As to the electronics, the prices are high, especially for small things like old cameras or batteries. If you look around you can find places where it is free to turn in old stuff. In fact there is a place in Hayward that actually pays for old computers, $ 5 per, or so. It is really a matter of convenience when they show up at a local school. Of course they make money doing it; it is a business.

Saw a sign offering e-waste collection and document shredding today on Carmel Rancho Road. Since I had a couple items at home, i finished my business and returned with an old DVD player and microwave oven. There was no information about making a donation posted but when I pulled up to the spot to get rid of the items, I was told there would be a $ 20 donation fee. I asked why. I was told it goes to the Food Bank for Monterey City. I asked for a receipt and was given one. My receipt says«up to 50% may be tax deductible’. I feel this is a scam since 50% is not going to the organization represented. Also, I cannot find any listing for a Food Bank of Monterey City. Avoid this operation if you see them in your neighborhood. It is probably a rip off.

For the last week there was a sign posted in our neighborhood for electronic recycling/fundraiser for second harvest food bank. I assumed that you could donate what you wanted. However, as it turned out, they tell you what you need to pay. So for me it was $ 20. After I drove away, I thought it was a bit much for one small bag of electronics and decided to call the number on the sign to see how much would actually be donated to Second Harvest. I asked the man on the phone(assuming he’s the CEO) about the charges and at first he said they shouldn’t be asking for specified amounts, but then immediately after I told him what I dropped off said there is a $ 5 recycling charge per item for things like phones etc. but that TVs are free. When I asked him how much of the«donations» were actually going to Second Harvest he said«1⁄3.» I was still right around the corner, so I went back and talked to the lady who took my money to see if her story would be consistent with the man on the phone. When I asked her how much of the money is going to charity, she said that contract is between C&T’s CEO and Second Harvest Food Bank. Really??? You’re standing there telling people how much money to give you for a fundraiser but you don’t how much is actually going to charity??? And then she had the nerve to be annoyed, as if I was out of line for asking questions! So… I had paid $ 20 to recycle two phones, one toaster, and one blender. And less than $ 6.67 is being donated(if that’s even the case). That sounds like a pretty profitable business to me and not a fundraiser. Also, I don’t like how they took down my name and my address. That really bothers me a lot. Would I have given them $ 20 had I known everything I know now? NO. Please put up some signs with info next time. Failing to do so makes you look REALLY suspicious. Two thumbs down for someone who makes a profit in this manner.
