BRIX Wine Shop

Great selection. But way too over-​priced.
I used to frequent this store because they’re always helpful and knowledgeable, but later I found out that I was paying almost 20% more than how much I would’ve paid at other wine stores in the area. This was very disappointing because I live very close by and used to be a huge fan of this store. :(

Beware…, prices maybe extremely inflated. Recently I was looking for a gift and decided to buy a high end bottle of Champagne. The sales person appeared very knowledgeable and I trusted her, unfortunately a big mistake.
The gift was well received but later I looked up the Champagne on line and I could have purchased the bottle for less than half what I paid for it at Brix. This would have saved me over $ 100.
Very disappointing… I should have done my own research before purchasing the Champagne, but fell into the trap of trusting the sales person.

We popped into Brix one afternoon to get some wine for a party. We were greeted by two friendly staff who gave us some samples and helped us find what we needed. Albeit pricey, a great place to buy wine!

The lady working upsold me in a second by saying that my t-​shirt reminded her of a bottle label. Done.
Mostly wine, but they do have some beer in the back left corner. The people working seem to know their stuff (I saw her help other people while I looked around).
I want to give it 4 stars at it all seemed a bit much for a liquor store (that IS what it is), but it does focus on wine AND it is in the south end, so it is what it is and it’s beautiful inside.
They have wine tastings which I got a list of and have been meaning to go back for but something always comes up!

Stopped into this quaint nice little shop in order to pickup a couple good bottles for a seder I was attending. The layout was a bit confusing, but i was greeted by a nice woman who explained the layout. They had some unique and interesting bottles, the prices are slightly higher, but the service and staff were very personable. Not a place I’d come to buy 15 bottles of wine, but a good spot to grab a nice bottle for a party or a nice dinner at home if you are local. I noticed this was a mini chain in the area.

I’ve been told that one thing you need in life is a good mechanic. Well, I’m not much of a driver, but I am a heck of a drinker. So, I say you need a good wine store. Brix is that wine store. Only thing is, they’re a great wine store.
Why? Three reasons: 1) Every wine they stock is good. You cannot go wrong with a bottle you pick up at Brix. 2) They give amazing liquor recommendations. I joke that I have my husband fooled — he thinks I have flawless taste in choosing whiskeys. Truth is, I just go to Brix and ask. 3) They are happy to special order for you.
I’ve actually got a fourth and a fifth reason: 4) They have great tastings; and 5) They have very affordable wines and are perfectly willing to give you recommendations that are less expensive than what you are willing to spend, even.
Also, a story: I carefully researched a wine that I wanted to buy as a gift. I checked out wine rankings and wanted to get a very specific wine as a gift. Well, I went to Brix and I was tired, cold, and just didn’t care anymore. So, I asked for a recommendation. They suggested two wines: one was less expensive than what I was planning to pay with my well-​researched bottle and one was spot on. I bought the spot on one — got home, looked at my notes: they had recommended the wine that I had carefully researched. The exact wine. They are awesome. Go here.

I’m sure this place deserves 5 stars but the relationship I have w it (i.e go in for a bottle here and there) is pretty limited. It’s a cool place… boutique-y…and the staff seems knowledgeable. I look forward to making more money and enjoying more of what BRIX has to offer. I should try one of these wine tasting they offer and I’ve heard so much about.

Brix is beautiful. The lighting, the shelves, the floor. The store is very inviting, the employees maybe not quite as much, but they are very helpful. Just a touch snooty. A few times I have come in asking for a little advice on wine and the employees always offer awesome suggestions once I ask. For Christmas, my department collected money to buy some booze for our bosses, so I went to Brix looking for a cabernet and a tequila to fit into a $ 50 budget. The gal working at the time helped me pick out my gifts and didn’t judge my budget, then packed the bottles into bags with tissue paper.
Brix is a great place to get advice on wine or a gift.

Brix is absolutely gorgeous. I love, love, LOVE the space and setup of this wine shop. If I could make my living room look like Brix, I’d be happy. And I’d be a wine-​o.
I wasn’t overly thrilled by the service I received in here (she seemed a little too know-​it-​all and made me feel inadequate) but I appreciated how she gave me a tour of the store and helped me find what I was looking for.
The prices? Well, if I were super rich I’d shop here. For now I’ll be shopping here on special occasions and getting my wine at the Emporium or at Georgiana’s because Brix breaks the bank a bit. But, I’d definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking for an upscale wine shop.

Brix is a gem of a store. Their selection is amazing, offering some very exclusive selections along with some cheaper but still quality surprises here and there. True, the staff are a little distant at first, but once you show your interest (and the fact that you’re not just looking around for fun), they really open up and pour forth both knowledge and advice that really show they know what they’re talking about. I had them find a very limited wine for me recently, and they did the job very well. The wines range all over the pricing chart, so do have a firm idea of how much you want to spend. All in all, a very distinct and professional wine shop.

Sure, they have a great wine and liquor selection, but no amount of good alcohol warrants condescending service. I really think this applies to one or two employees in particular, but I hope something does something about it.
I’ve been in here several times, sometimes perusing and something purchasing. The younger guy who works there makes you feel like buying a cheap bottle of everyday wine makes you an idiot with no class or sophistication. No one needs to be that erudite.

I was going to let this go, and not write a review, having decided a while ago that, for me, Brix simply isn’t the kind of business I want to patronize when there are others behaving more decently (even if the others aren’t as convenient, as Brix is right next door.) But I feel the need to, as a warning, and I want to do it as well on behalf of my friend, whose purchase of a gift certificate from them definitely DID NOT have the intended effect.
As I say, we live next door, and began going to Brix as soon as they opened. The owners/​staff were never warm and fuzzy, but the wine selection was good for a relatively small shop, even if not in price range. A good friend and colleague (I had a business in the area, too) got me a gift certificate one year as a birthday gift. It took me two years to actually think to take the gift certificate with me and redeem it – I just was always going on my way to or from something and didn’t have it with me. They gave me such attitude, and at first weren’t going to accept it, and after having to talk to both owners and the original staffer who looked at me like I had two heads, I finally got out of there (of course, having spent more than the value of the gift certificate) because one owner said to the other «Just take it so he’ll go.» It was baffling. Out the window went the modicum of friendliness they had mustered up because we were regulars, it made no sense too because they put no expiration date on it to begin with, and they had zero interest in the law around such things in Massachusetts. They were just pissed that I was redeeming something they probably spent the incoming cash on long ago.
Way to ruin a birthday present, Brix.
Seriously, do what you want for your own wine needs, but don’t do that to a friend and in the process completely derail your best efforts to give a thoughtful gift. If you need gift-​giving ideas, message me – I know of tons of really great businesses to patronize and turn your friends on to.

Being a pretty frequent customer of the Broad St BRIX, I was surprised to be treated a bit poorly at the South End location. I stopped by for a wine tasting and to pick up a few bottles and was given some pretty harsh attitude. A young guy walking into the store with a gym bag over his shoulder might not scream «serve me» but it doesn’t mean ignore him and refuse to let him put his bag down to grab the wine he came for.
I’ve really liked what BRIX has tried to do and for a while I thought the emails with specials and announcements were great. It’s gotten to the point where it’s silly.
Latest email: «$ 55 Pinot Noir for $ 30… Really!» I open it up, intrigued, and see a rave review of a wine bursting with flavor which they will take advance orders of at the special price of $ 29.99. I take a look around and find a few other stores selling this for $ 22 — $ 24. How is $ 29.99 a «special price»?

I’ve been a regular customer of Brix and live the in the neighborhood. I think it’s a great store. I’ve read all the reviews and have some thoughts. First of all they have a great selection of wine, great labels you know (and are pretty expensive) and many unknown labels that range down to $ 12 or so for a bottle. This is a place you go when you are looking to spend at least $ 12/​bottle on wine and preferably up to the $ 20 range. You can get very good wines here in that price range.
They also have a great selection of bourbon which is a favorite of mine. You can try some new very good ones for under $ 30 but easily spend $ 100 if you can afford it.
On the «service» side I think the people there are generally very good. But remember they are people not robots. Some are more or less outgoing. Some know wine better than the hard stuff or vice versa. If you talk to them an be honest I don’t think you will ever be disappointed.
Lastly on the «events» they are promotional when they are free (hello!?!) which means the sponsor may be promoting something. In general I find the people they have in are worth seeing although in most cases I don’t buy what they are there to promote.
This is certainly a store to have on your list of regular stops in the south end if you enjoy wine or bourbon.

Lovely, upscale wine shop with helpful staff and classy presentation of the many bottles that they have available. Bought two reds from them recently for a get-​together and they complimented our dishes and desserts quite nicely.

I only like it because it’s here. There are only a handful of places to buy wine here in Boston without getting completely ripped off.
I do like the style of this place, and they have all price ranges of wine to choose from. Not a HUGE selection, but space is money here in good ol’ Boston.
You know what drives me nuts? Their free «wine tastings» every week which ARE. NOT. WINE.
SOME of their wine tastings are wine — but sometimes you will go in and it’s really just a represenative pushing a new liquor you’ve never heard of. It’s like being sucked into a mini infomercial. UGH. So disappointing, especially when you had your heart set on trying some new red…

Brix is a great upscale wine & liquor shop, one of my favorite in the city. It’s the kind of shop where I’ll walk in and bypass the wine on the shelves. The clerk will greet me and we’ll chat for a few minutes. Then I’ll tell him how I’m feeling or what I’m doing, and based on that he’ll pull three bottles of wine off the shelf, tell me all about them, where they came from, what they’re like, an anecdote about the vineyard and explain how each would be suitable, yet different for whatever it is I’m planning on doing.
My last trip in was prior to a picnic and Pops concert. I walked out with a fantastic Rose (I’m actually not a big fan of Rose, but this one was good) and a solid Zin from a vineyard I’d never heard of. Both were fantastic.
Keep in mind that upscale means quality at a price. I’d guess that the average bottle of wine is in the $ 25-​$ 35 range — you won’t find any $ 10 bargain wines here. But they’re definitely worth the price you pay.
You’re also paying for the quality of the customer service. These aren’t college kids hired to work a register. They are all wine experts and are intimately familiar with all the bottles in the store. The last clerk I talked to told me about how he spends his summers working under a top winemaker at a vineyard in California.
Brix also has a small, but very high quality selection of liquor. Don’t expect to find Bud Light or Absolute on the shelves. These are all low production artisan liquors. If you’re ever looking for a ‘special’ bottle as a gift, or you just appreciate fine liquor, this is the place to go.
They can also find hard-​to-​find bottles. I asked about a little known Cognac style Brandy made in Mendocino, and I got a call from the clerk 2 days later — he said he could have the bottle for me by Friday.
Recommendations:
Hangar One Frasier River Raspberry Infused Vodka — it’s SOOO good (they keep it under the counter, so you may have to ask).
Any of the Pinot Noirs they keep in stock. Shopping for Pinots is so hit-​or-​miss (usually more misses around Boston), but every one I’ve gotten from Brix has been excellent.
Hang out and chat with the clerks for a while — it’s amazing what you can learn.

Someone’s cooking you dinner tonight. You’re responsible for the wine. The meal involves steak, and your date hates Merlot… You are contimplating what to get, but you don’t really know much about wine… much less AFFORDABLE wine…
What is a boy to do?
Pop into Brix, obviously. The wicked hot guy behind the counter was extremely helpful, and helped me locate some strange French wine that was under $ 20.
Service get’s 5 stars. Location gets 3 stars. Price gets 4 stars.
