Carver Charles Elementary School

Aight keep in mind my review is from my experiences at Carver Elementary School during the 80’s to early 90’s as a student there. First off, back then it didn’t have any form of organized sports program, while other schools in the district had (Leal had a track team). Secondly, if you are planning to raise and innocent child… well, lets just say Carver Elementary is located in the neighborhood formerly known as the 190’s in Artesia. It once was a very active gang infested neighborhood. The City of Artesia has been working on cleaning that blighted neighborhood up for the last two decades, though I think they’ve finally made progress, even changed the street signs to have actual street names attempting to ditch the stigma of the «190’s» label. Used to be 191^st through 195^th street, with only Bingham, and Hibbing streets named on the ends of the neighborhood. The gang activity affected the school environment because we’d have graffiti on the walls, on the basketball court backboards, etched graffiti on the drinking fountains, outdoor tables, doors, walls across the street, walls lining the school… everywhere, that and if you waited around long enough after hours you’d have gang members cross the street, jump the fence, and just kick it on school grounds because police were unable to see into the school from the street view. Tell your kids not to walk home from here too, might get jacked by the local kids. Atleast that’s how it used to be. Should have cleaned up a bit during the modern era. Was most bummed back then from the lack of a sports program. Behold ABC District’s most neglected Elementary School. Though I do have a lot of fond memories of being there. But that was due to the people, my review is strictly about the facility, the staff at the time did the best they could with what they had, and they were great.
