History

Established in 1952.

Contemporary Dental was started in the 1950’s by Dr. Tony Brown. In 1985, Dr. Phil Nauert purchased the practice and began turning it into the comprehensive, quality care, facility that it is today. Dr. Nauert brought Dr. Steven Vaughan on as his associate in 2005 and they became partners in 2008. Today they have a family and cosmetic dental practice that offers the full range of dental treatments to their patients.

Business Owner

Dr. Steven Vaughan received his doctorate of dental surgery in 2004 from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio after completing his undergraduate degree at Rice University in Houston.

He followed his predoctoral education with an AEGD residency at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital, gaining advanced training in implant dentistry, full mouth reconstructions, and Invisalign.

Dr. Vaughan also teaches two days per week at the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston.

Dr. Phil Nauert received his doctorate in dentistry from the University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio in 1983. He has stayed current on the changes in the field of dentistry, attending all levels of the prestigious L.D. Pankey Institute of Continuing Dental Education, well-​known for its intense and demanding continuing education programs for dentists.

Both doctors are members of organized dentistry, value lifelong learning and have obtained Fellowship Status in the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Nauert has been my dentist for over four years now, and I can honestly say he is by far my favorite dentist. Dr. Nauert and his entire staff are always very welcoming, a pleasure to talk to, and most importantly they excel at their jobs. He has never tried to push any unnecessary procedures like some of my former dentists. I will continue to visit Dr. Nauert as long as I live in Houston.

Let me begin by saying that, over the years, I have been to many different dentists, and have never felt compelled to stick with any of them. When I moved to Houston in 2010, I did not go about finding one locally and let my regular appointments take a back burner. Then, in 2015, something awful happened: I was eating dinner and bit on something very hard — MY TOOTH! Of course, I was naturally freaked out. The next morning, I set about trying to get in to see a dentist ASAP — no easy feat when you have not established care with anyone! Dr. Nauert’s office found a way to work me into their schedule the very next day.
From day one, Dr. Nauert was wonderful. He is kind, funny, and (most importantly), knowledgeable and skilled. The same can be said of everyone who works in his office. Every time I visit, my experience is top notch. My son also goes to Dr. Nauert and, just recently, I convinced my husband to begin going as well. While that may not seem like a big deal, my husband had never been to a dentist *in his life* and was pretty uneasy about it. Thanks to Dr. Nauert and the staff at Contemporary Dental, my husband is now also a fan of going to the dentist (and of his super-​clean teeth)!
Every cent we have spent at this dental office has been worth it. We plan to continue visiting Dr. Nauert for our dental care until he retires (unless we move out of the Houston area before that happens).

I’ve been a patient of this practice for almost 3 years. I can’t imagine going to anyone else. Dr. Nauert is my pain-​free dentist. He is an amazing dentist. I have the worst teeth in the world, and he has such a gentle technique, along with his being very experienced. His staff is the icing on the cake.

They never filed with my insurance when I got a routine cleaning last year. I gave them my insurance card at the time of service and they now have no record of it. They’re trying to charge me almost $ 300 before they ever bothered telling me they didn’t have my insurance records on file. This is a nightmare.

Unfortunately, as much as I wish I could say otherwise because everyone here is so amazingly nice, the dental work I had here did not hold up and was not done properly to begin with per my endodontist and new dentist.
A fourth canal was completely missed on my original root canal performed at Contemporary Dental and allowed the tooth to become necrotic over the past few years. An incredibly painful pulp stone was also missed, but was spotted under proper magnification by my endodontist.
ALL dental patients should know that it is not common practice for dentists to perform root canals in their offices. You should always see an endodontist as it is a delicate procedure requiring great skill to be done properly. In my case, the canals were not adequately widened, cleaned and filled. Contemporary Dental did not have the proper equipment to ensure adequate removal of the nerve tissue. Additionally, the crown provided was never the correct shape or fit, also causing undue pain and decay in the adjoining tooth.
I think part of what makes a quality dental experience is the longevity of the work. The numerous errors in procedure caused me a great deal of pain and discomfort.

Dr. Steven is the best. I have found them completely respectful of my time and they get me in and out FAST. They have never tried to «upsell» me anything and completely care about my dental health. I’m never going anywhere but here!

Charges doubled after treatment. Other reviewers/​patients have also mentioned being quoted one out-​of-​pocket fee, then getting charged a couple hundred dollars more later. In my case, when trying to decide if I wanted the treatment I was told I would pay $ 153 out of pocket. This is also what they charged me (and I paid) upon leaving the appointment. Months later, I was told I actually had owed them $ 306. When asked why I had not been quoted and charged the full out-​of-​pocket sum (since my insurance copay was exactly what their computer had apparently estimated at the time), the office manager said she was not accountable for past employees’ actions. Since I have witnessed high administrative turn-​over in the 4 months I have been going to this dentist, I do not feel that this practice can be trusted financially.

If I could give them a 0, I would. My wife went there recently for a paid dental checkup & free Invisalign evaluation. The experience has been ongoing and horrible. She was told in no uncertain terms that a particular part of her checkup would be no charge (by an administrative staff member and directly by the doctor). Months later she was informed that there would be a hefty charge, after all – that she was given the wrong information at the time and that they didn’t consider this to be their problem. The administrative staff has been incredibly rude and condescending, and thus far have been successful in blocking all attempts to contact the doctor directly. One lady outright shouted at my wife on the phone. Unprofessional does not begin to describe it. When my wife decided to simply seek treatment elsewhere after her experience, they threatened to block any release of her information to any other clinics/​dentists. They have been completely uninterested in facilitating any type of resolution.
There are plenty of great places in Houston. Go find one of them. Sure, maybe you get lucky here and are fine, but it’s not worth rolling the dice. Take your business elsewhere, because if they do make a mistake (self-​admitted, their mistake!), it will be you paying the price, both literally and figuratively.
0/​10, by far the worst experience (and the only negative overall experience, really) my wife or I has ever had with any medical or dental practice.

I would like to preface this review by saying the dental service we received was good.
However, if you plan on using insurance I would be weary due to their misleading practices and unwillingness to correct past errors. Prior to setting up our first appointment my wife called in and asked if they were in network and if we would have any out-​of-​pocket expense. After being told that there would be no out-​of-​pocket expense, we proceeded to visit the dentist on three occasions over the next six months. At each visit we were told there was no additional cost and we received no bills to state otherwise. Over a year after our first visit we received a past due notice for several hundred dollars.
After calling several times and getting a portion of the bill removed, they were still unwilling to fix admitted mistakes made by «an office manager who no longer works here.»
If you have dental insurance for the purpose of covering routine visits and don’t like getting surprise bills years later (regardless of what you’re told upfront), I would recommend trying a different dentist.

I can’t believe haven’t reviewed this place yet. By far one of the kindest and most experienced dental staff I have ever encountered. I’m terrified of dentists but not when I go here.
I totally sound like an ad right now, lol.
Anyway, I got veneers done on my two front teeth + laser whitening by Dr. Vaughan. He’s a doctor that truly cares about the well being of his patients and not to make an extra dime off of them. I wish I could share a before and after picture, but I’ll just share a cropped photo that serves the purpose of showing my teeth well enough to get the point across. To give you an idea of what they looked like before, I had one dead tooth that was shorter than my other front tooth and was turning grey from a botched root canal I got done at a dentist’s office in Ukraine. And I had a pretty ugly gap that I was also very insecure about.

Not respectful of patient’s time. Recently moved to TX and needed a dentist. Chose this place based on Unilocal reviews and the location. So far, the staff is friendly and competent but this is not the place to go if you have time constraints. On my last two visits, I arrived 5 minutes early and spent an hour waiting to be seen. After being greeted, seated, and prepped, I have spent between 30 and 50 minutes waiting for each stage that requires my dentist. The team does a good job, but the wasted time is not practical for patients who are employed.

I give five star for the dentist. Dr. Steven is a great he fixed my dad’s teeth while he is sleeping. No Pain AT ALL .the receptionist dealt with me as a thief ! My dad has cancer so every time I’ve to hold his hand to help him. As most of cancer patient he has cold intolerance so he like to wait for me in the car while I’m paying. Instead of helping me with the door they are shouting: hey comeback and pay although I left my mobiles on the desk but What really hurts that one white guy forgot his wallet in the car and no asked him to comeback !.

My experience with Contemporary Dental has been good from the get go. They are customer service oriented. I called early morning to schedule an appointment and got one that same morning with Dr. Vaughan. My porcelain crown fell off the night before and needed replacing since it broke. By mid afternoon, I had a Colgate smile. The turnaround time was insane! Dr. Vaughan truly knows the art of cosmetic dentistry. He is very efficient and does not compromise quality at all. Dana, one of the techs is so nice. She made sure I was comfortable from beginning to end. She always had a smile! I recently had a cleaning with Patty, a hygienist, and feel happy about the outcome. There was a little miscommunication but they quickly took care of it. Again, this practice is all about customer service. They value their customers. Love the location. Needless to say, I will be returning.

Both Dr. Vaughan and Dr. Nauert our great! My regular dentist is Dr. Vaughan, but Dr. Naurert sees me whenever he isn’t in. All the staff at Contemporary are friendly, professional, thorough and gentle.

I changed my dentist after my first visit to Contemporary Dental, which was highly recommended by JB back then. Their receptionist, Sylvia is bubbly and friendly. Dr. Vaughn is knowledgeable and make you feel like you are his friend rather than one of his patients.
Recently my 9th front tooth chipped. Since I was out of town for weeks, I randomly went to a dentist to get an evaluation how serious it was. I have second thought after making my appointment as I don’t think any dentist will do a better job than Dr. Vaughn. Luckily I decided to wait and guess what? My front tooth is fixed beautifully and I can grin with ease;) Oh yes, Patty, the hygienist is wonderful too.
Although CD is out of network and I know I have to pay more for my dental care, but it is worth it. Most important thing is that they genuinely care about your dental and will only do necessary procedure as needed.
