I called in Philpotts after a dissapointing experience with Moose Coffee. This particular branch is located in City Tower, very close to a Starbucks Coffee shop. Philipotts is a small independant chain of sandwich shops, with a good amount of stores in both Manchester and Liverpool. It seems their traditional décor is 4 stairs going up and then you are in the resturant. Philpotts has a huge sandwich bar with a large selection of toppings and bread, this includes muffins, wraps and even gluten free bread. They also have a breakfast bar where you can get the likes of egg sandwiches. I ordered a Tuna Crunch with Cheddar cheese, as Gluten free bread is much smaller, I know it is pricer but still 60p extra is a little bit too expensive, it ended up being £6 for one gluten free and one normal sandwich however I do feel the prices could of been much better, possibly including a drink. My sandwich was quite nice, the tuna tasted good quality and it was my favourite gluten free bread — White Genius. I did however find the peppers to be a little to hard to eat. Most days, this place is open till 5pm but they get very quiet in the afternoon and staff begin to leave. They is disabled access with the lift however this is out of order at the moment. This is a nice sandwich bar however and definitley deserves a good rating, the staff are nice too, however I can’t give anything more than 3 stars because of the price and it didn’t have a good feel sitting in, I know I visited late in the Afternoon but it was quieter than a library, I know I hate noisy places but I hate ultra quiet places, where you feel like you will be shot if you talk, nearly as much.

Hurried lunch with the boyf near his snazzy building whilst I am on the job hunt? Why not! Forgoing Starbucks due to my general dislike of the chain, we opted for Philpotts. It never seemed to be open when we were both frequent users of the gym(ahem, this time last year for me.) it appears to do a storming trade during lunch time, so why be open out of the hours 11 — 3? The layout of the room is very easy to navigate, with only two tills taking payments, skipping over the issue often found at eateries such as Katsouri’s, when you’re not quite sure where you can order and then pay, usually leading to a lot of huffing and puffing. I decided not to eat, foolishly, because I had some soup in the fridge waiting to be eaten up. The boyf took no pity on me and tucked into a jacket potato with beans&cheese, cheese first as offered, while I worked my way through a yoghurt with forest fruits and granola. If I worked in an office near a Philpotts, you wouldn’t be able to get me out of it. The forest fruits were lovely and sweet, the sandwiches were more than tempting, and the salad bar was a great sight, even better was the small queue forming along the counter. The jacket potato skin was, sadly, a bit hard to cut through using the plastic knife & fork and the set up of the hot food could be offputting for many; meat and potatoes sitting under heat lamps. It didn’t put me off considering the doors had probably only been open for about 30 minutes. Philpotts, please get more seating. I know you’re working the niche of the working lunch but watching people standing up and eating was(almost) enough for me to offer my seat to everyone who passed. Oh, and I love the crisp display.

I used to work near to a Philpotts in Liverpool years ago and it was always a great pay day treat, as the prices weren’t the cheapest. I’ve since started working in Manchester City Centre and have a Philpotts in my building, great I thought, better increase the credit limit on my mastercard. Little did I have to worry, Philpotts have started offering a £3.50 meal deal comprising of a pre-made sandwich, a can and a pack of Tyrells crisps. The sandwiches have all the same premium fillings as the deli counter ones, the chicken, bacon and salad one is my favourite with the bacon and egg the runner up. The only downside I’ve found to my newly rediscovered love of Philpotts is the soups. Back in the day Philpotts used to have lovely soups that were different from the normal Heinz offering, but now their flavours just seem odd, they have sausages and things in. Oh, and if I’m running late for work then it’s great to pop in for porridge with raisins in.
