I had a Marshall combo. It wasn’t one of their best but sounded great. The problem was that it was totally unreliable. After a disappointing gig in which the amp failed yet again I decided to sell it. I brought it to Steve with the sole intention of repairing and selling it. I wanted to at least sell it in working condition. Well after Steve fixed it he said the previous repairs were not well done. Consequently those issues had more to do with the repairs than the amp itself. He told me to give it one more chance. He said that he had actually improved upon the sound of the amp. I reluctantly agreed. It’s been three years and many gigs laters. No issues. You want the best in the business, go with Steve. No question about it. Oh, he’s also a straight up honest guy.

Been going to Steve for over 20 years. Steve is certainly helpful, I’ve seen him flex rules and hours to help a gigging musician make their show. He is pretty quick on turn-​around, often in just a day or two depending on parts etc. And his prices are the most reasonable I’ve found, it’s on the level for the working musician who is not rich! I like how he gives options (sometimes letting me sit and play to choose which tubes I want, or which resistor value makes the amp sound its best.
I’ve noticed he works on all kinds of things; not just vintage special amps; he’ll fix solid state, power amps, etc. without being snobby like some places. This is the ideal shop if you want repair, but especially if you want to chase tone — he can show you mods to make you amp sound better than it ever has. He taught me a walked me step by step to make a dog amplifier into a real rocker, and not very expensively!
I heard his own line of custom amps — amazing. I bought one of the first ones, a Bellaire.
The location is not a normal office-​front store, but is crowded with amps all down the walls. And right next door to Pearlman microphones — one of the best mic designers in the industry.

This guys in a amp guru. He recommended me an amp upgrade to, and I did. The amp is great. He said I would love the VHT Special 6 tube head, and I do. I didn’t have money for the matching cab so he took out the preamp on my 1×12 Carvin combo and added a speaker jack to it, and made me a cab! Not the most prestigious set up, but sounds like a thousand bucks! The guitar set up was great too!

this guy is great and i will always take my gear to him. Steve. He is great guy to talk music and gear with, I spent a good 20 minutes talking gear and music every time i visited the Rock Doc.

It was a few years ago, but Steve put a new reverb in my Carr Rambler in one day. It was a Saturday. I brought it in about 10 AM and he called me that afternoon to tell me that it was done. His price was very fair. I ended up tipping him for the fast work. He showed some of his originals to me as well. Top notch stuff. Beautiful too.

I called the shop on Monday expecting to leave a message, as the shop is closed Mondays, and Steve answered. He said I could bring the amp by and he’d do a quick diagnosis. When I got there, he took a look, told me the right speaker was out, and said he could have it back to me Thursday. I got a call from him Thursday saying that the amp was ready to pick up, so I went in. When I got there, the right speaker had been fixed. He also showed me that I could now utilize the stereo chorus effect built into the amp. I happened to mention that the reverb didn’t work, he took another quick look, and fixed the problem in 5 minutes at no extra charge.
Steve is a good guy who will take the time to explain anything you have questions about, and will charge you a fair price.

I play out in Los Angeles two-​four times a week. I only use boutique tube amps like Tone-​King and Holland. I also have a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I beat on these amps. Drop them, shock them, bang them, hurt them. They are always heading to the shop due to my abuse.
