History

Established in 2015.

Samurai Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an Renzo Gracie affiliate and was founded with the purpose of teaching the art to adults and children in a clean, safe and family-​friendly environment.

The Owner, Richard Jackson, spent over 10 years training with and learning from Master Renzo Gracie and Professor John Danaher at Master Renzo’s NYC Academy.

Business Owner

Rich trained for over 10 years at Master Renzo Gracie’s NYC academy. He was awarded his black belt by Professor Alan «Gumby» Marques, a third degree black belt under the legendary Master Ralph Gracie.

Rich started training Jiu Jitsu in 1996 under Professor Steve Maxwell, who received his black belt from Master Relson Gracie. Rich then relocated to Miami, Florida to attend graduate school. There, he received his blue belt from Professor Pedro Valente, Jr., one of the few individuals outside of the Gracie family to receive his Black Belt directly from the late Grand Master Helio Gracie.

In 1998, Richard moved to New York City to attend Columbia Law School. For over 10 years, he trained at Master Renzo Gracie’s Academy, where he received his purple and brown belt promotions from Master Renzo Gracie and his Head Instructor, Professor John Danaher.

In 2011, Rich relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and three daughters.

I’ve known rich for 3 years (maybe 4?). He has always been an excellent instructor who is methodical and thorough in his instruction, and it shows in his technique as well. Before he opened Samurai I greatly enjoy his classes where he taught at the Stanford grappling club. He was one of my first instructors and I greatly appreciated his focus on fundamental techniques, and his openness to questions.

Samuria is an amazing school! This is my first committed, and serious foray into any martial art, and I’ve had a blast so far. I’ve taken martial arts in the past and wrestled in middle school, so I’m familiar with schools, and also have some friends who are martial arts instructors. This school is definitely a stand out to to me.
The instructors are very professional, but also very down to earth, casual, and friendly. This is a school that truly values people’s experiences there, and wants everyone to grow and learn at a healthy and reasonable pace. In no way does that mean they aren’t serious! The instructors are talented and experienced martial artists and Rich is a welcoming and fun instructor who has a lot of first hand experience to share.
The facilities are very clean (this is really important when it comes to a Dojo) and the mat is cleaned, wiped, and sanitized twice a day. They have great showering facilities, which are neat, and easy to use. Students can purchase Gi’s from the school, or get a loner until they purchase their own.
I would highly recommend this school!

We started bringing our 7 year old here. We are so happy with the training he is receiving. Rich is amazing with our son. He is so positive, encouraging, and thorough. The hours are convenient and so is the location. The price is extremely affordable and worth every cent. I’m so glad we found this place!

Innovative instruction for all grappling positions including wrestling & judo based takedowns, something you don’t find often at BJJ schools these days. The head instructor is very welcoming and down to earth. Training partner safety is ingrained in the culture here.
Last but not least this is the cleanest BJJ gym I’ve ever seen. Rich works long hours to ensure the place is spotless. Multiple showers are available as well.
Love this place, a home away from home.

We began taking our two young daughters (3 and 5) to Rich’s class on Saturday mornings and they loved it. He introduced them to some jiu jitsu through games and was patient as they got the hang of some of the exercises. The facilities are immaculate and my kids left feeling happily exhausted. We highly recommend SBJJ — especially for young children!

Our daughters waited a long time to begin their BJJ training. As parents to 8 and 10 year old girls we wanted to make sure we found the right school for them. We could not be more pleased with both Richard Jackson, and his school. Richard is incredibly friendly, super experienced, patient, and a great instructor. The girls always come out from their training excited to demonstrate what they learned, and excited to return to learn more. I highly recommend SBJJ.

What a great experience at Samurai BJJ! I have been lucky enough to train at other good schools, and found Rich’s strong technical knowledge and versatile teaching style to be right on point. Rich and the other instructors are attentive to each of the student’s needs. They are proficient in teaching experienced practitioners, first timers, and kid’s alike. Rich and his team are great motivators to do your best and make training enjoyable. The new facility is super clean, spacious and functional. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking at quality academies anywhere in the South Bay.

Great facility and top quality instruction. Mr. Jackson is a very patient and student-​friendly instructor. He is also a stickler (positively) on basics, which is greatly appreciated. Mr Jackson also teaches standing and ground self defense techniques as well, not just the grappling portion of BJJ. He teaches a very well rounded program, and insists on maintaining a very friendly, and safe training environment for any age or experience level. Great group of people to learn from and train with!
