Very good chinese bakery. It is inside the Landmark mall on the corner of centre st and 16 ave nw. It is closed on wednesdays. It accepts cash only and the nearest atm is in the mall but charges a hefty fee and is inside a store which is not always open same hours as the bakery. i really enjoy the coconut buns but they sell out fast. I try to arrive within 1 hr of opening to make sure i get some. Plus the custard buns are a close 2nd if coconut is sold out. Ive had many other items here and for about a dollar each its fun to try new things. The first time i went there i was confused how to get my buns but there are cafeteria trays sitting on a shelf under the baked goods and tongs and you place your items directly on the tray then bring them to the till where the employee packages them. To be honest its not the most sanitary way. But it hasnt stopped me going there.

In the Lambda Mall, there’s this tiny little Chinese bakery nestled next to the Supermarket and across from Sun’s BBQ Restaurant. It’s probably also one of Calgary’s hidden gems. The Maxima Bakery is a family owned and operated operation that churns out hundreds of popular Chinese buns of all sorts and flavours. Inexpensive, tasty, filling and more, I try to stop by here for a ½ dozen, and especially whenever there’s a dragon boat festival! Whether it be filled with BBQ pork, mushroom and chicken, hot dogs, coconut, lemon paste, red bean or god knows how many other fillings to cater to the tastes of the clientele from 5 to 105, they have a pretty loyal following for a place that doesn’t seem to promote itself in anyway whatsoever. Although they’re open from 10 to 5, the best time to go is usually between 11 and 3, which is when all of the offerings are available, and at their freshest. It’s also pretty darn cheap, with the most expensive bun at $ 1.20(the pork or the chicken filled buns), which literally makes a pretty nice simple meal for under $ 2.50 possible. Oh, and for congee lovers, they’re probably the only ones I know who make the fried dough sticks in abundance for take home whenever you want. They’re fresh, yummy and a great snack on their own. I just wish they would drain the oil a little better since I usually have to pat them down a little with a paper towel. They’re cash only, so remember to bring some dough. But then, for under $ 7 for 6 buns with no GST, it’s a place I love to go to as often as possible. #49 of Unilocal’s 30-Day Review Challenge
