History

Established in 2003.

Masacote Entertainment is a critically acclaimed dance school and company, directed by internationally-​renowned dance and music professionals. Originally founded in Okinawa, Japan, the company is now based in Boston, MA, USA and has since gone on to perform in 30+ countries across 5 continents and countless cities in between. Appearances include Australia, Japan, Korea, England, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Cuba, Canada, and throughout the US. The Masacote approach makes instruction, performances, concerts, global travel, cross-​cultural event planning & more accessible to clients around the world.

Ana and Joel M.

Business Owner

Ana & Joel Masacote teamed up to startup Masacote Entertainment in 2003. This husband and wife team is one of the most sought after in salsa/​mambo. Respected for their artistry and musicality, they have taken the interpretation of Salsa Dance to new heights.

Ana and Joel Masacote have taught in 25+ countries, throughout the US and Canada. They are booked as far as a year in advance and almost every weekend in between to teach and perform around the world. They often embark on 2 – 5 week European, Asian and US tours. You can follow their extensive tour and travel schedule by visiting their official calendar.

When not traveling to some exotic country, you can find Ana and Joel in Boston, MA teaching advanced master classes and their professional dance troupe of instructors in The Masacote Dance School and Masacote Dance Company. Under their guidance, the Masacote Dance School has become the leading Salsa school in the Boston area.

After going out to several latin dance clubs I decided to try this although I’ve never been much of a dancer. I really enjoyed the Intro to Level 1 Salsa class at Masacote. Maylena Chaviano did an outstanding job as an instructor. She was very patient while explaining the basics of Salsa dancing to her entry level students and even helped us practice at Ryles jazz club on Sunday outside of class. All of the instructors at Masacote are very knowledgeable and dedicated to teaching dance!
I will definitely be a salsa addict from now on and I would not hesitate to recommend this class to my friends.

I never really considered myself much of a dancer, especially when it comes to salsa. It all seemed so complex and for years I was content with simply grooving in my seat or tapping my foot to the music. Having recently completed the beginner level salsa class at Masacote I’m happy to say that I no longer shy away from invitations to dance and I have a burgeoning desire to fully immerse myself in Boston’s salsa scene. This newfound passion is a direct result of the personable yet precise instruction offered at Masacote.
During my session, Level 1 and Level 2 classes were held in the same room which did make things a bit cramped and chaotic at times but it was announced that these classes would be held in separate spaces as of May. Kudos to the school for recognizing the issue and being responsive to the students’ needs.

Boston is lucky to have the Masacote Dance Company in its midst. Masacote are an exciting and inspiring dance troupe, who create salsa every time they perform.
I first came across the company in Ryles (for those who want to see the crème de la crème of New England’s salseros, head to Ryles on a Sunday night) two years ago and was immediately interested in learning to do what they do.
Ana is not only the co-​founder of the company, but she is also undoubtedly their best dancer (which, seeing as they’re all pretty damn good, is really saying something), and a fantastic teacher. Her classes (Ladies’ Styling and Level 4 Salsa on Tuesdays and Thursdays) are well worth the price ($ 15): there is nothing worth knowing about salsa that Ana does not know. Her understanding of salsa and how it maps onto the body is astute, on point and massively helpful. The only problem with her classes is her popularity — everyone wants a piece of Ana, and there is often not enough time for her to give everyone the same amount of attention. (That being said, she does offer semi-​private and private lessons, which I am currently saving up for!)
I haven’t taken classes with the other instructors, but I imagine the classes taught by Joel (Ana’s husband, and the other company director) would be just as phenomenal as Ana’s.
Don’t be scared of this dance form — watch the way Ana moves, attend a Masacote performance and take their salsa classes.

I have had the pleasure of joining Ana and Joel, and many others, at the Masacote Retreat last summer. It was an experience like no others. Ana and Joel are some of the most dedicated instructors I’ve met and their teaching is technical as well as inspiring. Anyone wanting to perfect their dancing or get to the next level will not be dissapointed when working with this pair. I’m certainly repeating the experience again this year.
The Masacote Company pieces show Ana and Joel’s creativity and ingenuity, they are truly talented! I’m always amazed at how original and NEW their work is. On top of all that Ana and Joel are amazing human-​beings, so genuine, down-​to-​earth and approachable. It’s refreshing!
