History

Established in 1986.

Established as Mountain Madness Climbing Adventures in 1986, we are the oldest and largest rock climbing guide service in the state of Texas. After 27 years, we’ve changed our name to Texas Climbing Adventures but our experienced staff is still providing the same great rock climbing adventures we always have. As the only AMGA accredited climbing business in the state we are still, just as we always have been, the gold standard in guided rock climbing services.

John D.

Business Owner

After several years of working as a climbing guide with Mountain Madness Climbing Adventures, John took over the company in November of 2013 and changed the name to Texas Climbing Adventures. He is an experienced rock climber with a background in just about every style of climbing there is. John has over a decade of climbing experience and is very active both in the sport and the local climbing scene. When he isn’t taking others out on adventures, John can usually be found somewhere around central Texas doing what he loves to do — rock climbing!

This was my first tim climbing outdoors and I can’t think of a better introduction to real rock climbing! Our instructor, CJ, was super knowledgeable and encouraging and was completely prepared to guide and instruct us. I would highly recommend Texas Climbing Adventures for anyone who wants to get out on the rocks.

I have been indoor rock climbing several times throughout the years and so when my husband’s company — Slalom Consulting — booked an excursion with Texas Climbing Adventures I was so excited! However, then when and I found out it was outdoorn — I was very intimidated because I had never done outdoor before! Our group had about 11 people with a mix of experience ranging from regular outdoor climbers to people with no experience. CJ and Daniel were our guides and they took us to Barton Creek Greenbelt to get started. They met us with all the gear we needed — helmets, harnesses, appropriate shoes, etc. When we arrived on site they already had two ropes up and showed us how to tie the ropes and how to safely communicate with each other while climbing. It was a great experience! CJ and Daniel were very patient with us and very helpful! With their motivation and knowledge we were ALL able to climb up to the top! It was a great experience and I would highly recommend Texas Climbing Adventures. No matter your experience they will make sure you have a fun and safe time!

We had a great day at Enchanted Rock with John. He arrived before we did and had all the gear prepared and loaded up. After a briefing we hiked to the top of the batholith and began our day of rappelling. John was patient, instructive and very pleasant. We had no issues or complaints at all. I would highly recommend Texas Climbing Adventures to anyone.

In January 2016, myself and three friends booked a one day trip out to Enchanted Rock with Texas Climbing Adventures. All of us have experience climbing in the gym, but have little to no experience climbing outdoors. None of us really knew what to expect, but we had the pleasure of booking with the owner/​head guide-​John– and he exceeded all of our expectations in every way imaginable .
John was punctual, with all the gear we needed ready to go before we even arrived at the park and was extremely patient, [literally] showing us the ropes and taking time to share knowledge about how he was setting up the routes so we could gain some climbing knowledge.
Between his excellent sense of humor, great attitude, and plethora of knowledge in the sport John provided an experience that I won’t soon forget. I have no doubt that John, or any of the other guides that work with him, could do the same for anyone looking to get into some Texas Hill Country climbing.
Already planning the next trip as soon as possible.

I booked my first ever rock climbing adventure with John for my birthday this past October. From my first online inquiry to my last belay communication was easy and clear. He met us out at Reimers Ranch and was already set up and ready to go at 8am. Throughout the tour we progressed in climbing difficulty and John was great at giving tips, moral support and a good laugh. I would absolutely recommend Texas Climbing Adventures to anyone who wants to have a fun afternoon in the Texas Hill Country climbing up rocks.

My husband and I have only gone rock climbing in a gym. We were ready to go rock climbing ‘for real’ — but I didn’t want to try on my own. I called to ask a few questions. Texas Climbing Adventures answered my call and emailed questions quickly and completely, so we booked a trip.
We chose Reimers Ranch because it was more like the holds at a gym. It was one of the most fun adventures I’ve had! I’m not a big risk taker. John’s teaching style was simple, and made me feel confident. In our group we had beginners and more experienced climbers — John found routes that challenged us all. It was a great time, and we will be climbing with Texas Climbing Adventures again… this time Enchanted Rock!

My daughter hosted some friends for a day of climbing at Enchanted Rock for her 13th birthday. We spent the night at ER using a reservation set-​up by Texas Climbing Adventures.
TCA supplied everything we needed to climb, shoes, harnesses, helmets and expertise.
My daughter, her friends and the dads had a great time. Our guide, John, started us out with some easy climbs to help us get used to the harnesses, ropes and coming shoes.
John had already set up all the climbs before the day started, so once we hiked in, we were climbing in 30 minutes.
We progressed to some longer climbs that were still challenging but very doable.
We finished the day with a 40 foot rappel.
John was great with the kids and everyone had an amazing time.

Saturday we had a chance to go rock climbing with Texas Climbing Adventures and we had a fantastic day! Four families, all beginners met at the parking lot of Reimer Ranch. We were fitted with gear, did a quick hike to the area, and provided great instruction on what we needed to know to be safe and have fun. MIke Klien was our lead guide. Mike was thorough, safety minded, patient, friendly and fun — all the things you need in a great climbing coach. We can’t wait to schedule another outing with TCA. Thanks for the great memories!

I’m 42.
I’m fit, but fat.
My girlfriend, who is fitter and way, way leaner than I, wanted to try climbing after having a great outdoor vacation in Colorado.
We booked a day trip to Barton Creek Greenbelt with TCA and our guide, Mike. (He brought along his faithful assistant, Indie the mutt, who was really a great member of the climbing party.
Mike was a perfect non-​anxious presence. He was so, so patient with our newbie jitters and remedial climbing needs. When it was time to climb, he was patient, helpful and encouraging. I really got scared a couple of times, but Mike was really calming and encouraging. I couldn’t get past one crux because I was over-​thinking it, and he just let me down and try another route.
At the end of the day, we felt really accomplished and very, very tired. One thing is for sure: we are planning to start training to climb again. It was such a great day that we had dinner with Mike and Indie afterward. It was worth the drive from DFW!
If you want to try climbing and you are in Texas, this is the company to make it happen with you!

I have used TCA twice and both times I could not have been happier. The first time was a two day women’s course at Enchanted Rock. Jennifer was our instructor and I cannot say enough great things about her. She was extremely knowledgeable and patient, but she was also very personable and made things really fun.
The second time myself and two others used TCA for a semi-​private guided day climb with John. Like all the other reviews read he was fantastic. He had some routes set up prior to our arrival so we got to climbing in no time. John was a great teacher and an all around awesome guy. We are already booking our next climb with John.
I would recommend TCA to anyone looking to get outdoors and try some climbing!

This was our first ever climbing experience and it was a blast. Who knew we had it in us! John met our family of four including our 14 and 10 year old girls at Milton Reimer Ranch for a day of climbing. He supplied all the equipment for the day and had all the ropes set up and ready to go for our adventure. We took it at our own pace with 4 different top rope climbs at different levels of difficulty. We learned so much about rock climbing and can’t wait to do it again! John is a great instructor and extremely patient. Milton Reimer Ranch was a beautiful background for an awesome day of adventure.

This was my first time doing any type of outdoor climbing. John, Lucas and Janet made sure that we were comfortable and at ease the entire time from the hike up to the climbing. They explained all of the equipment and safety measures and exactly what we were going to be doing at every step of the way. The guides are always what make good trip a great trip and these guys definitely made it a great one!

I booked a two day guided climb in the Austin area as a Christmas present for me and my 11 year old son and it was a great trip! John was a fantastic teacher and very professional as well as a really nice guy. You never know what you are going to get with an outdoor guide service, so I was very impressed when we showed up at our scheduled meet time at Reimer Ranch and John had already been there for at least an hour and a half getting ready for us. He had our shoes, helmets, and harnesses ready to go and had already set three different top ropes for us to get started on. Our second day began the same way at the Seismic Wall with John having already set some top ropes for us and had everything ready to go when we showed up. We made it through quite a few routes and John was always happy to scramble up and set new routes for us.
We were both first-​time climbers and have already been to an indoor climbing gym since we returned home because of the great time that we had with John. We are hooked now and I fully intend to use Texas Climbing Adventures for more trips when we have a chance. We are especially looking forward to checking out their Enchanted Rock trip. My wife probably wouldn’t let us go without her on that one, so it will probably be the four of us for that one. I truly can’t say enough good things about our trip. It was a special time with my son that I will never forget and I thoroughly enjoyed John being a part of it.
