History

Established in 2010.

I have been cooking for family and friends for years and everyone always told me I should cook professionally. This year I decided it was time to reinvent myself and now that’s what I’m doing. I love to cook, and I believe sharing a meal with your family or friends is the heart and soul of life. Children who eat meals with their families do better in school. A dinner table is not all that different from an altar, the food is presented to savor, enjoy and share. I hope the meals I provide will satisfy you and bring you together with your loved ones.

I am a Berkeley girl and have been cooking for friends and family for many years. I turned my cooking and baking skills into a dinner delivery and pie baking service which I call One Less Thing. I love to cook CA style with fresh local ingredients in season. I am inspired by many bloggers, own tons of cookbooks and spend hours testing recipes. We count One Less Thing as a critical item in the ‘working parents’ tool box. Susan’s home cooked meals are delicious, healthy, and complete — each meal comes with some kind of veggie side dish or salad, often with a bread as well. The price ends up being comparable to any other of the popular meal delivery services (considering that one ‘order’ from One Less Thing feeds my family of 4). There are a variety of options for ordering and paying, and coming home to a freshly made meal in re-​usable containers really can’t be beat. With some budget /​life changes we haven’t been able to order any meals in a few months, but I was led to write this review because we have a busy few weeks coming up, and my first thought was, «We’ll have to get some meals from One Less Thing!».

I live in Rhode Island and have a friend in Berkeley who is undergoing chemo. I wanted to sign up to send a meal for her family but didn’t want to just send pizza. I found One Less Thing and was impressed and comfortable from the start. Susan responds to email very quickly, answers questions clearly and thoughtfully. Her menus are interesting, well-​detailed and varied, and full of local ingredients. Through the whole process, Susan communicated helpfully and promptly. She delivered the meal (including a gorgeous pie that she sent me a picture of!) last night and I heard that my friend, returning from her short haircut in anticipation of losing her hair, loved it! I’m so grateful that Susan allowed me to participate in my friend’s recovery even if I can’t be there myself.
I had twins almost two years ago, and when one of the girls had to stay in the NICU for a month while I commuted between home and hospital with her sister and my 4 year old son and husband, we relied on the regular home-​cooked meals from my friends to feel support, love and nutrition. The service Susan provides allows people to deliver this support even from far away. I’m so grateful to have found her!

I work. I have a toddler. At the end of a hectic day, nothing better than a package of home cooked food waiting on your doorstep. Tasty, fresh, and more interesting than anything I would cook. Good bye frozen food and take out. See you on the weekend, cookbooks.

I am a busy working mom. Susan, of One Less Thing, makes my life possible. She is flexible and easy to work with. Her food is super yummy. We are a low-​carb vegetarian family, and she cheerfully deals with our eating requirements. She also always has meat options. I order Susan’s meals about 4 — 5 days each week. I love that I don’t have to worry about what’s for dinner, and that I get to spend more time with my husband and daughter each day (instead of cooking). I recommend Susan often to friends and neighbors.

I was sitting here in Portland trying to think of a way to thank some people I know in Berkeley, and I didn’t like the idea of sending the traditional flowers since they are not eco friendly and useless to boot. I wondered what I would like, and – of course — came up with an idea to send a homemade pie to them. Who doesn’t like a homemade pie?
But how? Used Unilocal,and voila! Next thing I knew I was emailing Susan in Berekley and setting up a delivery of a freshly baked caramel apple pie. Very quick, very reasonable, very yummy (according to them)! Thanks, Susan!

I’ll do an awful lot for free food, so when I heard that my department was going to be hosting a seminar, and it was going to be catered, I decided i was in, then and there. Sure the speaker kind of sucked, and their research was somewhat suspect, but the food was amazing. One Less Things are fantastic, the crusts were all flakey and tender, with a rich butteriness that I have yet to archive in my wildest baking dreams.
I don’t know why my department has had such bad catering in the past, but I’m glad they have finally learned their lesson. I look foreword to sitting through many more sub-​par research seminars while shoveling delicious pie into my mouth.

Susan’s specialty is in preparing meals that are delicious and nourishing. Her weekly menus offer something for everyone — from chicken pot pies to gourmet savory tarts to creative vegetarian meals. This is a great service for people who get too busy to cook but who are picky «foodies» like me. Its been a lifesaver!
