History
Established in 2008.
I started teaching, after leaving my pattern making career at Gap Inc. and while launching my bridal business. It was a great way to earn money and keep my brain working. I had no idea how rewarding it would be.
In 2003, I laid down my bridal threads to have a baby and spent the next few years focusing my attention on my daughter. I started teaching workshops again in 2007 and then a friend introduced me to a young girl who wanted to learn how to sew. After working privately with this talented 8 year old, I expanded my workshops to include classes for kids.
After working with children for about a year and a half, I developed a Fashion Sewing Summer Camp and started teaching it in the summer of 2009. We have so much fun designing, sewing and thinking about Fashion. It’s a week of inspiration and success for each girl as they make something for themselves and show it off at the end in a runway Fashion show.
Camps are now available in both Alameda and San Francisco!
Meet the Business Owner
Jennifer S.
Business Owner
Jennifer graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with a degree in Fashion Design, in 1990. Her career began with her company Ask-in Designs. During the early 1990’s, Ask-in Designs produced a line of hats as well as a small line of clothing. In 1992, Jennifer went to work for Gap Inc., where she spent nearly a decade, as a pattern maker.
After studying with Baltimore Couturier Susan Khalje, Jennifer went on to open Jennifer Serr Couture Dressmaking. In her downtown Oakland studio, she designed custom made couture gowns for Bridal and evening, specializing in clean, elegant and classic looks, inspired by her sense of simplistic beauty.
Closing her studio in 2003, to have a baby, Jennifer now teaches sewing to kids and adults in Alameda and San Francisco as well as teaching pattern making at California College of the Arts.
«Sewing is my passion and I hope I can pass that love and appreciation on to the next generation!» — Jennifer Serr
