Waitress was absolutely lovely, kid’s burger was out so fast that my toddler didn’t even have time to ask for it, and adult meals were excellent — steaks are always exactly medium rare. However, I’ve got to ask — is the«ranch dressing» made from expired cream cheese blended with parsley and blue cheese crumbles? Because it didn’t resemble any Ranch dressing I’ve ever eaten or made, and the taste and consistency were unfortunate. Please let me know if you’d like me to bring in a sample and recipe so you know what is generally expected of Ranch dressing!

This was a cool place. Lots of good memorabilia crammed everywhere and a great atmosphere. I have the loaded potatoe skins and a classic burger. The food was excellent! The service was great, absolutely nothing to fault. They also do a wicked cider that may well be the best I’ve ever had… Only wish more burger places were like this. This place puts Eddie Rockets to shame.

On our way to an event last night, my friend and I were looking for a cheap and cheerful bite to eat. We popped our heads into no less than 4 restaurants en route which were all as empty as you might expect on a Wednesday in January. Out of desperation for a little atmosphere and craic we followed some other diners up the stairs and into Captain Americas. The place was jammed! Families, couples, groups of teenagers, there were people from all age groups and demographics. The food — tex mex, steaks, burgers — isn’t exactly healthy but our nachos and garlic fries were tasty and hit the spot. Cocktails were € 6 so bonus points there. Will be back for the chicken wings when I’m not wearing a new white shirt!

I went here with some friends for a birthday — I wasn’t impressed. The food was average, the service was slow and the staff weren’t very helpful. I figured that because people are always talking about it, that it must be great but I guess it just wasn’t for me.

The server completely forgot our order… after 40 minutes we realised that it would never come until we asked them about it, after 5 minutes we were served, total minutes waiting = 45 minutes and it was obvious that the food was reheated, I wonder if we didn’t ask for it if we would be served? I guess not. Not coming back.

I walked in not knowing what to expect. I was met by an overwhelmed staff servicing many families with small children. I’m not necessarily saying this as a negative, but there were just too many little kids. Very loud, crying, screaming, running, etc… As for my experience, the food took a while and the server didn’t return to refill drinks. So that was disappointing. The food wasn’t terrible. Pretty much traditional American stuff. The restaurant as a whole was pretty crammed together tight, but that seems to be the trend in Dublin. Overall, I saw it, won’t have any desire to go back. Not that it was bad, it just wasn’t THAT good.

Here you’ll find reasonably priced American-ish food that isn’t all that bad. Finding an inexpensive lunch spot in Dublin is a tricky feat. Hunger + prices + my husband’s penchant for comics got us through the doors and up the stairs. It’s a bar and grill kind of place with nice big windows at the back. Not bad. The menu looks like one you’d find in so many restaurants in the U.S. All of the familiar favorites. Well, maybe YOUR favorites. I’m not all that crazy about the cuisine of my own country. I let my husband pick, and we shared an app and an entrée. While the menu is very American, the food itself has a bit of a twist. Fried mushrooms: pretty good. Just what you’d expect. Americans typically dip them in ranch, but these were served with garlic mayo. They should bottle this stuff, because it’s pretty killer. I even ate the remaining dip with the chips(french fries) that came with our entrée. Enchilada: interesting… it was an enchilada, I suppose. The chicken was in pieces, rather than shredded, for one. Mostly, though, the seasoning was… unexpected. It had more of an Italian flavor, rather than Mexican. It wasn’t bad, but I don’t think that I would order it on purpose. It’s always interesting to see how American food is translated in another country, and the prices are good. The service was fine and the food was just okay. Not much to write home about.

My friends suggested Cap’t Americas for dinner so I thought I’d give it a try. First, the menu is very hard to read because of the color combinations. Yes, red and blue are opposite colors, but you need to play with the hues in order for them to play off each other. The specials literally hurt to look at. I ordered the starter Buffalo Wings(€ 11.95) as my entrée because on a scale of 1 to American, their proportions are American – and I had a mean craving for wings. You get to choose between three different flavors: BBQ, Cajun, and Hot & Spicy. I thought the safest way to go would be BBQ. In all honesty, the wings weren’t bad, but I don’t think they were worth nearly € 12. Not to mention my wings arrived with sauce all over the bowl. I don’t know what it was, either the heat or what, but I wasn’t really feeling the place. On another note, my friend ordered the same, but she ordered a side of chips and they were kind of magical; trust me, you need an order of those! My table also ordered a pitcher of Passion Punch(€ 25), which was pretty good. It consisted of Absolut vodka, peach schnapps, apple juice and passion fruit purée. I’d definitely say this is a deal as it gave four ladies two full glasses! That’s ~€ 2.50 per cocktail – it seems their alcohol menu is economically sound. So if you’re with a group of friends, I’d definitely recommend getting a pitcher off their drinks menu. tl;dr — Food, no. Chips + Alcohol, yes!

Typical American type food, lovely burgers and HUGE nacho portions. Free coke refils too! The staff are very friendly and helpful. The posters and stuff on the wall us a good touch. It can be a bit warm on a hot day though

I was bringing my mam and sister out for a last minute dinner a few Sundays ago and we found ourselves walking up the very familar steps inside the door of Captain Americas. We must have walked around for a good hour and half before my mam suggested we try Captain Americas for old times sake. At this stage I was so hungry that I would have eaten taken a bite out of my runner but nevertheless, I was still up for a walk down memory lane. I, much like I’m sure many Dubliners do, have very fond memories of Captain Americas as a child. To hear the words, ‘We’re going to Captain Americas” as a kid nearly brought as much joy as Christmas morning! We definitely weren’t as spoilt as we are today with the abundance of American diner style restuarants but I was still very curious to see if Captain Americas still held up. So did I hold up? Well, no… not really. That’s not to say it was a BAD experience because it wasn’t. Perhaps it was the time and day we chose(Sunday evening) but my God was it loud! Plenty of kids bustling around and there was also a clown offering face painting and ballon animals. The food wasn’t great but it did the trick. All three of us got the 2 courses for € 15.95 deal. My sister and myself opted for the wings while my mam chose the breaded mushrooms. The wings? Erm yeah, pretty feckin’ great I’ve gotta say! A big hefty portion, that truth be told, stuffed me to the gills even before my main arrived. I couldn’t fault the wings one little bit. My Mam said she enjoyed her breaded mushrooms but as my Mam has said before, she’ll enjoy anything that she doesn’t have to cook herself so maybe she’s not the greatest person to go on! For the mains we all went with the burger and fries option. I added a portion of chilli to mine because my eyes are bigger than my belly. The skinny fries were your standard fare that were nothing to write home about. The burger, in brutal honesty, was a little flavourless and fairly dry. I guess that’s the trouble with so many great burger joints around the city now is that there is quite a high standard to be held to. The chilli I’d put down as being a little watery for my tastes but the flavour was there. To finish it off… The staff are a God send to that place because I can’t remember seeing a restuarant so manic and all waiters/waitresses/clowns alike always had a smile on their face, painted on or not. We barely noticed the wait because the kitchen staff were whacking the food out in no time, although perhaps to the detriment of the food. Tthe wings were fantastic and everything else was just hum-ho but here’s the things guys… as I sat there I realised this place isn’t for us anymore. We’ve grown up and moved onto to our hipster burger joints, our crackbirds and our burrito bars. This place is for the next generation of kids and families to create lifelong memories. Bring your kids to Jo’Burger and see how they get on with a caramelized chilli banana and peanut chilli sauce burger. Or bring them to Captain Americas and they’ll be talking about it for weeks, which I guess is the true essence of this place. Captain Americas, I won’t be back but that doesn’t mean I won’t remember…

We were craving burgers and decided to give this place a try. It was pretty busy for a Tuesday evening so we had to wait 10−15mins. Once we got to our table we waited almost another 10mins by the time our server came by so by that point we had our food orders ready at the same time as the initial drink order. We ordered 4 meals; the mushroom burger, the cheeseburger, the big smoke and the kids penne bolognese with salads, cheesy garlic bread and baked potatoes for the sides. The burgers are huge and tasty however there were pieces of small bones found in the mushroom burger(not just one but a few small pieces). As soon as we told our server she got the manager and they took it away and apologized profusely. We ordered the ribs in place of the mushroom burger just to be safe and it came out quickly and was tasty. They didn’t charge for the mushroom burger but did charge full price for the ribs and the rest of the meals(no discount). We aren’t originally from Ireland so not sure how restaurants normally work but usually in Canada they give you some sort of a discount or else give the replacement meal for free because of the inconvenience. Overall this place is just ok. They dealt with the situation well but the rest of experience and food wasn’t enough to wow us to return.

Meh is right. The Guinness was bubbly, not a good sign. It was not a very nice pint either. The wings were OK, a bit dry. Big portion, it’s a starter for two. But I had it as a main and it was more than enough. My partner didn’t really like his chilli at all. Hidden under a blanket of nacho chips was a meager amount of chilli, which was soaked up by the massive amount of rice in the bottom of the bowl. Which resulted in the chilli being quiet dry. We stated an itch and we won’t be back.

Seriously I don’t understand the hype about this place. Busy(very), noisy and they don’t have enough menus. Well, maybe I just had a bad experience, but I wouldn’t go back. I heard a lot about this place because it is always listed on food guides as one of the best places to have chicken wings. So I wanted to try it. Problem: they do not take reservations. So you just go and give it try. I did it. Bad idea. The place was packed and if I wanted a table I wouldn’t need to wait at least 35 min. No way. That’s not free food. So I went to another place with my friends. By chance — and another group of friends — we tried it again. On a Friday night we miraculously got a table. Yay. But they run out of menus. Ahhhh. 15m to bring us one menu, only one for 4 of us. We had the chicken wings, that was good and came in a big portion; and I had a chicken fillet with lots of salad. It was alright. Drinks: expensive. Only a few beer options and plenty of cocktails. The service was Ok but yeah, I had go with this place I wasn’t impressed at all.

They do lots of value menu meal deals which are worth it. We came for lunch and I got the cheeseburger with fries and wings as starter. Loved the wings and the appetizer portion was huge. The burger was okay, nothing special, but came with loads of chips. Definitely worth your money in terms of portions. Also the vanilla Milkshake was really good. I think this is a good place to go if you’re looking for a «fancier» Johnny rockets :)

We hadn’t been here for about 20 years. Now we remember why. What we didn’t like: waiting in the overcrowded bar area(no seats available, getting jostled every few seconds by people going in or out); we had to catch a waitress’s attention to get our our order taken, after she’d left us for 15 minutes; the ‘crispy’ potato skins are a lie– no effort whatever had been made to render them crispy; the 25 minute wait after our starters had been cleared away before the burgers arrived; the bottle of beer arriving without a glass being offered; the 15 minute wait for the second beer which arrived, without apology, just as i was finishing my meal. The burgers were perfectly all right. The soggy potato skins were tasty too. Too cap it all off, there was a woman with three teenage girls at the table right next to us. One of them was having a birthday and they were giddy and EXTREMELY noisy, having competitions to see who could create the most excruciating out of tune ‘singing’ sounds. Im serious. It actually hurt my ears. Even when she answered the phone, it was in a voice so high-pitched and bawled out, that i could feel the blood vessels in my ears bursting. We didnt actually complain, as it was one of the girls’ birthday, but the adult knew they were bothering us and didnt give a s**t. There werent any empty tables, otherwise we would have moved. So, Captn A, proudly serving since 1971, i can guarantee itll be another 20 years before nostalgia brings me back, at least. This appalling standard was acceptable in a 1970s and 1980s Dublin that had very few restaurants at the time. Now it is not acceptable. This place needs new management urgently. But wait– it was packed, so they are getting away with it, so dont expect anything better on your visit.

Oh Cap, bring on the Americana and freedom fries. There are so many choices for American fast food these days but Captain America’s is still something special. Maybe that’s the nostalgia talking but I don’t care. It actually is the nostalgia talking. The food isn’t great and it isn’t exactly cheap, but Cap’s will always have a place in my heart. Five stars for being Captain America’s.

Think of an IRISHTGIFFRIDAYSWITHAMERICANFOOD! Ask them to make you a drink that’s not on the menu! The bartenders are the best. Comfort food for a yank displaced across the pond. it’s better then pub food, but honestly not worth the price. Drinks are expensive but not watered down. Id come back with friends, but it’s more of a one off, than a place I’d visit regularly.

Good grub, Good drink, Good deals, Good spot. This is a real student favourite and the fact that most of our parents and close relatives ate here once in a lifetime not so long ago makes this place all the more special. Us college students in Dublin receive probably one of the best deals imaginable — Mon-Fri is Buy one Main Course, get one FREE until 5pm. We also get a good drinks deal where it’s € 3 pints and selected cocktails Mon-Wed. I’d say Captain America is chuffed as he’s saving the students of Dublin by not emptying our pockets and is filling our stomachs instead. I’d always get the BBQ burger with chips which is veddy good and the Oreo milkshake always goes down an absolute treat afterwards. You’re sure to enjoy this place with it’s legendary memorabilia hanging up on all the walls from jerseys to Guitars. An A++ from me and a recommended spot for a date and a chat. Over and out.

My husband and I love American food, so we visited this restaurant hoping for a fix. We sampled a few of our usual favourites: Buffalo wings: We chose the spicy option. The wings came out with a little spice colouring on them but no hot sauce! Wings should be smothered in hot sauce. They had absolutely no flavour. The bottom third of the bowl was full of oil which was very unappetising(was this supposed to be the sauce?!). The serving size was generous, however, they were cut into tiny pieces. The blue cheese sauce was bland and clearly just out of a bottle(its really not that hard to make fresh blue cheese sauce). Ribs: The meat was tender, however, it was not fall apart tender like I prefer. The ribs did have a spice rub over it which was ok, but the sauce, which was served on the side, was just a tomato sauce with a very slight BBQ flavour. Very disappointing. The taco fries were ok, but should have been served with some sour cream. The food was terrible and overpriced for what it was. However, the service was prompt and the staff were friendly and professional. The surroundings were ok too. These are the only reasons I rated this place as 1 star.
