Peasant Cheese Shop

Heads up everyone: you do not have to come here only for cheese, they will make you a sandwich!
Peasant doesn’t advertise a lunch menu so I’m not sure how my friends found out about this. For all I know they wander into every Kensington business and say, «make me a sandwich!» and see who takes them up on it. In any case, you can go into Peasant and ask them to make you a sandwich and they will. And it will be delicious. Tell them exactly what you would like, or better yet, tell them you trust their judgement and they will throw together something wonderful for you. I can’t remember exactly how much it was, maybe $ 8-​$ 10 which I would say is competitive with other businesses in the area, including Peppino’s across the street. As of yet I have had a few Peasant Cheese Shop sandwiches but never actually bought their cheese itself. Ha! What a great addition to Kensington!

Staff is friendly, knowledgable, and welcoming. They make beautiful «boards» filled with meat and cheese and olives etc. with funky little name tags for all of the goodies. The food is delicious and the service top notch. We have always been thrilled!

I’m a big fan of this place!
Having lived in Montréal for five years, I am accustomed to a lot of fine cheese shops. Calgary has an extremely sparse selection. So when Peasant Cheese opened up in my ‘hood, I was stoked.
The first time I randomly walked in there to check it out, I was super impressed. I was ooh-​ing and ahh-​ing over all the cheese, and the staff was so friendly they even offered to let me try a bit. They shaved off two fine slices of a store favourite — a goat cheese from Spain called Guaraxa — and handed them to me and my friend. DELICIOUS! I promptly bought a small portion of it to take home while the guy at the store chatted with us about the cheese they import. All great quality, mostly from Europe, especially Spain.
Peasant Cheese has all kinds of unique cheeses at a reasonable price, and it’s a real treat walking in there. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and offer suggestions when you ask for it. They even have a ton of condiments that they will gladly pair with the type of cheese you’re buying.
This weekend, do this: go to Peasant Cheese one evening, pick up a cheese, ask them to match a condiment with it for you, then hop on over next door to Kensington Wine market for a bottle that will complement your cheese (When in doubt, ask.) Take your goods home, lay it out all pretty and bask in the feeling of grown-​up indulgence that only good quality wine and AMAZING cheese can provide.

Wow! Very impressed with this wonderful cheese shop in Calgary. As I walked in I felt like I was back in Paris. The fresh bread and the many different types of cheese made my heart sing. There were tons of different charcuteries and other snacks and jellies you could purchase. I headed straight for the cheese. The staff here are extremely helpful and knowledgeable with all the different types of cheese! I was so happy with my picks and for the price I paid I would say I definitely received a healthy amount of delicious cheese! This place makes the grocery store look bad. We enjoyed our cheese on a quiet evening at home and I was glad I had wandered in for a fresh baguette and delightful cheese!

Conveniently nestled right next to a wine shop, you’ll find the Peasant cheese shop on Kensington Rd, across from Peppino’s. We ventured in on a wonderful, sunny Sunday a few days ago…
I don’t know much about cheese, but I can tell you the two recommended cheeses we took home were gone within minutes, not to mention delicious! Service was more than friendly, and I would gladly recommend the shop to any cheese lovers and foodies I know (and now on here as well).
Tasty, friendly and surprisingly affordable — is the way I would describe this shop. I’d love to hear what everyone else’s cheese suggestions would be, for the next time we head down :)

A fine cheese shop next to Kensington Wine Market? Talk about a pairing! Ladies and gentleman, you’ve just found your one stop shop for classy, drunk adult entertainment.
What do I know about cheese? Well, I know that I think it’s delicious and I know that I think it’s delicious with wine and that is about it. Luckily for me, places like Peasant cheese shop exist so I can walk in feeling like a total cheesy newb and leave feeling like an over-​the-​top cheesy rock star!
I strolled in nonchalantly a few minutes before they close and the lady working there (the owner, perhaps?) dropped everything she was doing to help me find the cheese of my dreams.
She knew the right questions to ask a a beginner, who appreciates cheese, but is still inclined on occasion to straight up eat Kraft Singles from the package. Don’t judge me. She asked me about the kind of wine I was going to have and eagerly offered up samples that she thought would make a good pairing. Holy cow (cheese) was she right! I served up my bleu cheese, french cheese, belgian cheese and I don’t even know what else cheese on my custom Unilocal cheese board (no big deal) and went to town!
If I had one criticism of Peasant Cheese Shop, it would be that their cheese is too tasty and I wound up drinking WAY too much wine to go with it. This headache is on you, Peasant cheese. :P
