All I can say is bring Sugoi back. We miss you and your delicious rolls. It’s not the same now. The service is still wonderful.

Love this restaurant! Am always satisfied with my food as well as the service, I will continue to come back as this is quickly becoming one of my favorites on the Southside! The dining area is always clean and with plenty of seating I rarely have to wait. Definitely worth a try!

I always love coming here and yet I still haven’t done a review of this place. We love ordering the rolls here. Great price for a lot of the basic rolls and even the good stuff not so bad. The bento boxes have large portions and the rolls are delicious. The chicken karaage is awesome. Service is pretty good too. Only thing that I’ve ordered that I was disappointed in was the takoyaki. It didn’t have much tako(if any) and just a lot of yaki.

This is my favorite sushi spot in Edmonton. Coming from Vancouver, I wasn’t expecting much out of Edmonton. The fish is quite good, and there’s a lot of variety. The prices are pretty good, and there’s always plenty of room at lunch. Give it a go!

I only ordered take out from here, and this is definitely my new sushi take-out choice. The prices? Amazing! I see a few other reviewers said it was expensive… it’s not. Way better price point than Mikado, and IMO a better menu! So many options and lots of specialty rolls. Quality ingredients, and fresh! And I appreciate any sushi place that has real crab to sub instead of that fake pollock junk. Man, when I first brought home my sushi and opened up the container that had the mango roll in it, the smell of REAL crabmeat won me over. They have about 50 different appetizers(incl. tempura and salads), and over 60 different rolls. Also plenty of nigiri and sashimi. Trust me, you’ll find something you like. The service? Well, the take-out service I receive is excellent. The staff are super friendly, and when I had to wait I was offered a drink, and given a complimentary miso soup… even though I didn’t even notice that my order was delayed. The décor is very nice. Clean and fresh. Highly recommended! I give this place a solid 5 stars. Friendly staff, amazing prices, huge variety, and really great taste.

I have been meaning to try this place forever and finally i got my butt there during the week. I was impressed that last call was at 9:30pm for a Japanese restaurant and that they were open till 10:00pm. This place had modern décor I noticed when I wasn’t busy stuffing my face with the takoyaki, okonomiyaki, volcano roll, and caterpillar maki. This was enough food for the 2 of us. I am so happy that I found this new gem in south and don’t have to 30 mins out for Jap food. The prices I found were reasonable and the size of the rolls were to my approval.

I wanted to like this place more than I did or that many of the other reviews led me to believe, so I’ve been holding off writing a review and thought hard about it. First, the décor is modern, contemporary and sleek. It says modern Asian and spares you the kitch that you have to put up with in some other places. The tables are well spaced and there is plenty of room to pull them together for larger groups and to leave couples with some privacy. The staff is friendly, pleasant, helpful and attentive. I’ve got no complaints about the service. It’s the food that lets me down. I realise that all sushi needs to be frozen, it’s what kills some nasty parasites, so the government requires it, but a really good sushi chef knows how to thaw that fish and restore the right moisture level. All the sushi that I was served here was unfortunately soggy, limp and therefore tasteless. I know that some people like to dunk their nigiri in soya sauce and wasabi, but real sushi is a rice dish that’s flavoured with fish and you should be able to eat it as such. At a sushi bar in Japan, wasabi is applied by the chef only and he uses a brush to apply soya sauce to the fish, never the rice, if necessary. You really should be able to enjoy sushi as… well, sushi. And the rolls… they’re the worst. They are needlessly complex and poorly constructed. Okay, California-style rolls are not and have never been authentic, but some things have to apply. The most basic of which is that each piece of sushi is a single bite. If you’re going to eat food with chopsticks, it needs to be. You shouldn’t need two bites to eat any piece of sushi, that turns it into the nightmare date food from hell… rice, fish, soya and nori everywhere! The rolls all strike me as foodie-bait, for people more interested in what the menu says about the food than the food itself. Sushi is about simple subtle flavours, textures and scents, it’s not a contest about how many cool sounding ingredients can we get into a nori burrito!

I can’t believe there aren’t that many reviews for this place. This place still lingers in the back of my mind when I think of sushi in Edmonton. The rolls are soooo good!!! I loved the selection of rolls. Not often do you find rolls that can be spicy, crunchy, soft and with so many variations of seafood. I give them 5 stars based on their selection of roles alone. I ordered the hardcore rolls and I still think about them… It’s so nice to have rolls with a kick. They are so big and filling! I can’t wait to go back!

Sushi from heaven. Best sushi and service in Edmonton. Deserves the 5* without thinking. The alaskan maki and salmon tar-tar are outstanding. Relaxing and chic atmosphere.

I ordered a to-go order today. The Sushi Sashimi Combo. It was awesome! The fresh pieces of tuna and salmon were soft and large portions. Everything was tasty and I was happy it came with Miso soup. I normally dont eat the pink weird novelty ginger but this kind was good too and a nice ending to the meal. I would definitely order from them again. Only slight problem is I waited at the counter for a few minutes before I could find an employee. Maybe get a bell or something? I felt pretty akward.

My preferred sushi place in Edmonton. This is my weekly date night favorite. The quality of the food is great, the price is affordable, and the service is the friendliest I’ve had at a sushi restaurant for n Edmonton. I will absolutely recommend Sushi Sugoi to my friends.

This place is nice inside and the service is fast and friendly. However, I was not impressed with the food quality and high prices. I ordered rolls combo which had cali, dynamite and spicy tuna rolls. The california roll was just decent, dynamite pieces were huge but pretty empty with too much rice and not much of a taste, and tuna roll was disappointing. Its was spicy to the point where it didnt even taste like tuna and tuna was mushy. Salmon sashimi was about $ 14 – 15 just for a few pieces. It is expensive place with good service but not the best food.

Best Sushi place I’ve tried in Edmonton yet! Popped in for a quick weekend lunch, the service was great and the sushi was very fresh and well presented! Can’t wait to try more of the menu. The décor is very nice and booths are comfy.

We really enjoyed our first time experience today! We got there past the lunch rush so there weren’t too many patrons. We ordered the deep fried squid which was super yummy, miso soup and green tea to start. I highly recommend: tempura shrimp roll, avocado roll, and golden dragon roll. Two thumbs up on the food and service. The server, Danielle, was very sweet and suggested a few items on the menu since my fiancé doesn’t do raw fish. We will definitely be back in the upcoming weeks!

I’ve heard rumblings about a sushi place where the old outback steakhouse used to be. Finally, had the opportunity to go for a visit. And I’m happy to say, loved it! I just love the way the place looks. Very much a smooth contemporary design. Clean and neat in every way. They did a good design inside. It really spoke to me. I came here for lunch and ordered the Sashimi Bento special for 15 $. The tempura was right on. However, the best part is the Sashimi. Although it only came with 3 pieces of Salmon and 3 pieces of Tuna, I have to say savored each bite. My sense was that it was prepped very well. Made my mouth water. There are better places in the city, but this is a great place that gets a check mark on atmosphere and food. In my opinion, worthy of 4 stars.

If everything had been as good as the first half hour, this would be five star review. We stopped the old Outback Steakhouse not knowing what to expect. The outside of the building did not appear to have been renovated at all. But the inside was a lovely, warm interpretation of modern with a nice mix of sleek, shiny and cozy. We were shown to a table and given steaming hot towels, a much-appreciated touch. The menu had a nice mix of Izakaya items, bento, nigiri and rolls. It also had great photos of many of the items which would be helpful for those new to Japanese food. We picked two starters: kara age squid and oysters ponzu(not on the menu). Both turned out to be excellent. The squid were delicate little fronds of fried squid tentacles served with an interesting wasabi cream sauce. The oysters were small, but so flavourful and the homemade ponzu sauce more sweet than sour. The plating was very pretty. The bento box complement miso soup was very good. The main dishes did not live up to the starters. The teriyaki bento box featured both beef and teriyaki, a cod cake with a bright pink sauce(which the server did not know what made it so pink), under-cooked tempura, a sweet corn fritter, a few edaname beans, and a tiny iceberg lettuce salad. A small plate of fresh fruit appeared later. The portion was generous, but the effort uneven. The two rolls — Rainbow and Golden Dragon came beautifully presented on over-sized plates which hardly fit on the small table with the bento box. The rainbow was very nice, with noticeable difference in taste depending on which portion one got. The Golden Dragon was less flavourful and the rice seemed like it was likely left-over as it was dry. Without the sauce, it would have been bland. The place was not busy, but we waited a long time for our bill. Over the the meal was good, we left thinking we would likely come back for a selection of starters. Or for the fresh oysters on Tuesdays. BTW: a previous reviewer has said there was no children‘s menu. There is now and it is a good deal at $ 7 a child.

Sushi Sugoi is one of the many sushi restaurants that have popped up in Edmonton’s food scene in the last six months, or at least within the time period that I didn’t blog… or try anything new! Located all the way on Calgary Trail, exiting off 23 Ave, south Edmonton, this was the furthest sushi place possible for me, so I had high expectations. Thankfully, those expectations were fully met when Joe and I went a The Japanese restaurant had taken over an old Outback Steakhouse, the exterior a clear marker. The interior though was redone, quite nicely if you ask me, with a double-sided fireplace, open sushi bar, and large seating areas. They even have their own herb cultivator in the back, just on your way to the washroom! Neat-o. Joe and I took a long look at their extensive menu and decided on our favorites, as per usual. It’s hard to deviate from what you know and love! Salmon nigiri came out first. The salmon was well cut, and fresh, although not as creamy in texture as Sumo Sumo’s in Sherwood Park or Mikado(Downtown). The texture of the rice was a little off, perhaps slightly undercooked for that particular evening. No wasabi in the middle for those of you who are wondering! The Wakame seaweed salad followed shortly, your typical mixture of seaweeds although at Sushi Sugoi, they throw in a heavy dash of Shichimi Togarashi, a seven spice Japanese mix. Our sushi meals usually consist of more nigiri or sashimi, but this night we were feeling rolls. I always get the spicy tuna maki and every sushi establishment I try, a go-to dish. The amount of tuna was minimal and the hot sauce was your standard that you can find at most sushi places. For the record, I love the spicy tuna at Kyoto(Downtown) or Ichiban(very similar recipe) the most! Avocado always wins over cucumber! Joe was in charge of the other roll, and he(safely) chose the Rainbow Roll. I don’t know why but we never order fancy rolls, it’s just not our style. I’m not the biggest fan of imitation crab meat or mango(in rolls), so I can’t say much except that it was well packed and had fresh salmon and tuna! We were feeling particularly hungry that night, or perhaps because we wanted to get the most out of a long drive, so we ordered two other dishes that we normally would never order. The gyoza, a pork filled dumpling, was delicious! Crispy exterior, well seasoned, and not overly greasy. This was also the start of alfalfa sprout craziness… seems like that herbal cultivator is doing a good job. I don’t know why I was so inclined to order this but maybe because it was a platter and had a bit of everything. I really wanted this Sugoi Izakaya platter. We only have one established izakaya in Edmonton, and I don’t see platters like this very often! Four sampler dishes of the best kind of izakaya food there is: deep-fried goodness. The deep-fried squid was the easiest to eat of all four, crispy and bite sized. The Ebi Katsu(deep-fried breaded ebi shrimp) was mostly batter although the shrimp was delicious. A bright pink sauce mayo sauce gave a bit of color(interesting?) and a bed of ‘slaw served as some padding. Does anybody actually eat dish beds? A trio of takoyaki was served with Tonkatsu sauce and a mild wasabi mayo. Mmm, yum! Perfect amount of dough to baby octopus ratio. I always love takoyaki, they’re so cute! Last of the four sampler dishes, chicken karage. A different coating that the Ebi Katsu, but still resulted in a crispy exterior. The only thing missing is beer or sake with dishes like these! At the end of the meal, I was regretting ordering such a heavy dish and was craving for another piece of nigiri, but otherwise, the platter is a good choice for a larger group! Or even a group of 3… since all the items came with 3 a piece. Although my stomach was almost at full capacity, the dessert side stomach was still empty. So I ordered the green tea mochi ice cream, despite Joe’s weak attempts to stop me. He still had a bite. How could you not, with such beautiful presentation? The mochi is nothing superb, as all the restaurants buy it from a distributor, but points go out to the berry coulis, the colored white chocolate shavings, and the dark chocolate leaf. Cindy approves. The cost of the meal, surprisingly, ended up being pretty similar to what we’d spend at any other sushi restaurant, even though at first glance the prices of rolls looks to be right up there with Mikado and Japonais Bistro. If in the area, I would definitely return to Sushi Sugoi. Too bad most of the time when I’m in that area, it’s to spend the day at Ikea and have Swedish meatballs or on my way out to the airport! Delicious food, large selection of rolls, and alfafa sprout craziness! Give it a try!
