Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co

My 14-​year old daughter, Arnetta, has been attending 826NYC since age six. Her first project was a music video in which they wrote the music, made their own costumes, created their own original concept, artwork and background, directed and edited their final video project. Once completed, it was shown at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in a fashion somewhat reminiscent of an adult, star-​studded red carpet event. It was a truly rewarding experience for the parents, educators (former director, Denise) and the parents.
It is one of the reasons at age 10, she was offered a publishing opportunity with Scholastic. 826NYC has been an integral part of our homeschooling family. I am quite certain that any family participating feels quite the same. The Brooklyn SuperHero Supply Co. is a means by which the 826NYC Organization funds its many projects, which never costs the participants a dime, but is priceless, nonetheless. It is a pleasure to patronize 826NYC. It all goes to a worthy cause – creating future literacy warriors.
Each of their locations (826National) in: California (826Valencia [est. 2002], 826LA [est. 2005]), Boston (826Boston [est. 2007]), Washington, DC (826DC [est. 2010]), Chicago (826Chi [est. 2005]), Michigan (826Michigan [est. 2005]) and New York City (826NYC [est. 2004] all use different fun marketing methodologies by which to fund their literacy programs.
They will come directly to a school, library or organization that expresses a need for their brand of educational justice against illiteracy!!! Yes, yes, she does have a photo of herself as a cape crusader against the injustice of illiteracy. When ever, where ever needed, she can pull out her cape at a moment’s notice!!!

This store was so much fun. Its awesome to feel like a superhero and knowing that the proceeds go to a great cause makes it that much better!

I really feel as though most of this should go without saying, but judging by that stupid look on your face… anyway, here’s a quick list of dos/don’ts:
Don’t:
1. Open the evil blob containment capsule. C’mon guys, use your brain.
2. Wear the X-​Ray sunglasses around your parents. Some things you can’t unsee.
3. Test the anti-​gravity gel without adult supervision.
4. Shove your friend in the De-​Villainizer, unless he’s ready to change.
5. Purchase truth serum, slip it in your wife’s drink, and then berate her when she finally admits that she ate the last slice that one time.
Do:
1. Have an imagination. Invisibility cloaks are incompatible with your skepticism/​adulthood.
2. Spend some money, because this place is awesome and you’re supporting a great cause.
3. Sign up to volunteer with 826 Valencia so you can teach kids how to write.
4. Get a power enhancement ring. Everyone needs some power enhancement now and again.
5. Question the cape quality. It says 100% authentic hero grade right there on the box. They wouldn’t just lie about that.

While the store is small, it is unique stop. Be sure to check your villain rating.

Fun store filled with all the superhero gagets you can imagine. Proceedes go to a good cause, so it is worth stopping in!

Made a special trip with the 11 year old. Closed for the holidays. Thanks for nothing jackbags. Who closes during the holidays? Especially a place like this.

May the superhero gods (not just talking about Thor here) bless this place with all their radioactive, indestructible, avenging their uncles/​parents/​dead cat, power of flight strength and might.
Seriously, though, there’s amazing stuff here, invisible stuff, cape stuff, mind control stuff. Plus, they do good things for kids — after school tutoring, class field trips, summer workshops for kids. Why wouldn’t you go here?

If you’re a superhero just starting out and need all the superhero basics like capes, tights and masks; or if you’re an established hero who just wants to spruce up their secret hideout, look no farther than the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. From invisibility detection kits to invisible paint to make stuff invisible so the kit can detect it, this place has it all.
Recommended to all superheroes be they Marvel, DC or independent. Please note that all customers must swear an oath not to use these items for evil. So you super villains are out of luck! And who doesn’t need a Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co t-​shirt in their wardrobe?

The crew there gave us a grand tour and my kids want to go back every year! What a wonderful store!!!

I have started «collecting» 826 storefronts. Been to three so far (Time Travel Mart in LA, Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute, and this) and the Superhero Supply Co is wonderful! Lots of things to help you in your heroic endeavours. It’s a great shop to browse around.
I ended up buying a bottle of mind control as I’m running a bit low. Placed it in the vault, read the oath out loud, my superhero identity was vetted (can’t have mind control falling into the wrong hands! … but do you have the latest intel? I might be tricking you. MOHAHAHAHAHA) and I paid through the vault (they accept plastic currency, it works very well).
When I first entered the store a workshop was about to start so I did get a glimpse of the secret door.
It’s well worth a visit if you need to restock your hero supplies, think you can fool them into thinking you’re not a villain or you’re simply a mundane everyday human who likes quirky things.
(826 is a great initiative and I like to support it whenever I can.)

This is the greatest store that exists in the history of stores — ever.
I walked past this store a few times, and one time my curiosity got the better of me, and I went in.
I have no words. It is simply magnificent. When you hear the name, it is exactly what you think it would be, and more. SO MUCH MORE.
They sell fun products, the staff are very involved and friendly and the proceeds go to support local youth programs. That is something I can behind, many times over.
I’ve bought a couple of items as gifts and they’re always well received. «Fun products» may be too vague, but trust me, if you can go to this store, GO TO THIS STORE

I’m not sure about this shop. The idea is great and you can wear a cape while shopping … be a super shopper so to speak Also the staff is great and gets everyone involved when shopping. But the things they sell is labeled in a way that I have no idea what is meant to be in the packaging. Everything comes in grey tins, or grey carton or grey plastic, with some seemingly cool name. But are Invisibility Goggles just normal chemistry goggles or swimwear or double-​glassed? I don’t know and I don’t want to open one of the grey packages. Not sure about this concept. Not sure at all.

We did the HowAboutWe scavenger hunt date here and, no spoilers, but it was fun and quirky and worth a walk through the cold to spend an hour or so in an indoor theme park/​playground for adults and kids alike with an admirable social purpose literally hidden behind a trap door. It’s a really great place to visit just to see and hang out, but it also has funky and unique gift options for kids, teens, and light-​hearted adults.

This place is perfect in every way.
The products they sell are fun and creative.
The staff if friendly and funny.
The money goes to a great cause.
Every time I need a can of strength this is the first place I go.

Very unique and interesting place. If you need a unique creative writing class or tutor/​learning center for your kids this place looks like they can handle it all. Very interesting website and products too!

Quirky store in Brooklyn that has a ton of cool costumes and superhero themed items. Check it out if you’re in the neighborhood, I’ve personally not seen anything like it before.

Dear Mr. Dave Eggers,
I really enjoyed reading your almost-​memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (except for maybe the interview section…), I always get a kick out of the essays and short stories featured each year in the BANR series, and the things that get published through McSweeney’s are always swell. Most importantly, your efforts in creating and maintaining the 826 non-​profit organization dedicated to helping students develop writing skills are admirable. Little did I know that the 826NYC tutoring center is hidden behind this superhero supply company. Bravo, sir. Bravo.
I really wanted to try on one of the capes, but there was already a boy who looked far more superhero-​like trying on a cape in the cape-​testing wind tunnel. We instead decided to look through the racks holding cans and canisters of various lab supplies such as Kryptonite, Chaos, Immortality, Omnipotence, and Shape-​Shifting. We also went to the section of disguises, and the shelf of vacuum suction cups, x-​ray glasses, and particle guns. I promise I’m pure and innocent, so there was no need for me to step into the red Devillainizer cage. There was also a great selection of McSweeney’s publications and items written by 826NYC students.
We also peeked through the view portal into the actual tutoring center. No kids were in that day, but I was curious as to how the two tutors got into the classroom. AHa! One of the crime fighting staff members showed us that one of the bookcases was actually a revolving door that led students and tutors safely (and secretly) into the back classroom. So clever. It was much better than my theory that they had to jump over a chained side door…
I’m still new to the superhero thing — I only decided to become a crime fighter a few weeks ago — but hope to sharpen my powers by shopping at this store and supporting 826NYC in doing so.

Only a villain could dislike the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.
OK, full disclosure: my husband and I are longtime customers of the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company in Seattle (a great stop for all your intergalactic needs.) After our last trip for supplies in Greenwood, we did some laundry at a local laundromat, but sadly, our space superhero uniforms shrank in the wash. Thankfully, Brooklyn was a short hop away once we refueled.
We were happy to see a functioning Devillainizer, and thrilled that we could try on capes and assess the proper airflow. The store was well stocked, and had pretty much everything you could imagine a superhero could need. Truly, these folks associated with 826 National know what they’re doing. Earth is becoming the #1 shopping stop for the intergalactic superhero.

Finally! A place where people can go and become superheros. or at least try stuff on and play around like they’re a superhero. In our short visit we determined which of us was a *villain*, found some very clever disguises, tried on a cape and tried to fly. It was a awesome time.
Oh and this place is actually a learning center for the kids! Disguised as a store. So clever!
The staffer/​volunteer in front told us there are actually several of these shops set up across the country. ie: Pirate Supply Store in San Fran and the Bigfoot Research Institute in Boston.

Why oh why I have waited all these years to post a review for this place — I don’t know.
My awesome little friend Max loved his evil blob containment device, and he still hasn’t made it to the store yet.
Brought a friend who was visiting from Los Angeles here the other Day and he was such a sport he tested out the cape on top of the cape tester machine. Given that he’s a creative and works with tons of kids I figured the experience would be priceless. End result: it was. He ate it up. Can’t wait to hear how much he loves the Time Travel Mart — in Los Angeles, and the Pirate Supply Store in San Francisco.

Date Rating: 10 (This is the BEST place to take a person with a beating heart. Just take a peek into the tutoring room in the back with all of the happy kids and volunteers. If your date doesn’t think you’re cool because you know about this place — dump them immediately).
Pick up Scale: N/​A (Bring your own friends the people here are fun to talk to but not a place for mingling).
Strong Suggestion: Take the train, walk a few blocks, enjoy the restaurants nearby. GREAT afternoon activity, lots of fun things to see and do nearby.
