Simply Splendid Bakery

I live very close by so I used to go to Simply Splendid on a weekly basis.
There are a lot of places to get the radish pastry (蘿蔔絲餅), but this place is one of my favorites! It’s moist but not too mooshy, a really good amount of radish and mushrooms and seasonings, and on top it’s sprinkled with white sesame seeds. They don’t always have it though! If you come too early in the morning it’s not ready yet, and if you come in the late afternoon/​evening they might have run out already so the struggle can be so real. :(
I also really really like their blueberry cream bun and their blueberry danish/​croissant twist. The guava version is also really tasty!
Why the 2 stars? Bewareeeeeeee of the tuna bun. It had a slightly sour taste to it, and ended up giving me food poisoning (and I have a pretty strong stomach, having weathered sketchy street food in Asia and never getting food poisoning). Also, I once got the vegetarian radish pastry right around their closing time… and it also had a suspiciously sour aftertaste to it. Needless to say after a bite, I had to throw it away for fear of another bout of food poisoning…
BEWARE and stick to the non-​meat, non-​fish items if you want to be extra safe!

I went to pay. My bill was $ 8.21. I gave her 8 dollars, 1 dime and 11 pennies. She said too many coins. Max 10 coins. Whaaaat?!

The bread looks better than it tastes — that is so weird! I tried the pineapple bun/​milk crisp and the ham/​egg bread. The pineapple bun/​milk crisp bread looked delicious, but it was really bland and dry. Both the crust and the milk crisp tasted like nothing, as if they added a bunch of flour as a filler. We bought four of the pineapple bun/​milk crisp, and they were all just bland and stale. The ham/​egg bread was ok and it was surprisingly moist. $ 1.60 was pretty pricey for the quality that we got compared to the other asian bakeries.
We were at first pretty excited they have a punch card program, but we wont be back for a second visit.

Additional visits, additional dan tats… the egg white is a bit bland as expected, but oddly a day later and cold it gets better.
Regular dan tat and egg white both suffer from a bit too much crust. On a visual inspection the custard to crust ratio looks perfect, but on consumption there’s simply too much crust. Filling on the regular dan tat is pretty decent.
Overall, they’re okay. Not a place I’d even drive around the corner to (not by SGV standards!), but if you’re already in the same plaza it’s not a bad stop.

I come here cause they have pastries my dad likes. They have pastries, some wheat, desserts, and cakes.
They also have a stamp card that if you get a stamp for every $ 10 spent. (about 10 pastries)
There’s plenty of parking since it is in a plaza.

They have the BEST Chocolate Croissant in town. If you are a chocolate croissant fan, look no further. There are not many Chinese bakery places in this neighborhood that sells chocolate croissant, so this is definitely a hidden gem. For the quality, size and price, way way better than the ones in Starbucks. They are super fresh and well baked with golden flaky on the outside and thin crisp layers of crumb inside which filling with the perfect amount of chocolate! Drooling… Just FYI, they normally sold out pretty fast in the morning around 11:30 or 12. But don’t go too early either because they won’t be ready until 9:30 ish. Also their coconut heart shape bread is my favorite too! Hope that helps!

They had five kinds of egg tarts here. I got all except the egg white one.
I got the Portuguese, Hong Kong shortbread, Hong Kong pastry crust as well as a oval shaped one.
The egg tarts are pretty good. The crusts are tasty with a creamy egg center.
They have a $ 10 maximum on cards. Otherwise, they charge you 50 cents.

Half sheet Cake for $ 22, very good deal. You can get sugar frosting on it for no extra charge. They also do a reward card program where you spend 10 dollar, you get one stamp. After 100 (10 stamps) you get 10 bucks worth of free bread. My church order the sheet cake on a monthly basis for birthday celebrations.

After being off of a strict diet for a while, I was looking forward to indulging in an egg tart. This was the only place we hastily found still (barely!) open and that still had egg tarts at the end of the day (til 8pm) so we drove 15 minutes out of our way to get here right before closing. I was excited to see one Unilocal picture show 3 different egg tarts side by side from here, since I’d always been uninformed about the difference between the different styles (hong kong, Taiwan, Cantonese)… and wanted to see what the big deal was between the different kinds. At closing, they had egg white tarts and Hong Kong– style egg tarts. So I got both. Pretty fun, and the result is a profile photo after 10 years of being a question mark face.
Taste: one shell was hard, and the other was not. (It was nice and flaky). Inconsistent? Both egg tarts were mild in flavor and sweetness. I usually love less-​sweet tasting desserts, as well as alternative substitutions like egg whites,… but if I had a choice I’d probably pass on these next time because it lacked that very eggy/​custardy punch that is good about an egg tart when you bite into it. However, I do appreciate the choice of a slightly (healthier?) or less sweet egg tart if one day needed! I am trying to cut back on sugar… (Not very successfully currently)
I do still want to go back and try the other kinds of egg tarts just so I know the difference since some of my friends only like a certain kind. Me, I pretty much like them all. But maybe I can identify a favorite once I officially see what they’re all called.

For a small inconspicuous bakery store, the selection is surprisingly good and cheap, and carries a lot of stuff i have not seen in any other chinese bakery, like the pork floss buns.

I live 2 mins away from This place thereofre when ever I’m lazy and don’t wanna cook is come here. I love their service they are always so nice and they respect you, the place pretty small but it is so clean. Compare to other bakeries I’ve been to this is my fav simply because they actually make u feel like you’ve made a good choice by coming here. GGGG8888 customer service
The only reason why Im giving it a 4 star is because I’ve been coming here since 2013 and I simply love their egg tards (on my cheat days)
But they’ve been raising their prices before it was 85 cents and now they are 1.25. It’s still very delicious

I would totally give this place five stars but the downfall is that not all the employees speak English. Its therefore somewhat difficult to ask questions about the cakes/​pastries (not all the food is labeled). So if you see a cake you like try to ask what flavor (inside) it is. My favorite is the Taro bun! Totally, very yummy! The girls are sweet but like I said not all employees speak English well so communication can be difficult. All in all the cakes are light but flavorful, truly a great treat.

I came here to find an alternative to 85 bakery and after reading some reviews I was really expecting a lot. But when I arrived there was really not much variety here. I will not be returning again because the bread is good but nothing special. In my opinion 85 bakery is much better.

The only thing I’ve had here is the cocktail bun (gai mei bao). However, it is presently the best place to get the above mentioned bun (sold in 3’s). It’s kind of oblong, filled with a coconut and sugar mixture, and topped with sesame seeds.
This has been my favorite Chinese pastry since I was a young kid. Year after year, bakery after bakery, has lost it’s quality when it’s comes to my favorite. The bun keeps getting smaller and the filling even less. This lousy trend doesn’t just apply in LA, SF too! So I’m constantly looking for that great gai mei bao.
A couple weeks ago my mother brings me some from a bakery she just found. They were bigger like they used to be. Then I ate one and couldn’t be happier. Just like when I was a kid.
I had to go and get some more! Next time I’ll have to try some other pastries. If they’re anything like my favorite, I’ve found my regular go-​to Chinese bakery!

I’ve come by here a number of times because it is convenient but it is one of the worst bakeries in the area for pastries. I have not, and have no desire to, try out their cakes. The pastries look good but they are usually dry and tasteless. I’ve tried a number of different pastries including the pineapple bread, taro bread, custard bread, etc. and every time, I am disappointed by the lack of flavor and taste.
There are lots of good Asian bakeries in the SGV. In the immediate area, I would go to Momo in Alhambra or Oh My Pan in San Gabriel instead. Even the pastries at Banh Mi Che Cali (which is really not a pastry shop) are better than the ones here.

It pains me to give this place a low rating because I like their pastries, but one day I opted to buy a fruit cake for my mother’s birthday and was sorely disappointed.
1. The cake had canned fruit on top
2. It was not very moist
3. It went bad in two days… wth (I asked specifically if the cake was FRESH, to which they told me yes, obviously not…) DO NOT GET A CAKE HERE! I’m going to have to drive to Porto’s next time…
4. Pineapple bun is delicious
5. Red bean swirl pastry is good
6. Black sesame bun — my husband likes

Typical bakery located in the 626/​SGV that offers pineapple buns, red bean buns, taro loafs, garlic bread, raisin twists, croissants, and these blueberry buns that are a complete knock off of the blueberry bliss that 85 offers. Speaking of knock offs… their marble taro bread is almost an exact replica of the infamous one at 85!
Some standouts that my parents continuously buy week after week include:
Wheat dinner rolls
Coconut bun
Pineapple bun
Shredded pork bun
I mean honestly you’ve been to one JJ, one Diamond, one whatever 626 bakery and you’ve pretty much been to them all. Bottom line is that if you’re in the mood for some carbs and are in the area, or maybe you’re just a couple of doors down at Lee’s getting an iced coffee, making a stop here isn’t a bad idea.
Oh and they also offer stamp cards for those that spend over $ 10, after 10 stamps, you get $ 10 off your next purchase — not bad!

We went here after Noodle Guy lunch.
I got wife cake, egg custard tart, coconut cream bread and hot dog bread. They were all not as good as typical Chinese bakery. I couldn’t even finish my egg custard tart and gave them away. Not sure about the hot dog because I gave it away too.
I kinda liked the aquarium though. Great friendly service.

Simply Splendid isn’t fancy… but it completely makes up for it in fresh baked goods!!!
Loved the blueberry cream bun (better than 85C in my opinion) and the pineapple bun (no custard) was soft, warm and marvelous.
Definitely will be back! Especially since it’s so close to Noodle Boy (or Guy. or whatever).

4.5 Stars!
To each his own, but the day I came here I was overwhelmed with the freshness, softness and taste of the bakery items. Half the things I bought were gone on the drive home. Warm friendly smile and deeeelicious goods.
1. Custard Bun-4.5 Stars. Soft, creamy and delicious.
2. Apple Pastry– The apples were simply delicious and sweetened just
right. The dough was perfectly soft.
3. Strawberry Pastry. Wow. Sweet strawberries encased in a deliciously
soft goodness!
This bakery sits where the old Taipan bakery used to be.
I could suck on sugary sweet bakery all day long and all night long. I have been here once… if second time is as good then this will be my favorite chinese bakery!
