Business Owner

EL CERRITO Tim Hassler used to have a fruitful career in the biotech industry, but when his brother suggested they join forces in the HVAC field, he knew it was a good opportunity. «I was working as a regional manager for a service company in the biotech field,» he recounts. «My brother, Mike, founded Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning in 1999 and the business was growing a lot, so we began talking about partnering up. Not only did it offer a chance for me to progress from management to ownership, I was also excited to get into an industry that focused on improving home performance.»

Today, as CFO of Hassler Heating & Air Conditioning, Tim says his past management experience comes into play in the company’s day-​to-​day operations. There are a lot of logistical challenges. Fortunately, that happens to be one of my strengths, so I enjoy coordinating Projects and taking care of customers needs.

I chose Hassler HVAC after talking to a few HVAC & insulation contractors about upgrading my house’s insulation, heating, and water heater. These guys looked at the whole picture, gave great options & suggestions, had fair prices, and were always professional. They squeezed a whole lot of equipment into a tiny attic without a single complaint. They also helped with all of the energy-​saving rebates. The estimator, installers, and service guys have been great — thanks to Alex, Robert, Keith, Andy, Max, Juan, David, Chris, et al.

About 3 – 4 years ago, Hassler did a great replacing the furnace in our circa 1936 home — which included some electrical work, placing of cement pad under the house, as well as replacing all the old ducts, and adding a few new ducts and vents. It has run like a dream ever since, no issues at all, and been very energy efficient. A few days ago technician CHRIS came to give it a check up and change the filter to find all systems go. Chris was on time, polite, and thorough. Highly recommend.

Hassler Heating and Air have doing excellent routine maintenance on our unit for years. This year we had a problem and them came promptly and fixed the air conditioning quickly. Thank heaven as Antioch reached highs of 100 degrees. We will continue to use them. Derrick who works in the Antioch –Contra Costa area has helped out with useful ideas on our unit.

Even if you know the part you need for a furnace repair, they will not give a price estimate for the repair (assuming that is the part you need) until you pay them more than $ 100 to send someone over. Other companies I called were much more straightforward.

Chris came by today to do an inspection.
He was on-​time, polite, and offered to put on shoe booties!
He ended up doing unscheduled work the same day which was great and explained everything thoroughly.
I plan to continue using Hassler and was very pleased with all aspects of the service.

Paul came out today to check our AC which had stopped working. He was detained due to the previous job, but said he would still come out, even though it was almost 7:00 pm. He seemed very knowledgeable & thankfully was able to get things working.
We have used another company in the past & in fact they were the ones who had installed our AC. But because of the service we received yesterday, I think we will use Hassler fo any future heating & AC needs!

Just completed first annual inspection. Chris was professional, responsive, timely, and easy to work with.
I really like the annual maintenance program. No worrying about changing a filter or keeping this important piece of equipment running smoothly… plus an extended warranty.
Oh and of course, my installation last year went very smoothly. They handled everything including the City inspection, and my dual zone, low energy system works great.

After my post on Unilocal,Alicia from Hassler HVAC got in touch with me via email. She was very gracious in her response saying:
You make valid points. Here’s what I was able to ascertain:
· You are absolutely right-​if our clients move forward with the recommended «Nest» repairs, the service charge should be credited. I shared this with the rest of the staff-​for future reference.
· It would be best for our technicians to ask our clients if they can put a sticker on the equipment-​especially if we have not provided a service.
· Needing a common wire to run the Nest properly is very common and unfortunately not communicated enough prior to purchasing. This morning we decided to move forward with offering a special Nest referral discount (for those who have purchased the Nest) as to make it more cost effective for our clients.
Alicia has since offered to refund the Service Call fees. As someone that is in the service business I sincerely appreciate the very quick response and resolution. This would make me change my mind and do future business with Hassler. Thank you Alicia

to replace some ducting. And then he came back today and completed the job.

We have relied on Hassler Heating and Air-​conditioning at 3 separate properties. The services they have provided have been both large (replacing central heating system and ducts, replacing floor furnace in old Victorian) and small, i.e., rewrapping and reinforcing our ducts in basement. All their work and service has been outstanding. Most recently, we needed Hassler’s help with our cat… Yes, our anxious Cat who sleeps in the basement and uses our heating ducts as a playground to gain access to the unfinished side of the basement. Paul Burke came out and devised an ingenious, esthetically attractive and cost effective solution to keep the cat from accessing and ripping apart the newly rewrapped ducts. Bottom line: Hassler Heating rocks for any and all of your heating, air-​conditioning, duct and mischievous cat needs.

This review is for our quote that we received. We had Hassler come out and do a quote for central heating. Total quote for heating unit and duct work (easy install since we have a full size attic). price was over $ 25 000. If we wanted all the other extras like attic insulation, temp zone control, wall insulation that they were recommending to receive the Up To $ 6500 home energy credit, Quote was close to $ 50,000. CRAZY… most people here say they are affordable? DID YOU GET A SECOND QUOTE? I called them again to just replace a wall furnace since cost was too high, I ended up leaving a message since the guy I was directed too was busy. No return calls.
Anyway I did, but another reputable company. We ended up paying $ 11 500 for heating and duct work. Out heating unit is top of the line. it heats up the house in 5 minutes.

We needed asbestos remediation and a new heater/​duct system and we upgraded our house to be energy efficient and they are really helping us make a good decision. Hassler has been very helpful and reasonably priced with various HVAC-​related tasks — installing a modern thermostat which takes full advantage of my furnace’s functionality, testing and optimizing the heating system for the correct pressure and fan settings, and even installing a gas line for my grill.

After researching and getting quotes we decided Hassler was the best option for new furnace and ducts.
They are the epitome of professionalism and quality. They obviously go above and beyond in training their employees. They go above and beyond with regards to communication. One small example is that in all of their emails, they list a cell phone number and pick up when you call!
For our specific job, Mariano, Kolade and Abraham were awesome. they were respectful, kind, very clear in their explanation of the work they were doing and what they needed to do next.
I am sure someone can find cheaper options out there, but I’m sure no one can find a better small business to go with for their heating.
While not finished 100% I’m confident to post this review now– Thanks Hassler team, this was a great job.

In less than a year, a second HVAC system in a second home! Hassler arranged for the energy inspection, asbestos remediation and brought in a marvelous heater/​ducting so that within 3 days we had heat. This week, they came and finished the details on the ducts and installed the AC unit and electrical for it. I can’t tell you how friendly, courteous and professional the crew was this time, too. The weather didn’t cooperate — RAIN! FOG! COLD! — so they’ll be back in the near future to charge the AC.
Sarn, Chi, and Mariano were simply an amazing and happy crew. They worked hard, did clean up, answered questions and were friendly and humorous. Big smile here in my cozy, warm house!

Well, I didn’t review when they first installed our heater equipment, and I should have. Their employees who manage the installation are hours late and unapologetic. Work is so-​so.
Since then, we had one part of the equipment fail and require replacement. And twice I have scheduled service to have them no show. Think twice about them. If it were once, I could forget. But it has been 5 – 6 times of late arrival or not showing up at all. You would do better by looking elsewhere for heater installation and maintenance.

It was a dark and stormy night… and we were without heat in December (don’t laugh, Oakland can get cold… sometimes…okay, not really but it still sucked). These folks had to schedule our estimate two weeks after the four other bids I got. I’m thankful I waited! We got, not the best price, but a good price, and I think darned good service.
Theses guys have gone above and beyond, they have. They have been professional, courteous, and good at checking in to let me know what’s going on and where. They took care of little things they didn’t have to, they pushed for a stellar customer service offerings and I would say they achieved it!
We had a totally separate issue with a company also doing work, and it was Hassler that stepped up to the plate and took on an extra bit of their work to help me getting the heating and our new fireplace up and working.

Wishing I could give four and a half stars. Yes, I’m a fan, and yes I do and will recommend this company. But, mind the details yourself and check in on any specifics you may ask for if doing installation.
Keep an eye on:
As you can imagine there are a lot of moving parts to their process, and from my experience and that of my neighbor who has used them for a much larger job, details can be lost. There were a few things that just didn’t get followed up on or details were not relayed between the initial estimator, project managers, office staff, etc. They don’t seem to write things down, so have your own list to review with each person in the process to help keep the lines smooth.

These guys are great and professional. Starting with the fact that they have a dedicated and knowledgable receptionist who immediately answers calls. I called to schedule an appointment for a heater repair during a recent cold snap and she was able to immediately tell me when the next available appointment would be and then how long a wait time it would be until the service scheduling technician could take my call (apologizing for the likely few minute hold time because of the busy season.
Then at the day of the appointment the heating technician Chris was EXTREMELY courteous and knowledgable. He put on show covers before entering our home, listened patiently while I explained the symptoms and then happily climbed under our house into the 2′ crawl space.
Chris diagnosed the problem in about 15 minutes (calling me from under the house to tell me what he found, the solution and asking me to cycle the system back on again) and then he waited under the house for another 15 minutes to ensure the system was cycling properly.
It’s working great now and we’re warm.
Only reason for deducting a star is also two suggestions to the company: (1) I had replied to a confirmation email with a non-​essential question that was never replied to and (2) a re-​confirmation email the day of or day before would be appreciated (I called the company at the start of the scheduling window to confirm and the aforementioned very helpful receptionist confirmed that I was on the books and had Chris give me a call when he was enroute — but a proactive notification would be appreciated).

Set up annual inspection and service for two heating units. One in Richmond and one across the bridge in Marin. They sent Chris over to do both.
He arrived within the allotted window, was very courteous, put on his booties and got to work. One heater was in the attic so he had to climb up and work in a small space there. The second was in a large storage area and much easier to get to.
While he was there he tested the while system and offered to install new filters. I already took care of that so no need for him to do it.
He was done within about 30 minutes of the first unit and then we both drove to Marin to have the second one looked at. It also took about 30 minutes.
Everything checked out fine and there were no additional charges. Thank you Chris. Yippee!
