Mancakes Bakery

I bought a box of the mini cupcakes, a few regular cupcakes, a brownie and the cake pop before they closed the retail location. Among the flavours, the cheese tastes stronger than the coke. Some cupcakes have more fillings than the others. The cupcakes’ texture is condensed for all three cake bases — chocolate, spiced, vanilla. The buttercream tastes a bit sweet like icing sugar. I like the King Kong, Pumpkin, and Breakfast. Their dark chocolate brownie is good; I can taste the light spiciness in the chipotle ganache but I can’t taste the IPA in the almonds, and there are no gin soaked cranberries on top of the brownie as what their facebook picture has showned. The caramel coke cake pop is too sweet — tastes like sugar paste. Regarding the service, the man behind the counter explained fairly well to me about the ingredients of the cupcakes, and he packed the items nicely into the bag.
Unfortunately, they just do corporate orders now. Their cupcakes are much better than the other cupcakes’ stores or the big chain stores which mostly use colorings and flavourings. The good thing about the cupcakes at Mancakes is that their cupcakes taste and look natural (I don’t think they use colorings), not too sweet with real ingredients, and that they always invent new and unique flavours. I like how they use liquor for some of their cupcakes but I wish the liquor’s taste is stronger. I hope they will open a retail location again in the future.

great cupcake/​dessert place. New items all the time. (donuts and chocolate covered bacon) Not just hype and crazy flavours. Even the crazy flavours are well balanced and tasteful. Get the mini ones to try out all the flavours before you commit to a big one.

Points for creativeness and superb customer service. The staff is really friendly and have this enthusiastic vibe that really brightens the customer’s day. They’re also really educated in selling their cupcakes.
Was introduced to signing up for a belly account which gave me a reward today. This was my 2^nd visit and I must admit, their other items interests me more than their mancakes.
I’ve tried both their previous and this month’s features flavor; Johnny B, Pumpkin spice latte. I also tried apple brie which is one of their regular. My favourite of the three was the Johnny B. It wasn’t overly sweet and had an interesting flavor. Didn’t taste the rum, though. The other two sounded interesting but the taste didn’t deliver what was marketed. However, last time I went I also go to try their chilled cake pucks. They were pretty impressive and pairs well with their gelato (which i also tried).
This time I tried their bollywood mini doughnut. They were awesome. It was mini doughnut coated (shaken) in curry and sugar. Surprisingly, these two flavors actually work.

Epic cupcakes, for adults. Worth it to stop in and grab a cup of coffee, take it in and have a neat cupcake! Take some home with the little «toolbox»

If you’re looking for a crazy unique cupcake-​this is the place.
I was wary to try the more outrageous flavors like buffalo wing or Chicago (with cheddar!), so
I stuck with King Kong: a chocolate base with banana custard inside and a marshmallow top.
I didn’t care much for the marshmallow top as it tasted almost stale, but the banana custard was a welcome flavor and the chocolate was moist.
What I REALLY liked, though, was the caramel coke «puck”-like a cake pop, but in the shape of a hockey puck. So much flavor in a tiny little puck!

Mancakes Bakery is a pretty cool cupcake stop. Located on Robson closer to BC Place, it’s a small shop that offers unique flavours. I bought a Groupon for 5 cupcakes, which you can redeem for 2/​day. On the wall, they have descriptions of many of their cupcakes with great close up photos.
The one I tried was the Apple Brie. The first bite told me this is not the dense and hard cupcakes I have had in the past. It was fluffy and filled with apple jelly, yum! I liked the filling part and there was just enough to not overwhelm the cake. I’m not a big fan of sugary sweet icing and found the brie icing to be just sweet enough to complement the cupcake.
There’s a few counter seats facing the street, and 2 small tables with chairs and booth seating. We were the only ones that sat in and I really like the atmosphere of music, and friendly staff.
Also have a clean bathroom at the back which was great. Come check out the cool cupcake flavours!

Just what the world needs — another fufu cupcake spot. The niche that sets Mancakes Bakery apart from the hordes of other gourmet cupcake spots is that their cupcakes are manly flavours with such manly titles as Bacon Chili Chocolate, King Kong, and Buffalo Wing. Of course, many of their items have remarkably un-​manly names like Pink Peppercorn Grapefruit and Young Bunny. And even their business name — Mancakes — is probably about the most un-​masculine name they could have chosen. It implies that the cakes are baked with a special secret ingredient that only men can provide.
The store is even decorated with toolboxes to drive home the point of manliness. The Mastercraft tool chest on the west side of the store would look a lot more authentic and «lived in» if they would remove the «new box» stickers from the top and bottom shelves. (Just a hint — slap some STP stickers and faux grease on it for some street cred.)
I got the Rum and Coke cupcake which was fluffy and sweet like a cupcake should be. Did it taste like Rum and Coke? No, but I didn’t expect it would. Honestly, I think all cupcakes taste pretty much the same regardless of what moniker is thrown on them. They’re all light, airy, balls of sugar that stimulate our pleasure centres and warm the cockles of our hearts. (How’s that for a manly description?) But that’s just me.
The service here was fast and friendly. The server made us feel warm and welcome and thanked us on our way out.
I don’t know how much longer this current fetish for gourmet cupcakes will continue among the foodies before they turn their attention to something else (Where in the hell are all the gourmet spam restaurants? It’s time for a revolution!) but Mancakes will probably be around for quite some time to come (Ha!)
*UPDATE — On my second visit here I tried the Buffalo Wing cupcake with hot sauce. (Yep, hot sauce on a cupcake). The hot-​sauced cupcake wasn’t enough to make me feel manly so I ordered some 200 Proof Death Wish coffee to wash it down. The Death Wish coffee is a fun treat. It’s twice as strong as any other dark roast coffee out there. So strong it should have a skull and crossbones on it. (Maybe it does.) If you live in Vancouver and want to try it, you’ll have to come here because no one else in the city serves it.

Points for interestingness, but points off for sometimes weak flavour and sheer priciness.
As cupcakes go, the bases are good, though maybe a bit too fragile, especially after the injection of cream into them. There is a chance that just tearing off the paper cup will cause it to crumble, which was the case with our Buffalo Wing cupcake. This is obviously irritating, but if the cause is giving you more tasty cream, it’s hard to fault.
Overall, you definitely get something interesting and you get something to talk about if you bring in a platter of mixed ManCakes to a potluck. For that reason alone it’s definitely worth a look. For me, the interestingness isn’t matched by flavour unless you pick the right ones (like Chocolate Red Wine). It’s so hit-​and-​miss that I recommend you get one of their mini-​cupcake sampler packs for a wide sampling instead of going for the standard cupcakes, unless you already know what you are doing.
Buffalo Wing
My first try and maybe I put too much hope on this being interesting. I was totally not getting any strong flavours at all, and when it’s advertised as having blue cheese, hot sauce, and crispy chicken, I expected some of those flavours to really come through. Nope.
Chocolate Red Wine
Best of the lot that I tried. Clear wine flavour but not overdone.
Is this for GQ metrosexual gays? The flavour combo here has an elegance suitable for classy peeps of any gender.
Probably one of the safest choices in the store.
King Kong
The marshmallow plopped on top was gross. To begin with, it’s not a cream and the shape looks more like something that fell out of King Kong. Then there’s the clammy texture.
They get points for trying marshmallow on a cupcake, though.
Flavour wise you do get some banana, but flavours are weak here.
For me, the worst aspect of ManCakes is the price. They get points for interestingness, but price is a bit high to really compete with the options. Cartems Donuterie gives you a bigger product that is easier to eat, equally interesting, perhaps more tasty (but we are comparing cupcakes to donuts here, obviously) — and cheaper at $ 3, versus $ 3.75 per ManCake.

Mancakes is my favorite cupcake spot in Vancouver!!! I always get the chicago because who puts cheese in a cupcake and makes it taste delicious? Mancakes, thats who! Anywayyy, I didn’t come here to rave about the cupcakes… its their chai tea latte! Hot damn!!! I sat in mancakes last night and experienced quite the orgasm in my mouth! If I lived close by, I would make a morning run everyday!
Oh and the owner… I think its the owner… is such a beauty!

As other reviewers have mentioned it was the sign that caught my name and being that we live in the DC area with cupcake wars and the well known Georgetown Cupcake– I told my hubby we just had to go in and see how masculine Mancakes is! The service was fast, the staff were super friendly and knowledgable! Hubby had the Rum and Coke and I had the Chicago. I preferred his probably a bit more than mine his was a bit more sweet mine definitely had a bite from the cheddar cheese but keep in mind my taste buds and brain think «cupcakes and sweet go hand in hand» Super happy we checked this gem out and I recommend it as well and it’s not a chain!!!

I love this place! The sign or the name of the place is what caught my attention and the fact that it’s cupcakes.
By far the best cupcakes I’ve ever had. My husband and I got the Chicago and breakfast flavored cupcakes. Very unique flavors that all goes well together. They have other flavors that I will come back for before I leave the city.

Are you tried of your girlfriend dragging you along to those prissy little cupcake shops to get a freaking red velvet or a typical vanilla cupcake that you instantly feel like less of a man carrying in public? I mean there are a lot of us guys who can’t help but love these dainty little pieces of heaven but let’s be real here. the typical cupcake is basically like a mimosa or Wine spritzer. or a COSMOPOLITAN! and we deserve to have our guilty pleasure to be more beefed up, don’t you agree? Well thank the bakery lord for MANCAKES!
These people know exactly what they’re doing, from names like «King Kong» to toppings like chicken wings and even bacon, us guys can walk proud with these babies in our hands as we bury our faces into them. Oh and don’t worry ladies there are tons of sweet treats you’ll love as well, I mean they even a have a breakfast cupcake. what woman doesn’t love breakfast?!
Seriously though, I loved every cupcake I’ve tried so far and can’t wait to try another. Luckily I grabbed a groupon which saved some «dough» …get it? So I can’t really give any less than a 5 star review.

The girl working there was quite helpful — what’s their best seller? Should I go for the bacon chili or buffalo wing flavour? (All the important questions in life)
Their best seller is their King Kong (chocolate filled with banana cream topped with an express marshmallow) which she gave me a sample of.
I opted for the bacon chili — slightly too rich for my taste but the bacon bits on top were yum.
The cupcakes are made in their bakery in Coquitlam and delivered daily to their store.

I suppose you’d like to know what this tool box it. It is all the flavors they have in mini cupcakes in one little box — affectionately called the «tool box» to taste test all of their flavors. How fun is that? And perfect, really. It was $ 20 for the tool box and worth it.
I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed in the flavors of most of the cupcakes. Although some were quite strong — both good and bad. I’m not saying the cupcakes were bad — I think I just got myself to hyped up for them and then was a bit let down. I really disliked the Buffalo wing one. I was most let down by the apple Brie — I had some high hopes for that one. I LOVED the Breakfast one and the one with grapefruit — both were very tasty!
Service was great though — very friendly and helpful!

I came here with the vaneats coupon, which basically gave us two cups of teapigs tea and 6 mini sized mancakes.
To be completely honest, they weren’t exactly too memorable but I thought the bacon one was the most unique. To be completely honest, we weren’t too impressed with them and we pretty much bought them for the novelty. I feel that I would come again, only if I had a coupon.
You should try this if you feel adventurous and want to explore the different combinations of cake flavours!

Was in the neighborhood this afternoon, so I quickly dashed in to try a couple of these oft-​talked about Mancakes. The flavor combinations are super unique — Chicago style with a cheddar cheese butter cream — and the guy behind the counter was really friendly and helpful. The décor is awesome — tool boxes and such, and the place is pretty welcoming.
I’m on the fence about the stars because the cupcake itself wasn’t as good as I think it could be. The cake in the Tequila Pineapple one seemed. old? It was a bit hard and stale towards the top. The middle and the frosting was tasty though. The King Kong was pretty solid though. Either way, I think they will be that much better once they have the kitchen on site and are putting super fresh ones out.

I like how the owners found a gap in the dessert market — As I have not seen a place that does cupcakes like these guys! I was particularly impressed by the manly décor of the place — greys and reds and a kick-​ass clever logo painted on the wall.
The flavours are inventive, and can easily spark the curiosity to try them all! the «Buffalo wing» one sounded pretty crazy and the «breakfast» /​«bacon chilli chocolate» drew in my interest instantly.
The service is delightful, and I like how they’ll ask you if it’s your first time there and will gladly tell you more about the flavours and will gladly make recommendations. I think an order of a dozen mini sized cupcakes are a perfect little gift for any of your guy friends out there who are adventurous and down to try crazy creative desserts!

It’s a cute little bakery owned by a male. And he decided to make the cupcake more manly by having less icing and more manly favored like whisky and lime, rum and cake, savory flavored like buffalo and breakfast.
I like the wine and choclate, it’s moist with a hint of wine. The liquor favors are alright. Not a big fan of the savory ones. Have to give it that the favors are creative and unique. But I am not a big fan of cupcake so my opinion maybe bias. However it draws my attention with the name of the shop. And I am all for less icing. Can’t take too much sweet either, so the frosting part was great.
And they have this coffee bean called «death wish»?? From New york??? Claim to be the strongest coffee? Maybe you will dare to try it.
