History
Established in 2002.
In 1969, when The Driskill Hotel was threatened with demolition, the Heritage Society of Austin rallied local citizens to save their beloved landmark. Volunteers raised more than $ 500,000 to hold off the wrecking ball primarily by selling $ 10 stocks in the newly formed non-profit Driskill Hotel Corporation.
The Heritage Society also founded the 1886 Lunchroom, successfully operated for 20 years by members stocked with their own family recipes and a fervent pride in the hotel. Known as «Austin’s socializing parlor,» it became the predecessor to the 1886 Café & Bakery, which opened on July 4, 2002.
The café at the busy corner of Sixth and Brazos streets remains the social gathering place for locals and out-of-town guests alike looking for delicious, regional American foods that combine time-honored Texas comfort foods and contemporary fare with the innovative flair of the talented chefs.
Austin’s finest fresh-baked cakes, pies and signature pastries.
