I don’t mean to start any turf wars, but this is the original Hooked so by default it is better. Take that, Fitzroyalty.

I swear, I just started salivating when I clicked on ‘Hooked’ to write a review. Anyhoo… the day I found out I couldn’t eat gluten, all I could think of was all the awesome things I could no longer gobble down. Things like pork buns, burgers, pizza, spaghetti, fresh sourdough, hot pies, bagels, ramen, crumpets, battered fish… you get the idea. As anyone who’s ever been on any sort of diet will attest, as soon as you can’t have something EVERAGAIN it’s pretty impressive how badly you want it. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you’re sufficiently motivated though, and several years later, I’ve found pretty good gluten-free options(some even better than the original) for most things on that list. (Side note: if anyone knows of a gluten-free pork bun though, I’ll be your best friend.) Hooked, as it turns out, does a seriously mean gluten-free tempura battered fish. I don’t even really eat seafood and that stuff is still outrageously good. Better yet, they give you the option of having your fish with chips or salad, so you can take someone else, order the salad, convince yourself it’s healthy and pinch a bunch of chips from their plate. How do you spell ‘Homer drool’?
