I’m surprised this store has kept it’s large size since the recent restructuring and closing of many of it’s stores. I’ve been coming here for as long as I remember and even though the digital age has found me downloading a few albums here and there, I still like to own a physical copy of my music. HMV has the selection to fill my musical needs, plus the frills of useless/quirky products that you can’t necessarily find elsewhere.

I have been coming here since I was 12 and although the music market has seen better days places like hmv still have relevance for me. I often am moderately impressed by the selection. The same holds true for their collection of DVDs and blue rays. Back in the day this was one of my favorite places to come and pick up new releases or just glide over the sections and pick something random. As we all know the days of physical copies are sadly dying away and music is becoming more and more worthless and disposable. I like the deals For CDs and DVDs like 2 for 25 or 2 for 20. They often have some albums or movies which satisfy my hard earned dollar. My only hope is that music stores like Hmv don’t go the way of the dinosaur and that physical copies of music will always hold relevance.

It’s a hard life being a music fan, especially one who prefers the physical feel of a hard plastic disc or — even better — supple vinyl crackling to life. In an age where the corporations have won and small record stores are mostly fringe locations with fringe prices, stepping into the faceless maze of HMV is a battle of wills: to sell out, or not sell out. If I get this record for three dollars less than I could at a small record store, am I just a cog in the machine? Of course I am! Dollars and cents are important in this day and age, and of course a boy has to count his pennies to go the furthest they can go. Although I might sleep better at night knowing that I am supporting music at its basest level and keeping small record stores in business, there is a convenience factor in having a fairly decent selection of vinyl close by my place for a marginally better price. This is why Southcentre’s HMV wins the race of Calgary HMVs by a nose: they have a clearly defined vinyl section with a good selection, and a decent price. Chinook’s HMV is close to my work(in other words, I visit nearly every day), and it is bigger by far, but the franchise in general is interchangable, so the vinyl in Southcentre makes it a winner. Welcome to the machine!

Since the whole download era music stores in particular the Indie music stores have took a downward turn, so finding a Music store near by is pretty hard these days, I’d prefer to support an Indie store to the obvious well known high street chains, but alas they are a diminishing sight so H.M.V. it is. Shopped with this chain pretty much solid through the years, so I know I can get what I want and if not I can order it without too much hassle. This is the closest to me and does the job, everything you would expect not as big as Chinook Mall’s one but still got most of everything, games, music, dvd’s, books, mag’s, posters etc. Its located upstairs in the South Centre Mall, I’m not sure what area, as I am on auto pilot in Malls hate the places if I go in I know where I’m going, in out thank you goodbye lol but the Mall isn’t that big any ways so its pretty easy to find. If its music you want then H.M.V. has most of the main stream styles, I’d prefer an Indie store but this is better than nothing!
